I am not drawing such scales when working with digital media. My digital style is always rather "cartoony" and "simplistic"! ^^"
But you can surely try this tutorial with digital media, too... it might even work.

How do you transition to the head? I'm having real trouble with my reptilian.

Are you asking me, how I'm drawing a "dino" or "Reptilian head"?
Well, usually I start with a circle - just like human heads. Then, I draw a small "boulder" at 12 o' clock (assuming, the circle would be a clock). From this part (it'd be the eyebrowe) I'm drawing 3 lines down: upper snout, snout front and jaws. It goes back to the circle, so that the drawing looks like a "hand vacuum cleaner"!
After the shape has been completed, I draw all the detail and connect important lines, to give it a real good "dino" appearance.
The textures are usually ridges and gaps... scars and smaller scales. Nothing very clean, but rough... like skin reptile is supposed to be.
Any more questsions, just write me. ^..^

Well, that's why I was looking for scale textures to begin with. I have the guy's head already, but I don't know how to give him semi-realistic scales on his head. The body I was going to worry about after I figured out his face.
How do I make the scales look rough on the face? How do I differentiate from body scales?

You differ betweent he scales by changing the strenght and size of the scales.
I can't really tell you HOW, 'cause you've gotta find that out for yourself.
But I can give you this advise:
When you have a body part, that has to be flexible and very movable, don't use hard, round scales there... but just small ridges and gaps. And I tell you, watch some pictures of "dinosaur skin", this is really helpful.

Haven't seen ya in a while (or maybe it's cuz I haven't really looked hard into my deviations, but anyway). I think I realized I never faved this tutorial. Still reading it. It's still helping me, every time. I hope I can do my scales as good as you one day.

Hehehee, danke schΓΆn (nebenbei, endlich mal DEUTSCH!!)!
Nun, das hat lange gedauert, den Stil mit EDDINGS zu entwickeln... aber sie leuchten einfach ZU SCHΓN, um sie nicht zu verwenden! Und ich bin ein "Farb-Narr"!!!

Gerne doch (endlich DEUTSCH? Why?)
Auf jeden Fall hast du einen sehr individuellen Stil entwickelt. Top! Ich bin nich so ein Farbnarr, aber ab und an mag ich die auch

Well consider this >> I was never planning on getting markers before now >< Now I have the urger to buy them though I should be saving for college and my novel.
Hmm... do you think water color could make just as good a foundation as markers?
π: 0 β©: 1
ReptileCynrik In reply to Virangelus [2005-07-21 08:11:22 +0000 UTC]
Water coloring depends mostly on the weight and structure of the paper and how many water you use. If ya paint with less water, it can be a quite "beaming" colorful artwork! And if ya use much water, you can make nice effects... but you need hard and strong paper then (which is less good to draw on). Well, I'd propose to search for "copic markers", kay? You will find similar stuff everywhere - in every good "office store"!
π: 0 β©: 1
Virangelus In reply to ReptileCynrik [2005-07-21 14:26:11 +0000 UTC]
yeah I can get a "starter set" of copic markers for 60 bucks >> QUestion is... will I really use them though.... We'll see how this drawing of a gryphon comes out (i'm doing feathers for once, instead of scales, byt I shall return to the scales, OH yes). Then I'll ponder if I'm really worthy of copic markers.

Hello, and thankies for the comment!
Well, you are absolutely right... I don't do this much work, when I have relativly small figures! This only fits to close-ups... but THEN, I am drawing every single scale! Har har!!!!
This is my kind... I love details!

Awesome work!!! Now I know your awesome secret to coloring!!! Your coloring always pwns my ass. Now, I can start up the competition!! XP Once I get those markers, or at least something close to them, the competition's gonna' heat up!!
And thanks for the dedication, Patrick, you rock!

Thankies, my friend! In fact, I liked your tutorial so much that I HAD TO start my own.
So far, we both did a good job for each other!!!
And if this is really useful to you, then I am most deloghted! And be assured... these "EDDINGS" are cheap markers. Not water based, I guess... but they are WATERPROOF! And light-resistant!! These 2 points have to be checked, before you buy markers, kay?
π: 0 β©: 1
Ragnarokdragon In reply to ReptileCynrik [2005-07-20 16:00:42 +0000 UTC]
Alright. You know, I tried researching those Eddings and found out they're only available in Germany.
Anyways, once I get some money (though I don't know how since I don't have a job yet), I'm gonna' search for some good markers. Or prismacolors. Whatever I find first....
π: 0 β©: 1
ReptileCynrik In reply to Ragnarokdragon [2005-07-21 08:12:23 +0000 UTC]
Prismacolors and copic markers are the best substitude!!!
In fact... they are way better then EDDINGS! I told ya, EDDINGS are cheap, hehehehehhe! But you will find some - and when you finally do, show me a pic of them!
