Description Hey guys!

I finally made a tutorial on hairing...been meaning to for ages! I get a lot of questions on this so hopefully this will help a bit. Of course, if you have any questions please ask.

I've only been doing this a couple of years so I'm really no expert, but I hope it is helpful nonetheless.

The unicorn in this tutorial was a commission for =cloudrunner64 of her character, Nalani. I will add some photos of her on deviantart soon.

Hope you enjoy

Great tutorial! How long do you think an ounce of mohair would last? Thanks

Thanks! 1 oz is usually good for 1 or 2 sculptures.

This is helpful thank you very much! Nice that you took the time to share.

That glue IS awesome by the way. I put some hair on a doll that I'm making with that stuff and the hair ended up not working so good so i decided to take it off and make it with clay instead. Man it was hard to pull it all out again that glue worked so good!

Thanks! I can sometimes get it off without wrecking paint, but you have to snap it off a certain way. It's amazing stuff!

They're resin not glass, I buy them from "Dreaming Tree Studio" on etsy, who is ~CozmicDreamer on here

Just out of curiosity - does the term "mohair" really cover fur from any animal in English, or did I just get something wrong? I'm from Germany, and here, "Mohair" only refers to yarn of fabric made from Angora Sheep wool.
Otherwise, great and useful tutorial! I bet I'll come back to that (if I ever move from making dragons to making unicorns, that is xD)

Mohair is a blanket term that people use for goats mostly, sometimes for sheep, lamb, alpaca, and I guess anything else too. I hope I haven't been using the term too loosely, but I do hear it for all sorts of animals. That's interesting though! The hair I used for this sculpture came from a goat I believe. Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

tienna-sculpts In reply to scenceable [2011-04-14 12:48:36 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting to know, thanks! I don't think you've used it too loosely if it applies for any kind of fur, I've just been a bit confused and curious, that's why I asked. Different languages can be tricky after all So thanks for clearing this up!
I also think you used angora goat hair as their hair is always this curly ^^

One day I'll get my grubby little hands on a big ol' tub of this mystical fabri-tac and see just how much it improves my life. I use hot glue because fabri-tac - like so many other apparently marvelous products from across the sea - is totally unavailable in Britain. ): How much is it where you are? I don't know whether the few that I could buy are horrendously overpriced or not.

Fabby tutorial, I always wondered why mysterious process you used to get the hair looking so right! It's very clearly written too.

scenceable In reply to Magweno [2011-04-06 17:13:17 +0000 UTC]

The giant tube that I have now was $18 I think, and then the smaller tubes are like $10 here (and the big ones are more than double the size, so I go with the big one) but that's at the canadian craft stores and everything is way overpriced. I try to go to the states to get art stuff when I need it. I'm sure it would be cheaper online though. If it turns out to be super hard to find online I can always buy it and ship it for you. But like I said, it's expensive here But make sure you check craft stores or even model airplane type stores, not art stores.

I'm not sure if hot glue yellows overtime. My issue with it is it doesn't stick well, but the hair on your guys is embedded in fur, so it sticks on well.

I'm glad the tutorial is clearly written, I had a lot of trouble deciding what to say. It's one of those things that becomes so automatic, so actually explaining it is hard. So yay!! Thanks

Magweno In reply to scenceable [2011-04-06 20:44:46 +0000 UTC]

Ehh the small bottles here are double that Canadian price :/ I dunno, the super-glue I use is pretty tough, it just dries so fast I glue my fingers together constantly and it bleaches roving which is annoying.

Yeah the hot glue is working really well so far, 'course I haven't been making them that long so I don't know if it yellows :S But I try to keep it hidden with the feathers so it shouldn't be visible anyway. I heard it doesn't stick so well to polymer clay, it works fine around the feet and heads of my dolls so that's weird? Maybe my tests aren't thorough enough!

Yeah it's hard isn't it! And it like triples the time it takes you to do it so you get all confused and spend too much time staring at what the tutorial's about... idk! You did a great job though!

scenceable In reply to Magweno [2011-04-06 21:57:29 +0000 UTC]

Heh, it's funny, canada prices seem so expensive compared to the states, but compared to europe they're so cheap. I'm lucky I live close to the border at least, I can wander over once in a while.

Come to think of it, I have stuff I've glued with hot glue and I'm not sure if I've seen yellowing. I think the glue is hot enough that it sort of melts the fur which then sticks to the clay even more. I know I used to attach hair with hot glue, and I could rip it off with my fingers fairly easily, often times without damaging the paint. Ripping hair off now always pulls the paint right off too.

Pff yeah, tell me about it.. Prices are ridiculous over here, not least because of the tax increase ): I'm jealous.

BlackCurtains [2011-04-06 05:45:46 +0000 UTC]

This is very interesting. I would have never guessed it's glued on like that, I thought it was rooted. You can't tell from the pictures that it's glued. It always looks so natural and has so much movement. I think the way the hair lays gives your sculptures personality.

scenceable In reply to BlackCurtains [2011-04-06 17:06:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've tried rooting hair before but it always turned out really badly. A lot of people hear glue, and it sounds unprofessional or something, but good quality glue helps a lot! And thanks so much, I'm looking forward to making belltock come to life

It's very interesting to see how this is gone. I've never wondered how you've done the mane and tails, but I looks at this nonetheless.

This shows how much work you truly put into each and every one of your sculptures. Good job!
