Description
Finished product can be found here: selenaede.deviantart.com/art/Sβ¦A few people were wondering how I make my art and often think I trace screencaps. This is actually how I do it.
My scanner and camera are terrible and drain all of the life out of the color in my drawings and sketches as you might have noticed. That's why I tend to clean things up digitally.
This is a sketch of one of my Living Dead Dolls, Siren.

There is a tool in the toolbox called "Select by Color" which looks like a little hand pointing at 3 colored blocks. You use that to select the color you want to keep - in the case of this example it would be to select the color black. You need to be very careful with this tool though because it will also take similar shades of the color as well, instead of just the one you want, so if you are doing outline work you want to use a color not present in the original image like neon green or fuchsia or something. The more offensive;y bright and neon the color, the more likely it is to be a good choice (except for yellow, which is almost never a good choice).Β
Once you have the color selected you go to the select column at the top of the work space (right between edit and view). You click it and select the "Invert" option from the drop down list. Then you press the delete key on your keyboard and everything but the color you selected should be deleted.
Hope that helps

Do you use GIMP 2 for gradients, SelenaEde ?

Awesome. On crystal pony textures, I use GIMP for coloring the texture.

I know how to select by colour, but I really don't get this. How do I delete the unwanted background?

Click select, click Invert and then hit the delete button on your computer keyboard.Β

They are indeed. You just need to make sure you save them from the download button and have them zoomed in fully, otherwise they might end up blurry (DA doesn't always directly support their full size and will shrink them, so this is the only way to ensure that doesn't happen).Β

That doesn't seem to be working. How many layers do I need?

You actually don't need any layers at all. It works best without them.

Did you use the color selection tool and then invert your selection? If you didn't then it won't work right.

It's pretty much the same processes as this. I just do the bald pony and clean it up, then do the hair, then do any clothes or accessories.Β

Lol; I just erase the background around the lines manually. Takes ages, but result is the same. XD I guess I just can't cope with any other programme cept Paint. Β

something that doesn't take ages:
make your outline a VERY bright color (like neon red)
then save as a 16 color bitmap
erase all the ugly colors so you save just the outline
save as PNG, color, and done!
