In a parallel timeline, after the stealing and subsequent destruction of the USS Enterprise, Starfleet was forced to decide what ship would be the next to carry its name. After Kirk and his crew returned home, they were given command of a new ship: the USS Yorktown. A few years later, Starfleet commissioned the first production Excelsior class. Being the largest and most sophisticated ship in the fleet, Starfleet agreed it would be a fitting flagship to carry the name Enterprise, and commanded by the newly promoted Captain Hikaru Sulu.(A cool alternate timeline event me and my brother came up with. )

I really expected an Excelsior class ship at the end of ST IV. Nice work.

I don't remember where, but I heard that they wanted to go with an Excelsior class Enterprise-A, but the ship had a lukewarm reception and so they went with the Enterprise class (Constitution refit).
