Description Agrias Oaks from Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite characters. The protector of the princess Ovelia, she is loyal, tough, and a great asset in battle if you take the time to beef her up.

I tried my hand at "Alphonse Mucha-izing" her, because of a set of requirements I'm trying to reach. Having recently joined a Livejournal Ivalice art community that stresses mingling classical art with the world and characters of Ivalice (FFT, Vagrant Story, FFXII), it gave me a jolt to the brain. Akihiko Yoshida's characters are my favorites and classicism fits them very well. Also, having bought a rare set of Digicube-published FFT cards (the closest thing to a FFT artbook), I decided to try out my new resolution.

Hope you like it!

Saw your image posted on giadrosich journal and had to come take a looks see. I love the stone wall in the background and the great work you've done on the armor. Glad to have been able to see this.

Thank you, Koolaidmaid. (I'm sorry it took so long for me to get back to you).

I'm still experimenting with textures and I love drawing armor, so I'm glad you like those elements.

Hey Ann, it's been a while!

The colors in this piece are fantastic, by the way. I love the way you drew the hair.

Great to see you again, XueLian! So, how goes life and DSWC?

Thanks. I enjoyed drawing it.

Absolutely astounding. You're right.... the style fits Ivalice very well, especially Agrias. (she's my fav from Tactics!) The stonewalls in the background are done well, and the folds in her clothing are great. Lovely job on her hair as well.

BTW, I just nabbed two Vagrant Story doujinshi off of EBay. (Yes, they're Ashley x Sydney, of course). I squealed and then I bought both of them - heh, impulse buy. I was just checking doujinshi out, decided to idly type in 'VS doujinshi' just for the hell of it and then, I found myself staring at two of them. The VS fangirl in me reared up its Dark-infested head and well...you know what I did.

XD

I didn't even know people still had VS doujinshi out there! This is soooo my lucky day. Ashley and Sydney? Double yes, please!

If I have time in between requests and personal projects, I'll see if I can scan some in and WinZip it for you. We'll need to do AIM exchange, then or something.

BTW, I'm doing a VS search on Japanese sites and found some VS doujinshi-style art:

[link]

(You have to go into Gallery and then Games) - Vagrant Story is above FFXII. The second picture of Monsieur Riot is hot.

(Go to the Fanart section. It's the first square.)

I would very much appreciate it; thank you! Drop me a Note if you ever have the time. Lol (I understand, we're all busy right now.)

Thanks for the links; I loved on the first website that first pic of Ley and Syd.... And, of course, the second one of Ley was.... ....very nice. /blush

XD You know the clothes they wear invite that kind of...err...suggestion? I saw another deviation on DA that played on the whole BDSM aspect in a funny way. Got me ROFL-ing through the roof.

The doujinshi came today, too. There's a lot of gag stuff in there - funny - and quite a bit of soft BL between Ashley and Sydney. (And what'd ya know - Ashley actually tops in one? Most of the time, I see him in the fandom as the bottom). Good art.

I don't know whether you've ever heard of or read the Kushiel's Legacy trilogy by Jacqueline Carey. If you haven't, Google it up. I got the most bizarre crossover fanfic idea in my head and it's with that trilogy and VS. In the trilogy, the people of this particular country worship a sacred angel named Naamah who's most well-known for her sexual prowess. The sacred prostitutes who rever her have the tattoos of their respective Houses (aka brothels) applied to their backs through patron gifts; once it's done, they're free. My idea is to make Sydney from Gentian House (a brothel known for its mystical gifts, and since Sydney is a seer of sorts...) and Ashley a Camaeline soldier (a bloodline of top-notch, seasoned warriors). I'm just trying to figure out if I want Ashley to be a patron, which would fit in with Ashley x Sydney in the weirdest way possible.

I played some VS last night, too. Nothing like whacking Crimson Blades around, solving block puzzles and missing jumps in the Great Cathedral, and hitting a 20-chain on a dummy. I'm still trying to get titles and break arts, too. I've been playing it since 2001, I think and still hasn't gotten old.

Wow.... I always imagine Ley as the Topping, well... After Syd initiates the seduction... Anyway...

Oooooh. I have not heard of this..... But this trilogy sounds excellent and absolutely perfect for a x-over. I say do it! Your ideas sound fantastic.

I jumped on the bandwagon late, in 2005, but I still play the hell out of it... it'll never get old; it's just that damn good.

Heh, in most fanfiction and fanart I see, Syd's the one playing pitcher. It's kinda weird but in a psychological way, I guess it works. After all, Sydney was the one manipulating Ashley around Lea Monde.

I will, in my own time.

Thanks, leonhart-less! Agrias is one of the best, isn't she? A fighting female knight with sword techs/skills - you don't get that everyday! Thanks again - the details were fun to do and my color pencils needed some "fun" time. Mucha's awesome with hair, so I'm happy it was a very suitable style for Agrias here.

I love the linework on this one, Ann. Crisp, confident, and bold in all the right places. The heavier line really helps to hold all the interior detail in place. And of course, the absense of line in the background serves to push it back even further!

Nice sense of weight on the sword and gotta love those hands! This looks like a little different direction for you. Keep up the fine work!

*still trying to get over the stun factor*

Thank you so much for commenting on my work, Bob! I totally didn't expect that - it's like meeting your idol and becoming flabbergasted. *head reels* And it's an awesome, in-depth comment, too.

I had this Mucha book open on my desk when I was working on it and it amazed me how well the guy's line control was. I simply tried to bring that quality out and judging by your comment, it worked. I didn't even think about the absence of line pushing the background back, but I knew it wouldn't look good to bold it as well.

Thanks about the sword and the hands. The sword was killer to color and the hands (still trying to improve on them in general). Yeah, this is a different direction for me. Considering that "classical" can be anything during those centuries, I'm in for a complete overhaul of style and technique shying away from anime. My next one is going to be an inked piece, so hopefully your artbook "Ink" will help me out.

Well, it's a wonderful piece! It looks like yo spent a lot of time and effort on it, especially with the detail on the armor. Mucha! What a grand draftsman! I probably have 10 or more books on his work alone. I never, ever, ever get tired of looking at his work.

You may already be familiar with the large paintings of his known as The Slav Epic. If not, it really puts his work into another dimension. For a peek, here's an article I wrote a few years back called Mucha Grande which contains a few of the paintings.

Keep up the fine work, Ann! I'm looking forward to the ink pieces.

Oh yes. The only book I have of Mucha covers his Slav Epic and those are grand. As for the ink piece, my nibs and ink don't like each other. Does all super-black India ink eventually turn sticky?

I hearby decree that all nibs and ink must dwell in harmony forthwith! Actually, try Higgens Black Magic. Non-sticky.

Wow- this artwork is really beautiful. The coloring and line work is soothing yet still bold and solid. I always was interested in FFT but I did get to watch my bro play it. I like that you featured a female warrior and might I add you did a great job. I'm sure the community at LJ will enjoy it!

I am quite impressed, this is not like your usual work quality, the line art is quite solid, the material are coming through, the sword looks nicely done. The proportion makes sense, though a bit exaggerated on her hands. Keep up the good work.

I seem to give it my all for the Ivalician fanart (FFT, Vagrant Story, FFXII). I've also been doing self-studies on the human skeleton and muscles, so I think that it helped greatly with my usual weaknesses (I'm going to keep up with that). It seems that the idea this LJ community started has given me fresh resolve.

XD I'm far from done experimenting. More FFT art to come, soon.

INTRODUCTION

Ivalice has a dramatic history of kings, saints, and rogues. It is a land rich with beauty, from the rippling dunes of the Sandsea to the crumbling ruins of Lea Monde.

Surely artists painted these things.

And just as surely, historians wrote about their lives, their secrets, their masterpieces and lesser triumphs. The Ivalice Atelier is a record of Arzalam J. Durai’s research.

It’s a fanart community. It’s a bit of a role-playing game, featuring original characters from the Ivalice universe. It’s more than a little meta.

Hopefully, it will be a ton of fun.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

The Ivalice Atelier is a community dedicated to Ivalice Alliance fanart inspired by art history. β€˜Inspired’ is a loose term – it could be something as simple as liking the way Caravaggio uses light, or as complex as a study of Rembrandt’s techniques using Ondore as a subject. It doesn’t have to be a direct interpretation!

Artists are encouraged to create Ivalician personas to accompany their work. Maybe your Pre-Raphaelite portrait of Ashe was painted by a Viera, or your Art Nouveau poster of Sydney is the product of a bohemian Hume. It would be great to see some β€œself-portraits” of these talents.

Writers are welcome to contribute β€œmonographs” or other β€œresearch” concerning these artists and their work as well as create their own Ivalician scholars. Durai could use an academic rival or two.

Lurkers are welcome to … well, lurk.
