WARNING: BIG FILE

I've seen many people say that it's not possible to make transparent things in SAI but it is. (~o3o)~

I used to export my files as .psd and make them transparent in Photoshop, but it's much easier this way.

This is how I made my ID and Shimeji transparent. ^^

Hope it helps! If you have any questions regarding this tutorial, feel free to ask me! 8D

----------
PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION!
Many commonly asked questions are answered here.

-Use File>Save As or File>Save. If one doesn't work, then use the other.

-But no matter what...ALWAYS choose the second PNG save option!

-If it doesn't work, then update SAI.
NOTE! I have realized that there are multiple "strains" of SAI. So far, I have noticed 2, but both of these have been able to save transparencies. If this tutorial didn't work for you, you may have gotten some weird "strain."

Otherwise, I really don't know what's wrong. Sorry. ):

On the site where you get the updates, I believe there's a page that has english instructions on how to update the program?
I'm not sure what you mean, though. :c From what I remember, I only had to save the file in my SAI folder?

Ay, I always save my files as .png but the window wont pop up
I don't really know what I'm doing wrong
I usually sketch my drawing out on paper, scan copy and paste, then use multiple layers inking it, but whenever I save it as .png, no window pops up...
am I doing something wrong or...

Sarucho In reply to Goddard-Grenadee-23 [2012-07-16 16:07:18 +0000 UTC]

No, it's not you. ;u;
It's just the version of SAI you have, and apparently updating the program doesn't help. xD;
You could always try updating though! There are just lots of "sub-versions" of SAI that I don't know how to differentiate.
I'm sorry that I couldn't be much more help. D:

Though if you have Photoshop/GIMP/whatever, save it as a .PSD or another respective file and you can make it transparent in that program instead.

You probably either have an older version of SAI, or the wrong variation.
From what other people have told me, and from my experience, there are a few variations of SAI, but I don't know how to differenciate them.

I'm sorry for replying so late! It turns out that I'm bad with replying.
I do hope I helped in some way!

Is it alright to just go to "Layers" then choose "Luminance to Transparency?" 'Cause....it doesn't pop up....and that's how I usually make my layers transparent. But it also makes the color to gray....do you mind?

I've never actually tried that before;;;;;;;;;;;

You may just have the wrong version of SAI, and you might need to upgrade it.
I'm just as frustrated as you, because I don't know how to tell you how to get the correct version because there are variations in the program. D: I deeply apologize.

Try updating. If that doesn't help, you may just have the wrong version of SAI.
SAI has a few different versions of itself and I'm not sure about how to differentiate them. D: I'm sorry if that didn't help you at all!

I've noticed that the SAI programs on both of my computers are slightly different, but I don't know how to differentiate them, I'm sorry. You may just want to try updating.

alright 8D
well, first thing you should do it save it as a psd file, and erase the whole background so it's 'transparent'.
next go to this site:
[link]

open the drawing and all the layers will be transferred safely to that program.
the background should be transparent if you cleared the background on SAI.
save the file as a PNG and it should be transparent and there you go!! : D
