I'm using Apophysis 7x, and for some reason at step 2, mine looks nothing like yours. Is this one made from scratch in this tut, or am I supposed to start with one already made?

you're suppose to start with a new blank flame and add each xform 1 by 1

Hmm... I must be doing something wrong then, because mine has much less depth to it that this. Just some laser-esque rectangles. Would you mind explaining how to use weights to me? Do I change the weight under the "Colors" tab? And do I change the weight of each transform under each transform (hard to explain)?

the weight us the value just under the each transfrom on the editor

And it's under the "Xaos" tab, right? What does "Xaos" even mean?

SaTaNiA In reply to Coterabeth [2010-06-28 08:18:46 +0000 UTC]
no it's above
It's the small box just under the preview box and the Xform number.
Xaos is the way each variations are link each other (something like this to make it easy )

A lot of people have noted me with this same problem.
Part of the problem is which version of Apophysis you are using.
In 7X 2010 (R12) Version if I set the weight to 15 I lose the preview.
If you are using the previous version of Apo7x the directions in the tut will not work right either (also it's really slow). You should be using "Apophysis7x-normal" for the newest version of Apo7x
A weight of 5 on T2 works to make it look like the preview
(You should be seeing "Name: " and "Weight: " at the top of the editor)
Also set your master scale to around 15 to get the preview of Step #2
In step 2 it says keep Linear=1, by default in 7x version it's Linear3D but either one will work.
If for some reason you don't see the right preview go back to Transform 1 and reset the post transform (this happens to me in 7x version but not every time, I have no idea why it works sometimes and doesn't others)
At this point you might want to do a "calculate colors values" (under the Flame tab)
(Not part of the tut but it will spread your gradient out over the 2 transforms, this is a personal preference)
Next step is add the cylinder, add transform and make Linear3D=0
In the tut it says a value between .25 and 0.7
For me a value of 0.07 works to get the preview view of #3
And I set Preblur to 12 (this makes the cylinder longer so that it fills in the middle parts the way it should)
Another problem I have with 7x is that it keeps changing the master scale to a small value so I have to keep resetting it back to 15 each time and resetting the X,Y positions in the adjustment tab.
Click post transform and move it up about 1.5 units (0.5 up 3 times)
Duplicate that transform (the post should still be activated) and move it down 6 times (at 0.5) or 3 units
At that point you should have the preview form shown below step #4
(may be a little different depending on your gradient)
Xaos is a relatively new function, it controls how the transforms "see" (or don't see) each other, it also has an effect similar to what weights do.
Assuming you followed the tut and my directions go to transform 3 (the first cylinder/preblur)
click the xaos tab, assuming you see the paths set as TO (Path to) on the one that says "to 2" (our splits) set it to 0 to see what happens...
You will see that the left side of the cylinder "disappears" and yet we still have the cylinder affecting the flame, just not on the splits transform.
The right side is still there because it's being "seen" by transform 4.
I've been told that Xaos is either just off or on (0 or 1) but I know from personal experience that going higher than 1 can greatly affect the flame depending on the type of fractal.
This is just for the example to show you what xaos does: Turn the xaos on back to 1 on T3, select the first transform (our Elliptic), under the xaos tab on Path "to 1" set it to 0.
You'll see the elliptic is now turned off (because path to itself is 0) and yet it is still affecting other parts of the flame. Experiment with this on each transform of whatever flame you are working on and you can create all kinds of things.
Set it back to 1 and look at the preview, then set to to 10 and you'll see how it kind of changes like if you changed the weight of it.
You said you were changing the weights under the transform tab, that leads me to believe you are using Apo3D, not 7x
It won't look exactly the same as different versions of Apophysys treat the plugins differently.
Also if you ARE using the Apo3d version you'll need to change the rotation to 90 or -90 to closely match the preview. I personally prefer to use the Apophysis2.09 version for this type of fractal (so I don't have to keep resetting the scale every time)

Inspirational Tut, I've seen a lot made from it, I already knew how to do it before but it's nice to have a tut for other people to refer to, thanks for the hard work you put into it

This looks awesome. I'm a beginner, with Apo version 2.09. How do you get a new, blank flame? Apo always opens with a random flame already open...

Thanks for the tutorial
I still miss some things, but I learned a ton of things by just doing it once
Most of the time I try to reproduce it, it somehow won't work, but it's definitely a failure on my part :/
Anywas: great thanks once again
Can't wait to play with it
