Description
For future reference. I'm such a sucker for cutesy designs...I like the idea--completely contradictory demeanors and powers, yet the same aspiration to travel the world without ties to anyone or anything.
I really like Sonic with up-turned spikes, to me he looks livelier and even jittery that way lol. Heβs more than likely an adrenaline junky, after all.
And while Mighty's a peaceful, friendly guy, I made his appearance look somewhat threatening to get some juxtaposition going.

Good job. It looks like something somebody could use for a character WAD on SRB2.

I'd say you really nailed it, getting Sonic right from behind is tricky no matter what style you use. Both look like great character studies, it seems a shame to have figured them out from different angles and then your illustration at the bottom is a traditional view from the front. You better draw them more! More I say!

Oops, forgot to add that I do in fact plan on drawing them more, so stay tuned Though I am a relatively slow artist, so I apologize.

Haha, Sonic's design lends itself to almost always look awkward or boring from behind, doesn't it? That, and I still don't really understand how his eyelids work... lol
As for the front views at the bottom, my original intention was to show their height relationship by just having them stand there boringly, but then I decided to show their personalities and put them in an environment, I kinda overlooked the possibility of a different view, haha.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed!

But Sonic from behind isn't awkward and boring! Definitely not the latter, but often portrayed as the former, just because it's a difficult shape to get a handle on. It takes a certain amount of guts and skill to portray anything from behind effectively--as humans, we love faces, so you're already at a biologic disadvantage, so you have to find something else to create visual interest. But I really like that in Sonic art (it's part of why I'm so keen on backgrounds) so I am totally in favor of art depicting Sonic's backside, besides the fact that it is a crazy shape.

I'm referring more to a straight-on behind view--where the points of Sonic's spikes are facing the viewer straight-on. When drawn that way, his spikes no longer have any shape to them, as in the artist has to depend on shading to separate the spikes from the shape of his silhouette. (I made his spikes spread outwards and upwards to avoid that conundrum lol)

Haha, but I certainly agree with you about views from his behind can look awesome! As long as the artist takes the time to make sure the perspective of his spikes look right (which I personally think is difficult to do! )

Thanks!
And oh gosh, me too!! My weakness is color, whenever I draw I never plan out or even have the slightest idea what colors are gonna be incorporated, so I have to sit there trying to figure the colors out for forever. So it never occurred to me to draw with color, and use color to plan the composition instead of lines. Geez, I can't believe how much easier it is.

you are very welcome
My weakness I think is anatomy XD
I have always been impressed with your coloring skills. I always just use boring black outlines and color as I go, you go more spontaneous and creative and ohhh I just love it
Do what you like rontu! XD do what is easier, and it still looks amazing!

rontufox In reply to confirmedbachel0r [2011-03-25 04:32:28 +0000 UTC]
Definitely don't sweat about the anatomy too much, it's a difficulty everyone goes through as they develop, I assume.
Me? Spontaneous coloring? I really would've never guessed! Sometimes I feel like I'm sooo OCD with my art, like really rigid, at least my process is while I'm doing it... I hate being so methodological, ugh, but hopefully I'll be changing that. That said, it's a nice surprise to hear that my coloring is admired!
A big thanks for the support. It means a lot knowing someone looks forward to seeing how my work develops

When you color just let everything loose, art should more fun then a job XD
