Isn't it interesting whenever you go back to things you loved as a kid and then suddenly look at it from a different perspective as an adult?

I have been hit by nostalgia recently and I have been replaying some of my favourite games in my spare time. It has only been through replaying some of these older games that I can not only truly appreciate some things about my favourite franchises, but also come to really critique them at the same time. And how some of my opinions have actually changed.

I didn't like Amy nor Knuckles as a kid, but they have started to grow on me (admittedly thanks to excellent fan art).

Honestly, the only part about Amy Rose that truly bothers me is her infatuation with Sonic. Obviously, there is nothing wrong with having a crush or with someone who wants love in their life, but over the years, Amy's infatuation has turned into a destructive obsession that has become the forefront of her character. Which is partly why I never shipped Sonamy in the first place. He has shown that he only sees Amy as a friend, yet she chases him down and even tries to force him to marry her. Doesn't sound like a healthy nor sweet relationship too me. More like a screaming fan fawning over their idol.

One problem that have started to see with the Sonic franchise is that the characters that have so much potential are often just stereotyped and/or executed poorly. For instance, I think Amy could have some good development if she got over her crush on Sonic and focused on her own abilities/happiness. I can understand why, even with her bratty tendencies, she still has a fanbase. She is feisty but stylish and has the potential to kick some tail.

As for Knuckles, I think he is interesting as Sonic's first 'rival' and his background as the last of his kind. I don't like how he has been reduced to 'dumb muscle' over the years. That kind of character can be entertaining, but in this case I think is more insulting. Knuckles is extremely strong and stubborn, while at the same time being clumsy and naive. But that is mainly because of his isolated lifestyle.

I'm not one to get too into shipping (as especially in a fandom as notorious as Sonic's), but I will admit, I do have a few that I am fond of; Knuxamy being a more recent one. As a pairing, Knuckles and Amy fit together quite nicely:
1) Both are more on the hotheaded/argumentative side. They may argue with others and even with each other, but they have still shown to be caring individuals.
2) Amy seems to desire someone more stable, but Sonic is more fluidic and craves freedom. It is even explicitly stated in game manuals that he would hate to be tied down. And who can be more down-to-earth than someone like Knuckles?
3) Knuckles has expressed disappointment with how Sonic treats Amy in the past (ex. In Sonic Heroes). Despite his awkward shyness around girls, he does seem comfortable enough with Amy that I feel like he could express himself and even grow closer to her. This suggests that he values respect and may even eventually give the more polite old-fashioned attitude that Amy craves.
4) They do look out for each other; Knuckles has saved Amy's life before, and he is the first character Amy runs into whenever she is chasing Sonic. Amy would not take any invalid word from Knuckles, but she would likely treat him lovingly.
5) Both are seriously misunderstood by their friends and the fandom; Knuckles is seen as a stupid gangster while Amy is seen as a stalker obsessed with her senpai. The other characters may brush them off, but both are willing to hear what the other has to say.
6) Amy is extroverted and sociable while Knuckles is withdrawn; she gives him a taste of freedom away from the Master Emerald, and he helps keep her a little more grounded, helping her mature and settle down. They've got some things in common but differences that compliment each other.

It may be a less noticeable pairing, but Knuxamy is sweet in its own way I think. It is especially not a 'crack pairing' in my opinion (and more interesting than say, Sonamy or Knuxouge).
