Description Well, here it is finally. It's long and big, so be prepared. I hope you guys have a good time with it and get some awesome stuff from it!

Good luck with any Oblivions you take a crack at, and if I missed anything or you have other questions, feel free to ask. By the way, it should say Emiline down at the bottom there. I've no idea why the last line didn't show up. And why I didn't notice it until now. Oh well.

The work waits! Get to it!

Im not sure if the resin I have will eat foam or not, and i cant get any other type. Do you know what i can coat the foam with before adding resin to protect it?

Unfortunately there's not a lot to be done on that front. The best you might could do is get yourself some gesso and coat the foam really thoroughly and with several layers before you give it a go with the resin. And test a small piece beforehand.

As a general rule, if the resin is clear, you're probably okay. If the resin is amber, keep it the hell away from foam. If I could ask, is the resin the kind you have to add a few drops of hardener to it, or is it a kind where you mix equal parts of A and B?

its clear resin, and i only add a few drops. Ive just tested it, and it does eat away the foam. Right now im trying to coat the foam with thick layers of acrylic paint. I painted a test piece and sprayed it with spray paint and primer, it worked ok. Soon i shall try with the resin. I really hope its works :/

Spray paint will eat foam too, so watch out! >.<

Good luck with it!

questions: if you don't use the resin coating, how do you do the gloss spraypaint without it eating everything? i've tried covering it with acrylic paint first, but it still ate through
also, do you have any advice for how to print out the templates? i'm having a fairly hard time getting sizing right for the handle, so the guards of my oblivion turned out much smaller/thinner and closer to the grip than with yours

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedShotRonin In reply to kamenkewl [2011-08-22 03:13:46 +0000 UTC]

I'd tried coating it with several layers of gesso if you are really determined about using spray paint. You can just use a brush on acrylic clear coat to make things shiny, though.

I'm not sure what program/system/printers you have going on, so if you can't figure out how to print a big version of the keyblade, perhaps a graph scale system might work better for you? Take the picture you have and overlay evenly spaced boxes on to it. Then take a few pieces of poster board or cardboard and draw squares on to it exactly 5 or 10 times larger. You can then refer to the smaller graphed picture for spacing to make sure they are the same when you draw it out on the larger scale.

kamenkewl In reply to RedShotRonin [2011-09-11 04:41:23 +0000 UTC]

solved the first problem by finding some special spray paint made to be used on foam like this, haha
second issue, still having trouble with. working with a basic HP printer, but it's trying to scale it without going over the edge of the page, or having it cut off because i have to use the stupid printer's program and pre-set sizing options :/

RedShotRonin In reply to kamenkewl [2011-09-12 00:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Looks like you might have to go the graphing route then. If you have a friend who's good with math, I'd bring them in

Omg this tutorial is AWESOME! I want to make an oblivion but i didn't want to use wood cuz i have no power tools other than a screwdriver xD I want to make mine strong cuz I'm probably gonna be hitting people at fanime with it but I don't want to use the resin; too messy. Is there any other thing i could coat it in thats not very expensive and easy to get, like at Home Depot or something like that? And if not, should I use the posterboard on the 1 inch sides?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedShotRonin In reply to SilentNinjaofDeath [2011-01-31 00:02:01 +0000 UTC]

You could try coating it with Bondo. It usually sits right beside the resin stuff in Home Depot. It's usually used for doing body work on cars. Just going to make it heavier (so I might be worried about internal breakage. Some supports inside and under the Bondo could fix this) and take a lot, a -lot- of sanding. You could also try several layers of poster board on either side of the keyblade, maybe with a combo of lacquer or Modge Podge.

But just to warn, I've never actually done either of those options, so I don't know how they would turn out. Best of luck!

If someone orders it some time in the future, I might. Bit it's really not that different. Construction is even simpler, there's no 3-D pieces, really. Just a lot of detail painting.

also i bought 1/2" Elmer foam board

SewCrafty In reply to ??? [2010-11-20 01:43:06 +0000 UTC]

omg i wish i found this tutorial before i bought all my materials!!!! I bought a regular Elmer foam board and am sketching out my keyblade cuz i don't know how to scan/inlarge parts of the key blade (on my workforce printer/scanner) and put it together. Since the foam board i bought is only 30 inches long i have to go back to Micheal's and buy another one. plus i bought this other clay that i thought was cheaper (at least i think is cheaper) it's called DAS Modelling Clay and i bought some kylon spray paint primer in white and regular paint in black, i also bought gold, silver, and blue folkart paint for the details.....can i still use these materials and what other materials do i need? plus what do you mean cover foam part with acrylic paint because spray paint will eat it up?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedShotRonin In reply to SewCrafty [2010-11-20 18:58:33 +0000 UTC]

You can still use those materials, you'll just end up with a slightly different looking keyblade. My way isn't the only way to make one, after all.

I would be sure the foamboard part of your keyblade can support the weight of the clay before you get too far. If it won't, you might need to get some dowel rods or other supports for it. And some modeling clay isn't meant to dry out, make sure your's will.

The foam parts of the foamboard (meaning the exposed sides) will get eaten by the spray paint if you don't cover them up with either poster board or several layers of thick acrylic paint or gesso.

Hope this helps ^-^

Chriscatluvr [2010-09-28 21:54:32 +0000 UTC]

so the clay stuff goes on bothh sides? like you put one on know and one on later or what? it's a bit confusing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedShotRonin In reply to Chriscatluvr [2010-09-28 22:18:47 +0000 UTC]

The model magic goes on one side first, then it gets resined, then the model magic goes on the other side. With the back being flat the first time you resin coat it, it makes things easier. Does that help?

RedShotRonin In reply to ReiKainaric [2010-09-23 23:01:57 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much just the foam, the chains, the sand paper, and the power tools can be found at Home Depot. Everything else you'll probably have to look elsewhere for.
