Description This is the cover and back cover to my daughter's birthday party invitation. We are only inviting immediate and extended family so I feel bad that I'm only sending a few of these out in the mail.

I wanted to recapture the grungier Sesame Street from my childhood days. The Sesame Street books back in the 70's were illustrated with such a unique group of artists. I still have all of mine!

Now Elmo and Zoe rule all with their neon poppy colors and mass produced clip art illustrations...DAMN YOU ELMO...DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!!

I miss all the un-PC characters like Roosevelt Franklin, The Two-headed Monster, Frazzle, Herry Monster, Bruno the Construction Worker, Guy Smiley, Sherlock Hemlock, The sleazy street vendor guy, and that crazed piano player that used to smash his head on the keyboard.

Wow, I didn't realise they'd gotten rid of that many characters these days! most of my faves I totally agree with keeping the grungy side of the street. it makes for a nice juxtaposition and makes the characters more 'real' in a way. It's something I try to do with my comics too, dunno how successful I am with that yet.

Nice work as always!

Would sing "Happy Birthday", but it's hard to do so in a comment, plus I don't think the RIAA would be too pleased, either!

But seriously, A very happy birthday to your daughter, Robb and an awesome picture to boot!

No kidding! All different illsutrators used, and they got to make the show seem like less of a corporate brand and more approachable

I, too, think SS has suffered terribly in the last decade or so. But... what was "un-PC" about the characters you mention? Only the number painter and Lefty the shady salesman could raise objects I immediately understand.

The earliest SS may have gone too far in the other direction. They would show kids playing unsupervised at a construction site, or a man inviting an unknown little girl into his house for ice cream, or Cookie Monster eating Bert again and again....

RobbVision In reply to DeckardCanine [2008-10-25 05:22:01 +0000 UTC]

HA! Tehre is soem wild stuff o nthere compared to today. There are a few creepy older animations on there that sure would give nightmares, but I love that stuff!

snikkio In reply to DeckardCanine [2008-10-21 16:29:30 +0000 UTC]

They don't even let Cookie Monster sing "C is for Cookie" any more... he talks about healthy food, too...

Oh my...! I already forgot all those names. I only remembered the Cookie Monster's name.
But I still remember characters. Maybe not all, but most of them.

Good cover!
So your daughter is 1 year old?

I'm jealous. I want to be a mother...

RobbVision In reply to Vrolok87 [2008-10-26 02:51:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I remember a lot from the old show but some of the secondary ones slip my mind. A lot of those guys were cut from the show which is a bummer.

Yes, one year old! That year jsut flew by so fast. what a life-changer. It is so fun to watch her change and learn new things every day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vrolok87 In reply to RobbVision [2008-10-26 17:13:25 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine that. And I can imagine, how fast this year flew. Of course for you.
I remember when I was a very little. Then year was sooooooooooooooooo long time... almost endless. So I think it seems the same for your daughter.

I wish her happy Birthday! If I didn't miss the right time.
