I'm not sure if it is the same with PTS but on Photoshop you can overlay a color on a greyscale (or in this case a bluescale) picture to give it shaded color.

I'm not sure if this is the right answer, but to me it looks like Ryky is using a silhouette technique to find the desired shape of the tree.

Aww how beautiful! I had trouble drawing trees, so thanks a lot! Btw what kind of brushes did you use and how did you change the colors??

about the changing colours: they probably made a layer over the original monotone sketch and set the top layer to color mode(which ive only seen in photoshop)

maybe i'm so stoopeed and probably is cuz today i didnt sleep but,,, why you shape it first in blue and then later in green? (I hate myself already for ask that). By the way, the step process for the tree is amazing, will help a lot when creating backgrounds!
