Description
A battleship design used by the Akurian Space Defense force. Unlike the Main Akurian Starfleet battleships SDF Battleships usually lack the VLs missile systems used by Fleet designs, instead focusing on carrying greater lance gun firepower. This is mainly because the SDF has access to large numbers of cruise missile armed Fast Attack craft, given that the SDF operates close to akurian planets, so their battleships have little need to carry long range anti ship missiles. Also not carrying the VLS systems means that the thunderer class is nearly 19 million tons lighter than the starfleet operated firelance class, and yet still possesses greater lance firepower. Add on the lower crew requirement and the shorter ranged and slower, but easier to maintain FTL system, the Thunderer is significantly less expensive to acquire and operate over the Firelance class. However this also means the class is unsuitable for offensive operations outside of Akurian Territory. The thunderer is the fater of two battleships designed off the same hull, the second design being the Tornado class, which is more heavily armored and carries larger guns, but is slower.
