Maya, Lightwave, they're all equally useful! I actually kind of hate Maya because it's overly complicated, but I've been using it for almost a decade and it works for what I need it to do so I can't really complain too much. Definitely give 3D a try, though! The trick, really, is to make it look like it's NOT 3D by painting over everything. Takes a lot of painting expertise as far as form, lighting, and volume go but it's an incredible tool when you get used to integrating it into your illustrations.

Most are using 3D Max now. I haven't learned that one yet. Then again I am not that great at modeling. I was thinking about picking up on 3D again on my own, but thought classes might be better.

God I can only imagine how much time you put into your work. Your gallery is amazing.

I need to start using Maya for backgrounds too. It makes it look so much more accurate and you don't have to figure out lighting. love it. Great tutorial.

so good result
but for me grayscale pictures is too hard, coz when I painting gray, i doing it at the one tone. So when I coloring it, it looks like... fail.

This tutorial is fantastic! My only question is when/if you switch back to Photoshop after Maxwell Rendering/Maya? Do you switch back for digital painting, or do you do that in Maya?

Google sketchup works pretty well for for the modeling portion, and it's free. I don't really know about rendering software though.

Nah this is just super helpful and it's nice to see the way you used Maya for the background -- especially because I'm going to school for that this fall. Thanks a lot!

Azawindam [2010-07-03 03:41:24 +0000 UTC]

I never thought you would render the background in 3d for accurate perspectives. Nicely done!

Mamath In reply to ??? [2010-07-03 03:22:13 +0000 UTC]

How long did it take you to do all the stuff in Maya? That seems like a lot of work but then so is working out good perspective on paper so... I can see that the 3D route there would give you more freedom, too.

I-I've never seriously considered it but now I'm like: Mind. Blown.

I love seeing the process behind your images! I also like the note about how using 3d tools like this isn't cheating. You're still doing the work, so of course it isn't.
