Description This is a tutorial for lightening the color of a wig. It's only semi permanent, so if you wash your wig some of the color are going to wash out. But it looks great though!! xD And I haven't heard of anyone else that has been able to lighten the color of a wig, so this is revolutionary !! haha, just kidding! I hope you find it useful. does it have to be that brand of marker? or could i use a regular paint marker or something along those lines?

it definitely doesn't have to be that particular brand!! i've tried this before with Elmer's paint markers, which I think were mentioned below, and it worked just fine!

does the marker mess with the texture of the wig?

what kind of markers are they? Like water based or alcohol based and are they expensive? I kinda wanna buy loads of them to try lighten the whole wig but alas I don't have much money

I'll just copy and paste from a webpage about posca:

Contains Non Toxic Water Base Paint. Mark on metal, wood, glass, plastic, plaster, canvas and more. Excellent for signs exposed to the weather. Great for temporarily marking up glass windows.

Popular with surfboard painters.

Used extensively by Auto Dealers to mark windows with advertisements. Also used by auto body shop estimators to map out repairs on vehicles.

Markers are removable from non porous, sealed surfaces like glass, car bodies, chalkboards.

Opaque, water based acrylic paint is non toxic and acid free. Odorless, lightfast, Xylene free, lead free and waterproof when dry. Will bond permanently to wood, clay pots, poster board, plaster and other porous materials.

In Norway they are really expensive, sadly : / I don't know how the prices are in other countries though, sorry.

From what I understand, they are Paint Markers. Paint Markers can be found rather cheaply, like this one from Walmart [link] which was only a few dollars.

I live in Norway so it's hard for me to help people from the US to find where to buy posca markers. I buy mine from various hobby shops and Staples. Since you have staples in the US you could try there, but I'm not sure if they sell the same stuff there as here in Norway.

Twiganut In reply to ??? [2013-06-19 00:43:12 +0000 UTC]

have you tried mixing this with the rubbing alcohol method? it might make the dye more permanent? Im trying to take a "classic purple" wig and make it Fuchsia so I might need this method to help make it more pink-y purple rather than ick.

Rirukuo In reply to Twiganut [2013-06-22 12:09:18 +0000 UTC]

sorry for the late reply ><
Rubbing alcohol is illegal to buy here, so I have never tried it. It's also the reason I use posca to darken wigs instead of just going with the rubbing alcohol+ink method D:

Twiganut In reply to Rirukuo [2013-06-27 02:13:01 +0000 UTC]

no worries about the late reply we all go AWOL sometimes ^.^ and that's super harsh you cant even BUY rubbing alcohol it comes standard with most first aid-kits here. If I can track down your pens I'll test it for you and let you know what the result is

Omfg thanks so much for this tutorial. Gotta try it out!! Will the colour wash off completely, in case i need it for another cos? And if it's on a long wig, would the colours rub off onto the costume

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rirukuo In reply to CoelumStellatum [2013-06-22 12:07:23 +0000 UTC]

Hi, sorry for the late reply ><
The color does wash off completely...And it does rub off a little bit, but not a lot. I wore a long red wig which I painted with posca markers while wearing a white top once, and the top did get a little pink at the shoulders ><

First off, *slow clap,* I'm glad someone found a way to lighten wigs to be candid. I wasn't really sure if I was going to ask this, though there's no way, besides shipping it here, to get Posca to Canada. Do you think regular UNI markers would work or should I just ship them??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rirukuo In reply to Highb100dsonly [2013-04-23 14:09:28 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea if it will work. I live in Norway so I've never heard of UNI markers, sorry.
But it says that:
"POSCA Contains Non Toxic Water Base Paint. Mark on metal, wood, glass, plastic, plaster, canvas and more. Excellent for signs exposed to the weather."
and
"UNI markers are oil base paint in a handy marker. Great for marking sheet metal, auto parts, glass, pipes, wood, concrete, leather, stone, tile."

So Posca is water based paint, while UNI is oil based paint, so the texture will probably be different, and maybe UNI will give less coverage. But it says that they can be used on roughly the same surfaces, so it might work. I'm not sure, but if it's not to expensive you could try the UNI markers just to be sure^^

Thanks for this method! So, did you use a lighter pink, or just a white? I have a dirty blond wig I need to be around a silvery blond color.

I used a white marker. You might be able to turn it silvery by using a white, gray or silver posca marker.

Do you know if this would work to make a black wig, brown? What color marker do you think would work to turn black hair into brown?

Rirukuo In reply to FuchsiaWater [2013-04-16 16:48:20 +0000 UTC]

So sorry for the late reply! m(_ _)m
I think you can do it, but it wont seem as natural as if you buy a brown wig of course.
You could try just using a brown posca marker, I think it will work. The posca markers are really opaque, so it might work!
But if it doesn't work you could try with a white posca and a brown posca on top.

Hikonasasu In reply to FuchsiaWater [2013-03-01 10:34:13 +0000 UTC]

For that I think is better if you use a white marker first and after that a brown marker

After using the posca the wig fiber is a bit harder, feels like having a lot of hairspray on the wig. And you can use a brush without removing the color^^

I want to put a blonde streak through a brown wig, do you recommend the same method, or do you think a yellow marker would be better?
