Description
For future reference. I'm such a sucker for cutesy designs...I like the idea--completely contradictory demeanors and powers, yet the same aspiration to travel the world without ties to anyone or anything.
I really like Sonic with up-turned spikes, to me he looks livelier and even jittery that way lol. Heβs more than likely an adrenaline junky, after all.
And while Mighty's a peaceful, friendly guy, I made his appearance look somewhat threatening to get some juxtaposition going.

Yup, the legendary trio, Sonic 1, 2, 3&Knuckles. Also Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic 3D Blast.
Mighty is featured in Knuckles Chaotix.

the last Sonic pic on the right reminds me a lot of the ending scene from Sonic CD, the clip right after he throws the stone on Eggman!

Yeah, the Sonic on the far right was taken directly from a screenshot, and I used the proportions of that pose to create the rest of the turn-arounds. So most likely, that pose is from that scene! (I didn't pay attention to what scene it came from when I screen capped)

Awesome design! I love their personalities, too. It's a shame they only starred in one game together.

These are crazy cool!!! Love how solid those turns are and the clean artwork is tremendously exciting. This is soo much fun, its looking at stuff like this that reminds me how much of a blast Sonic the Hedgehog can be.
I think the little scene at the bottom is really great, I just wish the background was a bit more solid. Just a tad so its still done quick.

Ah, thank you! The way you spoke, something about it told me you're a professional artist--so visiting your page I found you're involved with Archie comics! Awesome How do you like it?
Thanks for the feedback! I really wanted these to be fun and whimsical, so I'm glad you got that from them. Also, I'm glad you think they look solid--took me forever to get them looking believable. And I agree about the background. I'm not very experienced with them, even more so when I made this, so I couldn't give it much thought, haha.

sweet, I was hoping to find some good ref of CD Sonic facing forward.
Sonic 'n Mighty are awesome, but something seems missing to me . . . .
where's Ray the Flying Squirrel, the 2nd playable character to Sonic (Player 1) and Mighty (Player 3) from SegaSonic Arcade? '3'

rontufox In reply to JamesTheReggie [2011-04-30 20:28:49 +0000 UTC]
Awesome, I hope these turn arounds prove helpful to you!
Yeah, I didn't include Ray. I considered it, but ultimately his character just didn't impress upon me that much as a child, so I'm not really interested in him
π: 0 β©: 1
JamesTheReggie In reply to rontufox [2011-05-01 08:33:06 +0000 UTC]
oh well, I always thought that the three go together like a PB'nJ sandwich. Mighty and Ray were like the bread, and Sonic, well, like the PB'nJ. xP
But oh well, it'd be nice if you tried it at least once, but I won't force it on ya.
Just one condition, keep up the good work with your Sonic stuff. ^_^

rontufox In reply to JamesTheReggie [2011-05-01 15:31:37 +0000 UTC]
Haha, unfortunately in my mind Ray's character concept just isn't strong ability-wise, personality-wise, or visually. Tails fills in such a role more successfully--how he flies is more dynamic, he's visually more interesting, and his basic personality matches (though I'm going off the Genesis-era games for all this). That's not to say I don't like Ray--I certainly do, and there's definitely potential to make him stand out as an individual, but I myself am not interested in exploring that
Additionally, the basis of these character turn arounds takes place after Sonic 2, SegaSonic Arcade, and Sonic 3. So the trio of Sonic, Ray, and Mighty has long disbanded, but these two happen upon each other again on chance. Ray is in the plot, but he's not a main character like these two.

JamesTheReggie In reply to rontufox [2011-05-02 00:22:06 +0000 UTC]
oh well ="P
you kinda have a point, but it's only because Sega never gave Ray that much of the spotlight like Mighty did, and even Mighty didn't get much time in the spotlight either. xD
I honestly would see Mighty as somewhat of a wanna-be tough guy, more in touch to his Fleetway personality than the one described in the Japanese Chaotix game that you use. I also envisioned Ray as something of a coward who sometimes was a nuisance, but also an unexpected savior in the end, kind of a thing. xD
but whatever. xP

I'm not trying to change anyone's mind here, or say that my interpretation is right. A lot of scrapped characters--and even used characters--have vastly different interpretations from video game to comic to cartoon and within the fanbase itself. I just wanted to share my underlying reasons for not including Ray so I didn't give the impression that I had something against the guy
Speaking of the Fleetway comic, I really wish I had known about it when I was younger, because I would've enjoyed it way more than the Archie comics I had to work with Unfortunately I've only been able to read a few Fleetway, none with Mighty so I never got to see that version of him.

Haha I love the bottom one. A nice show of their personality.
Also great job on the consistency with the references.
Especially with Sonic from behind which isn't always easy to do without making it look a bit strange.

rontufox In reply to Default-Deviant [2011-04-08 05:13:00 +0000 UTC]
Awesome, the turn arounds are so static that I was hoping the bottom gave a better view into their personalities
Thank you, I really wanted to get a handle on Sonic's spikes because I never know how to approach them. Though I have to admit, I feel like getting them to look consistent was a stroke of luck. I was dreading attempting the back view, so I practically closed my eyes and scribbled some shading down Ended up working, so hey.

This is great. I really like this! I've grown up with this sonic, but I didn't really get around to drawing him until the Sonic Adventure phase, so it's hard for me to draw classic.
But this is a great guide that puts drawing classic in perspective (plus, it is pretty cute).
Thanks!

Woo hoo, I'm glad you're thinking of using it to help you! I was hoping others could get some use out of it. Just keep in mind, classic style Sonic is always shorter than you think he is I draw him too tall all the time lol
π: 0 β©: 1
DTrain2695 In reply to rontufox [2011-04-07 00:00:30 +0000 UTC]
I know! The problem is when you draw him tall, his skinny legs look terribly awkward and very noticeable
I actually drew some sketches during class. It was pretty nice, so thanks

Awesome!
