Description The ink series of character illustrations for my Celtic warriors has begun.

#1 opens with the central main character, Cian mac Leslie, dressed in the Irish tunic (leine), a plaid cloak (brat) with an annular brooch, trousers (braccae), and boots. He's armed with a sword, a spear, a dirk in his belt, a smaller dagger (skean dubh) in his boot, and a buckler. Behind him are standing stones and as far as he could see, the flat rocks mingle with the wild grasses and blooms for miles ahead.

Thanks, subedei. I think I'll be doing more ink pieces as a leisurely hobby in the future. This character of mine is definitely coming back, methinks.

Reminds me of Askeladd from Vinland Saga: [link]

That makes me very happy, because Vinland Saga is a great manga. Askeladd is also badass to his Viking teeth. I need to read more of it. I only got started not too soon ago.

Woa, Rinoa, you are truly an inspiration; after skimming through your gallery a bit and reading your las few comments on this piece, I can see all the improvement and hard work made to reach this, wich I believe, is one of your culminating pieces. Right now IΒ΄m going through a process similar to yours, where I thought studies werenΒ΄t(gosh I feel kinda shamed :S) necessary, and wanted to jump straight into drawing ΓΌber awesome; now I realize my mistakes and thanks to you, I have reaffirmed my desire of becoming a true artist, and defeating my weaknesses. for this and for sharing your great work I Thank you ^^.

I understood you just fine, Morderishen.

I'm truly happy that you've gotten your feet on your own path towards improvement. It sometimes takes a while to get there. I started getting back into studies when the uber-awesome drawings in my head refused to come out uber-awesome. That was when I realized that those boring basics were really needed. I'm taking life drawing classes right now and I'm still learning a lot (I made and continue to make a lot of mistakes when drawing people). It'll just take a lot of dedication and hard work to get better, that's all.

Best of luck to you, too. Keep on going and let's leave some mountains behind us.

I love all the detail you put into this, and the inking is awesome.

Thanks. I still need to get back to this series (3 more to go!) but I'll wait until I get more studies under my belt.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I have allot of projects I would like to get back to at the moment ( Like my solitude comic ). But after yesterday I'm driven to get better so studies are what I focusing on.

Same here. I used to think studies were boring in high school - I fell into the anime trap - and now I think they're awesome. It took me at least four years to undo most of the bad habits I've picked up from trying to jump into anime first without my foundations, but ever since I've run headfirst into my Bridgman, I'm seeing improvement ten-fold. Now, I find knowing my studies and understanding and applying them to be the most challenging fun I've ever had.

I actually started this series to break my fear of backgrounds. I used to hate drawing backgrounds and did a cruddy job on them as a result. After I went into this set of drawings, I completely lost my fear and started seeing them with a different perspective. I also learned to work on the background first and character last so that I wouldn't skimp on the quality for the first. But yeah, if you look all the way back in my gallery, you can see where I started from. I have worse but they're in folders in my cabinets. XD

Gosh, yes, I've only been drawing people since I started college about three years ago and geez were they horrible. Looking back on high school instead of drawing piles of pics of dragons I should have been doing studies like I started doing in my first foundations courses I took in college. I Don't have any high school drawing posted though.

Hey this looks good. I very appreciate your pictures, the strokes are great. And nice use of references, I've been in libraries too just to look up how they dressed.

Thanks.

This is when research is fun - when you know you're going to be applying it to something you like.

wonderful job- seeing this is really great, this is the definitive ann inking style, and it's awesome! Love the strong single figure of Cian and the rugged terrain with the sweet border.

Hee. Thank you. XD

I think it's also the definitive Cian at this moment. (Of course, this isn't the end of my inking style, yet. I'm gonna see just how far I can push myself). The Celtic knotwork was interesting to crack down and learn - gridding necessary for noobs like me! XP And the rocks...my hand nearly fell off. Damn stippling!

hi dear hows the picture coming along? or was it manga

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RinoaDestiny In reply to deaddarkness [2008-08-14 18:54:14 +0000 UTC]

It was the manga. Do you need more character designs or should I wait for a written plot/script? I'll have to redraw Ryuujin, of course. His last attempt made him too beefy. XD

Can I have your e-mail? This way, it goes to you directly; although, with this Celtic project on me, I'll be postponing every thing else until I get them done. Kinda don't want to lose my style at the moment.

No, seriously. That looks very epic.

Thanks. I'm hoping the second one is just as good, then. Funny enough, the one who isn't a 'retty boy' is easier to draw.

Yeah, I did the knotwork by myself. It was quite something, following the geometric layout and directions in the book. Fortunately, once the ink was laid on, it looked good.

#2 Keir mac Ceallaich is next. I'm going to start on him tonight.
