Description
Well, here it is finally. It's long and big, so be prepared. I hope you guys have a good time with it and get some awesome stuff from it!Good luck with any Oblivions you take a crack at, and if I missed anything or you have other questions, feel free to ask. By the way, it should say Emiline down at the bottom there. I've no idea why the last line didn't show up. And why I didn't notice it until now. Oh well.
The work waits! Get to it!

Yep, they sure are. They are made with lines of carefully done hot glue.

Cool ! I may try that ^ _ ^
And do you have any other ideas what to do the minor 3D details in ? Mainly the handle part that is held and the very end - I have no clue what to make them of :/

I made them out of model magic and resin coated them. But Paperclay is a good substitute. You can find in in the clay sections at places like Hobby Lobby and Michaels.

Great tutorial. I think I'll look into that resin. I was an idiot and tried some from walmart for the first time...omnomnom foam.
Theres another on that site that says its good for foam...which one do you use in particular? *I saw your link in another post*
And just curious, you say it's pretty durable, any idea at what point you think it'd break? I'm asking because I'm thinking of making one and all the saws I could use are at my moms house ..so no wood.

Any resin that has the words 'bar top resin' somewhere in there should do just fine. It's resin that's used to cover tables and bar tops in restaurants to give them a clear protective coat. I live in Atlanta, so I've used a place called 'The Engineer Guy' to get a lot of my supplies, since they're right near me. (They are over here if you'd like to take a look: [link] ) Their Smooth-On series is excellent, and has a lot of resin options. Another company, US Composite, also carried Kleer Koat, which I've used before. In the tutorial, at the time I used Crystal Sheen, can't remember where I got that one. >.<
As for the durability, they can take some light hits, are okay to travel with, but any real bashing and they will break. They're props. And not made of wood. >.> If you want to reinforce them, I now put thin strips of plastic around the edges of most of the keyblades before I resin coat them, and double coating is always an option. As is internal supports, which I do for some of the keyblades, including the Way to Dawn. That one gets snapped right where the 'eye' sits before much of anything is done and a thick dowel rod is shoved in there before it's put back together.
Hope that helps answer your questions!

Ah that definitly does, thank you very much.
I've used the threaded metal rods for supports in props before, same idea as the dowel.
And double coating would add a lot of strength.
THANKS.

just to make sure, you added the resin and it didn't affect the foam at all? didn't melt? I know insulation foam is uber sensitive and crazy sometimes. did you have any primer on before adding the resin, though?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
RedShotRonin In reply to Inspiral [2010-06-24 15:28:04 +0000 UTC]
No primer, but as I describe in the tutorial, I use a special kind of resin. It's not the amber kind, it's a clear kind used to cover bar tops and table tops. Amber resin will melt foam all to hell and back. And yes, first time around, I did make the mistake >.>

I wana ask can anyone tell me where you can find the chain? Preferably Plastic (I lack a boxcutter) and can be found in a local hardware store or somewhere like that not online.

Check Wally World (Walmart) or Home Depot or the sort. They should have some sort of plastic chain.

Yess but I would guess that it is either 1-wayyy too long and I'll have a ton left over, 2-too much money, don't ask how, or 3-too small in size to work for the chain in the middle. I'm starting to wonder if it is a good idea to make the chains from clay *ponders*

RedShotRonin In reply to On-Through-Ze-Heath [2010-01-30 00:32:21 +0000 UTC]
You can, if you use a harder bake in the oven kind. Just be sure to be careful with it. >.< You might try Sculply's light version. It can be found in craft stores and sometimes WalMart.

I mde it with Super Sculpty and burnt it on purpose so i only had to use a little bit of black paint since it came out in the same color. The only problem is that some of the chains opened up while baking but I made do. Then I paint/coated it with gloss and it looks fine to me as long as no one trys to smash it into a wall.

I'll probably put them up but I have to finish Axel's chakrams first XD. I'll probably have the Oblivion done before the oathkeeper since I already have the pattern done. I'll need a lot of clay. *ponders* if it isn't too much to ask, can you devwatch me. This is because, well first of all you'd see when I post it up and second, I devwatch a loooot of people and so that doesn't help me remember anymoe so chances are that otherwise I would have forgotten completely about you. You don't need to if you don't want to.

Thanks XD. Although i must say it probably don't be anytime soon since my mom complains if i work at a cosplay prop more the two hours a day... it's suprizing how fast two hour passes.
If you want, i can take pictures of the chain alone because besides the pattern and tracing it onto the foam, I have yet to get anything done.

Only thing I really use wood for is the Ultimate keyblade, and a few other special order props. I use the jigsaw to cut big foam sheets.

I get it over here: [link] And well, it's not the cheapest thing in the world, no. I buy lots of it because I use all of it for orders, but for one project it's sort of an investment. You can also buy it special order at places like Sherwin Williams Paint stores.

Wow, the tutorial is amazing. I had one question though;
I know that the resin reinforces the foam so it's less fragile, but what about making the base out of wood? o_O Or does that just not work as well? I'd hate for the keyblade to break if it's foam. I'm not sure how sturdy the stuff is. XD;
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RedShotRonin In reply to Max-Gundam [2009-07-15 03:07:02 +0000 UTC]
Thank you ^-^
Wood is just heavier and take more tools and a much longer amount of time of work with. You'd be amazed how heavy even a 5 pound prop feels after a few minutes to swing around.
The resin coated stuff holds up well enough for traveling and showing off and such. They can be dropped and knocked over and be just fine. But a wood one would be able to take a good bit more abuse. And be lots more expensive >.<

This may have been asked a few times but where can you get solid housing foam? My dad said he would help me and the only thing we're having issues with is the foam stuff.

Solid housing foam is available in the lumber section of home building stores, such as Home Depot and Lowes. It comes in big pink massive sheets, but a sheet of the 1/2 thickness should only cost $15ish. I suggest in the store stepping on its halfway point and cracking it in half for easier transport in cars. You'll be chopping it up anyways.
Good luck with it all!
