Description
A scenario based on the sadly now-defunct Red Alert 3 Paradox mod. I've strived to include even more factions, such as splitting up the Allies and adding the Nazis back into the timeline.---
In 1918, the Spanish Influenza, so named because the Spanish press was the first in Europe to make neutral reports on the disease, ravaged the world. By 1920, when the disease finally abated, a total of 180 million people were dead, mostly the young and otherwise healthy. This disaster caused the wars raging through Europe to end, as more soldiers dropped dead from disease than they did from enemy action. The Russian Civi War was a narrow victory for the Bolsheviks, even though the leader of the Red Army, Leon Trotsky, died of the flu in 1920. China collapsed into warlordism as the already shaky authority of the Republic of China was outright destroyed by the flu. The post-war situation in Europe and the Americas was little better, with both old and new institutions on shaky ground.
The situation got worse in the 1930s. The Kingdom of Italy split in two in 1931, between the reactionary Catholic Kingdom and the fascist Italian Social Republic. In 1933, the radical Nazi Party gained absolute power over Germany. The United States shattered into several pieces, reforming into three pieces once the dust settled. The British Empire collapsed as a series of revolts, ending with much of Africa under control of African nationalist regimes. Japan, taking advantage of the chaos in China, invaded, prompting the Chinese to rally around a new emperor. New and terrible technologies were developed by brilliant and mad minds, and it seemed as though the world was going to fight another Great War. The Spanish Civil War in 1939 brought the world to the brink, but cooler heads prevailed.
However, in 1942, a new threat emerged. An alien species calling itself The Race invaded. The Race believed they were invading a world stuck in the Middle Ages, and so were unprepared for a war against an industrialized planet, but they were still a threat to all of mankind. The powers of Earth united against this alien threat, even investing in the creation of a League of Nations military, to repel the Race invasion. The Race conquest force was destroyed, and the advanced technologies they brought over were picked over by the victorious humans. Fearing mutually assured destruction and the possibility of weakening themselves against a future Race attack, the great powers avoided direct confrontation against one another, and were content to carry out their rivalries through various proxy conflicts.
Perhaps the most powerful bloc is the Axis powers, dominated by the Third Reich and maintained through mad science and madder politics. The secrets of the Race were improved upon by the research of Kammler, Strasse and Schmidt, fused with the dark knowledge of the Veil, a parallel universe unknwn even to the Race. The Germans are the first in many aspects: they made both the first Moon landing and the first faster-than-light jump. Much of the Moon is German, and there dark and terrible experiments are conducted to give Germany an edge in case of a second world war. The Wehrmacht is the most powerful army in continental Europe, and the regular soldier can count on being equipped with the finest dark energy rifles, and have advanced war machines and genetically augmented supersoldiers at his side.
The Comintern is the next powerful bloc, dominated by the Soviet Union. The Soviets love nuclear power, they have massive horde armies, massive tanks, and an all-pervasive police state to enforce the will of the Vozhd, the eternal saint of the proletariat. The Russian Orthodox Church has been revived, and Stalin is the Soviet Union’s patron saint. Their space program is doing quite well, and second only to the Reich’s, and they dominate near-Earth orbit. The knowledge of Nikola Tesla has been put to good use, and the Soviet Union's borders are defended by massive Tesla towers and heavy Tesla troopers fight in the Soviet Union's proxy wars.
The British are the force of conservatism and traditionalism in this rapidly changing world, and it hasn’t helped them one bit. The British still claim that they are masters of the world, despite a good portion of their empire having disappeared. In reaction, they have closed their society off to much of the outside world and hide behind their walls and guns. They’re just there to protect this sceptered isle from the Hun, the Red and the Frenchman. True, they still have a massive blue water navy and anti-orbital defenses that keeps the Reich from invading, but make no mistake: the sun has set on the British Empire. They tend to use outdated tech, still reliant on petroleum as a fuel. The British are a very militaristic society, but also a very paternalistic one: no man in Britain will starve so long as he does his duty to Queen and Country.
In response to Germany going insane and Britain retreating behind its shell, France has looked to times in history when it was the master of Europe and the center of attention. Naturally, this has brought out all the worst aspects of French history and mashed them up together. Bonapartism meets absolutism meets the worst excesses of the French Revolution. The French have a sense of aesthetic in technology, and everything they build has a distinct art deco feel. Even the Maginot Line looks like an art piece. Make no mistake, this technology is just as practical as those of their rivals.
While the United States has fragmented, it still maintains control over everything save for the Confederacy and New England. The American Union that succeeded it maintains that it is the arsenal of democracy; arsenal is right, because like anyone worth talking about, it’s a highly militarized state. Democracy, though…not so much. The Union's system is best described as totalitarian centrism: the New Deal has married the moral majority, all with a heavy dose of spreading the ideals of "democracy" around the world. America has fallen in love with nuclear power, and their entire society is reliant on nuclear technology. America's massive nuclear arsenal is their greatest asset.
To the East, the Japanese try to maintain their empire. They have pulled out of China because they couldn’t afford it, but they still maintain their Pacific empire. The Japanese have become masters of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, and the Japanese are building cities both on Earth and the Moon through the use of automated "nano cores." The Japanese have embraced progress, but their society retains a militarist, Bushido undercurrent.
The Catholic League is less one great power and more an alliance of middle powers. They think that the world is too mired in sin and needs to be cleansed. Consequently, they like their fire, whether it be conventional or in the form of plasma. The Catholic League has access to the Vatican's extensive archives, which give them a level of esoteric knowledge unmatched except perhaps by Berlin.
Tired of getting kicked around by the outside world, the Chinese will reclaim their rightful role as center of the world, and they will do so from the heavens. The Chinese are obsessed with building a space fleet from which they can bombard the rest of the planet, and their orbital dominance is second only to the Soviet Union's. Chinese spacecraft grow larger and more powerful by the year, and the Chinese have recently developed reliable energy shielding. The Chinese have even built a giant Moon laser to theoretically hit any city in the world and destroy it. It's just too bad that their soldiers are too inexperienced with plasma-based weaponry to hit anything reliably.
You can’t keep a good empire down, and so the Ottoman Empire rebuilt while Europe was busy bickering with itself. The Ottoman Empire’s power comes from the discovery of clockwork automatons in Istanbul, some dating back to the days of da Vinci. The Ottomans have taken advantage of the rise in Islamic fundamentalism, supplying their allies with clockwork machines.
The Persian Empire: they’re back and better than ever! The Persians are NOT an Islamic theocracy, but they do want to get rid of communism, fascism, nationalism and pretty much anything that challenges Persian dominance of the Middle East. While their technology is outdated, they are aided by the discovery of a strange text in the Arabian Desert which gives them access to functional sand and glass magic.
In Oceania, the genetic engineering that the British once experimented with has been embraced by the newly independent republics. Genetically engineered flora and fauna, oftentimes including humans, are used secure Oceania's power and independence. Many fear that these newly independent states are playing with fire, and won't be able to contain some of the new creatures they are designing.
Africa has largely been liberated by an alliance between the mad scientists of Greater Liberia, Ethiopia and the Kongo. Each African state has its own sort of mad science: the Liberians focus on robotics and energy weaponry, the Ethiopians on genetic engineering, and the Kongolese on replicating industrial processes through raw materials easily recovered in the jungles.
The League of Nations, or what's left of it, is based in Australia. The League sees the world going totally insane and wants to fix it, but they know that they are powerless to do so. The League has instead become a bloc of its own, seeking a way to escape from the planet in case of a global conflict or a Race invasion. To this end, the League has focused on conventional aerospace technologies that will allow them to escape the planet and at least give some portion of mankind the chance to survive.

Man, Turkmenistan (and Azerbaijan, by the way) was lucky. Seriously, getting forced to worship, live and die for Saint Jugashvili is scary.
And I totally would come for the clockwork harem girls, but I would be killed. By the Soviets. Then again, I wouldn't probably even know of the clockwork harem girls.

No, they didn't rename themselves. They're just watching for the inevitable Soviet invasion.

Mind if I ask a few
How is New England doing, is it democratic and does it have much autonomy from the British?
Are there any Jews left, even outside of Europe?
Are there any democratic countries left outside of the league of nations?
Aside from the moon, have any other parts of the solar system been colonized?
What is the population of this world?
If a war broke out, which bloc would probably end up winning?
Is the invironment even more screwed up than OTL because of all the fighting?
To what extent does all this technology effect civilian life?
And finally the most important question of all... Was there ever a Spongebob Squarepants equivalent in this world?

1. It's ostensibly democratic, but in truth run by the British military.
2. There are Jews outside of German-aligned Europe.
3. Not really.
4. There are a few bases on Mars.
5. Five and a half billion.
6. That's impossible to answer, because the blocs would get involved in pan-bloc politics.
7. A little, but that damage is restricted to areas the Race invaded.
8. Depends on where you live.
9. No.

so, their plan is similar to the Atomic Kingdom of China from RA3Paradox? Is the Catholics a reference to the Covenant? What inspired the biopunk ASEAN thing? are the Persians non-Muslim now? Does France have the Cult of the Supreme Being and that weird calendar again? How did Stalin become leader if Trotsky lasted until 1920?

RvBOMally In reply to Deltax10 [2014-10-05 00:50:41 +0000 UTC]
- The Chinese Empire want to dominate Earth from space, not flee it.
- No, I hadn't thought of the Covenant at all when making it. I was thinking about 40K and Paradox's Order of the Talon.
- "There isn't a lot done with biopunk. Let's toss it in somewhere. Why not Southeast Asia?" Specifically, I was thinking of a controlled Zerg.
- They're Muslims, but they're not Sunnis of the Wahhabist school like the Ottomans are.
- The French haven't brought back the cult, but they have brought back the Revolutionary calendar to be edgy.
- Trotsky died earlier here and didn't have much of a chance of taking power, and so Stalin actually had a head start in taking total control of the Soviet system.
