Check out that retro gamer chick! Hm, the chick is looking a little confused...maybe he's too young to appreciate the good ol' gaming from back in the day. This was taken about 4 years ago, Stew Bebee the silver laced sebright (who we ultimately gave away because he was a rooster, but such a sweetie he was!) with an NES controller.

That is awesome! 30 chickens plus 3 roosters at one time huh? I would love to have that (minus the roosters)! All those breeds I want, it'd be a dream come true! XD What was that like? I'd imagine the clean-up to be a pretty big chore! And boo for aggressive roosters! When we hatched some out, they were only two days old and they were already attacking my adult hens for getting too close to their sister. Such bad boiz! That's some impressive testosterone they got pumping in those fuzzy little bodies.
Yeah, hawks are a huge problem here too! We've had a lot of close calls, and thought we lost some when we saw all the missing feathers and the hawk just hanging out on the fence. Luckily they somehow missed and my chickens weren't taken away! We also have coyotes and squirrels and rats (the latter two have unfortunately killed several of my quails), ugh, leave my babies alone!
Yep! Toy breeds aren't the most productive, but they sure are cute (and less destructive in the yard)! I guess the same goes for toy dogs...not great for guarding anything but they're a joy. I'm probably biased, but I'd take little fancy chickens over production chickens any day. They eat a lot less, poop a lot less too, but the eggs aren't that much smaller when you do get them. And though they lay less, they lay for a longer period of time in my experience. My layers pretty much went into menopause after 3 years of 5 eggs a week, and were very prone to disease later. I guess that's what happens when you're bred to lay so much, you're just more likely to get sick. But my little girls are still churning out their 1 egg a week and as healthy as if they were just a few months old, despite being 6 years old. They're super sweet too and come when called and knock on the back door to be let in haha. Here's one of my girls after I gave her a haircut! Normally she has an afro that covers her whole head so she can't see anything and runs into walls or flies head-down into a bush. XD scythickitty.deviantart.com/ar… Whoops, sorry, that's probably way more information about chickens than you'd like haha.

Yes it was quite the mess to clean up xD with so many chickens at once, taking the eggs was the hardest to do, since there were several black chickens that still believed her eggs were going to hatch, the poor girls. Then there was the odd egg we see around the yard, but the eggs are mostly found in the chicken coop. I have to wonder about those roosters sometimes... They certainly act like that
Aww you're lucky the hawk missed, I think what ended ours was because the neighborhood dog snuck in the yard and ate the rest! That heartless animal! The poor things...
Yeah, some days I wish we had toy breeds instead but I don't think it would've made much of a difference to protect them from those hunters no matter how hard we try. She's a lovely one isn't she?

Haha I love it when they go broody! It's hilarious! The way they puff up and screech when you so much look at them! No silly girls, that...that wooden square block you're sitting on is not an egg, and no it's not going to hatch! XD Luckily mine were always ok with me manhandling them and taking the eggs, though I've heard for others, when they try to take the eggs, blood is drawn! Since it snows up there, did you guys still let them out in the winter, or were they all inside a coop for awhile until the snow thawed?
For some of the super fluffy ones, that does help since the hawk will sometimes misjudge and just grab a load of fluff instead (which happened with ours, and there used to be a video on Youtube showing it as well), but definitely since they're so small, that also makes them easier targets! We're not worried when we let our big, fat girls out, but when the little ones our out, we always have to keep watch. And that is so sad! Once a dog gets in, there's not much they can do to survive, unless you have the ones that can fly. I'm sorry about that! That must have been terrible! I would be devastated if that happened to my girls.

I'll have to ask but I think they would be brought somewhere safe and warm for the winter. (like a garage or shed haha xD) mostly because the chicken coop is designed for the summer months. One of the girls didn't mind us taking her eggs but we were pre-warned about their protective behaviour xD
Speaking of YouTube videos I saw one where a small boy gave a chicken a hug~ it was so sweet
yeah it was really devastating when I heard the news about the dog incident. I bet, since the girls are like family to you. I think the only advice I can give is make sure dogs can't get in to your property. :S it's kind of hard to do that when you've got a lot of farm land. Or I think you can talk to the owner about it if they're willing to listen.

Our coop is also more designed for spring/summer weather (which is basically 8 months of the year here) and is definitely not very rain-proof! It is actually a large bird cage one of our family friends built for his "senior project" at school, but he gave it to us since he didn't have any pets. We modified it a little to make it more suitable for chicken life, but since it doesn't have any nest boxes and the doors are too small to fit them in, any time our girls want to lay, they make a big fuss (you can hear their complaints all the way down the street) until we take them into the garage into a little plastic box to lay! Silly girls!
That Youtube video sounds very cute! But I've also seen a lot of videos where the result definitely was not as cute from little kids hugging a chicken!
Luckily for us, the only dog that can get to where the chickens are is our dog, and all he is interested in is lapping up that sweet, delicious poo. He also licks and nuzzles their butts, hoping more comes out, but they either ignore him or attack him. Silly doggie! But at our old house, we definitely had a problem with other people's dogs and cats coming onto our property (as well as coyotes). It was not uncommon to find someone's cat on top of our mouse cage while I had it outside for some fresh air! One of our parakeets had also been attacked and eaten by someone's cat, and we saw it right as it was scampering away, leaving blood splattered all over the garage. And that was in the suburbs! I'd imagine it is significantly harder when you're on a farm!

Haha, it just has to be a nice little box they can safely lay eggs in xD we had a little compartment filled with boxes our chickens would use.
Oh yeah where someone get's attacked afterward DX not fun

We've tried putting boxes into the coop, but alas, cardboard boxes just get destroyed, and the plastic ones won't fit into the coop (the door is smaller than a sheet of paper)! Or if it did fit, they just ignore it altogether! My girls are rather picky about their box! XD Did you name your any of your 30 chickens? If so, what were their names? Is there any way for you guys to make their roaming space smaller, so that it would be easier to make it predator proof should you keep chickens again in the future?

Awwww~ they don't like wood or something? <8D such picky girls you have.
No I never got the chance <8D though I do remember one of the girls I had that I got along with really well. She didn't seem to mind me taking her eggs anyways xD she was a gentle girl. We could try for sure, though we'll have to wait and see with the hawks that hang around.

Picky and elderly girls they are! I guess old people don't like change, and that goes the same for chickens too! XD It's pretty funny actually to see the differences in behavior between our younger hens and our old girls. It mirrors people a lot actually.
Awww, gentle chickens are so cute! My two newer chickens are really friendly, but they're not gentle one bit! They eat like starving hyenas and run around destroying things like a sugar-high 2 year old. Meanwhile, some of my elderly hens are the most gentle ever (they were like that since they were young), so everyone loves holding and feeding them, since they don't leave mangled fingers. If you ever get around to those new chickens, I'd love to see pictures of them! ^^ Cheers!

Haha, yeah our chickens liked to clump up in one group for whatever reason xD the sad part about it was they were a walking target. And then they would scatter once they sensed danger. xD it was funny to see even though you're trying to make sure none of them get caught.
Haha, awww two younger chickens who don't want to grow up or follow the rules yet xD. I'll definitely ask and see when we can get new chickens again. Then I'll take pictures of them when we do. xD

My chickens like to clump together too. Where one goes, the others will follow! I guess safety in numbers? But I agree, it does make them look like a walking target. My older, smaller hens are smart and stay hidden under the bushes, but my younger ones jut sit out there smack in the middle of the yard without care. Go hide girls! There's hawks everywhere! One of my oldest hens actually runs and hides under my legs when she's scared (usually at night when I let them out to go inside the garage to their warm plastic bin), it's so cute! Unfortunately that means I've also accidentally kicked her a few times since I didn't realize she was there.
While the elderly chickens just like sticking close to the coop and lawn, being very gentle and do minimal damage to the lawn the younger chickens go EVERYWHERE and destroy EVERYTHING. It's amazing what a single 4 pound chicken can do in her endless quest for tasty morsels! Not to mention she learned how to undo one of the door hinges and frequently escapes the coop. Rebellious youngsters nowadays! XD

haha at least you have a few girls that have experience xD. Awww that's so cute, that's too bad when animals do that to you though. I know I've stepped on my dog's tail by accident when he snuck up behind me O:
Ah yes, the younger ones learn fast xD but so naughty and mischievous! I remember a colt who would open the doors and let all the rest of my grandma's horses loose and then she would go back to her bed and pretend to be that one good little horse XD.

Haha I step on my dog quite often on accident! He likes laying in front of the bathroom while I'm showering, and after I come out, I don't notice him lying there and plop! What is this hairy rug here? And of course stepping on his little toes when he's milling around in the kitchen, looking for free treats. Silly doggies!
Whaaaat! That is one cheeky little horse haha! So sneaky and smart! Does your grandma still have that horse? Those must have been fun times having all the horses out when she didn't want them out. XD

Haha, xD yes they are quite silly. I know my dog was for the past couple weeks of wearing a cone (poor guy ) ramming into things, bumping into me and my family, knocking things over... Much fun
XD yes she is, though from what i hear she got her attitude from her mother . No she had to give them all away when she moved from the farm
yeah it was fun having all the horses but such hard work! XD

ScythicKitty In reply to RoseMiriArt [2014-05-24 04:01:24 +0000 UTC]
Oh no! The cone of shame! XD But I bet that must have been entertaining to see to a certain extent!
Like mother like daughter eh? Haha did her mom do a lot of antics like that as well, or was it more just the personality she inherited? Still, it's funny to see how similar a family can be! And that's too bad that she had to give them all away! But it's understandable. Plus having that many horses, I'm sure it was tons of work! (And all that poopies to clean up after!)

RoseMiriArt In reply to ScythicKitty [2014-05-24 13:18:26 +0000 UTC]
Haha yup xD, though it was pretty sad to watch the dog almost clobber himself as he's bumping into things and straining his neck when he's bumping into the door trying to get outside.<8D
Nah, mostly her personality. If you ride the mother on a hot summer day, she will drag you into a lake to get cool and not just her legs xD. My mom still tells me how many times she got wet from those experiences herself, and the fact it took her a long time to get the horse out of the water xD. They both love doing such stubborn things. XD yeah, it was mostly because of the hard work they had to do it. But most of the horses are still alive out there somewhere as far as I know xD

Silly dog! That must have been a sight to see! Does he do this every time he gets the cone?
Wow! I would not want to be the one riding that horse on those days! Getting dragged into the lake, and then taking forever to get the horse back out? Hahaha! Oh man, but still, that sounds hilarious! That's good to hear most of the horses are still alive out there. I'm sure your grandma was able to find good homes for them. Would you ever get horses when you get your own place?

RoseMiriArt In reply to ScythicKitty [2014-05-26 12:08:47 +0000 UTC]
Yes he does... Mostly to break the cone so he can get to his injuries himself I think, especially when he has those drains the vet gives him for the first week.
Hahaha yup, xD that horse is so stubborn when she wants her break. Yeah, I was happy to hear that too. It was still sad to see them go but it was all for the best.
XD unless I have a good place to take care of a horse... Probably not for a long time... XD
