Description Huge file ahoy!

As i promised some time ago, here's a tutorial on Japanese painting. I was very surprised how many people wanted to see a tutorial. I hope I haven't disappointed you. I'm not very good at making tutorials and I have a feeling I may have forgotten to include something important. I tried to share some tips and do a clear step-by-step tutorial but I'm not sure if it's any good.
Also, I'm sorry some of the pictures are so blurry. :/
Oh well, I'll be happy if at least someone finds it useful. :> If you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them.

Here's the finished picture: :

Thanks for sharing! A little question. What kind of ink do you use for linearts?

No problem at all! :>
I use an ink brush pen by Pentel. This one, to be precise: [link]

Wow!
Once I have money to afford art supplies I'm totally gonna do something with this!
I've always loved japanese-styled paintings, and I'd love to be able to do one myself!
Awesome tutorial!

Thank you! I'm very glad to hear that.
Also, you don't need to buy the most expensive supplies, my recommendations tend to be a little expensive but there are a lot of more affordable supplies that work just as well. :>

Haha, I didn't mean your supplies. Art supplies in general I haven't been able to afford lately. I've been filling up every possible page of my sketchbook because I haven't been able to spare money to buy a new one.

Oh! That's a little troublesome. :/ I can't imagine what it's like not having a sketchbook (or many blank pages left), I feel like mine keep piling up. I buy all kinds of sketchbooks even though I didn't need them because I want to try different papers. I do use them all, though.

Earthen-wolf-spirit In reply to ShadeofShinon [2011-09-13 21:13:56 +0000 UTC]

I would like to do that kinda think, if I could. o:
I just recently bought a new sketchbook, and have been filling it up with new drawings.
Unfortunately the company I usually bought my sketchbooks from got bought out or something, and now their paper is thinner, and I like it less, because markers can leak through. D:

Hey, do you have any tips for blending watercolors?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to Safury [2011-08-10 22:11:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad to hear you think so! :>
Umm, let's see. I usualle blend watercolours by adding more water when the paint is still a little wet. If the paint has dried it might not be as easy but in some cases it might be a better option. I'm sorry I can think of any examples right now. ^^' It also depends on how much you want to blend the colour. If you add a lot of water to wet paint the water may wash the paint away and make the tone a lot lighter. If you don't want to blend it that much, don't use so much water.
I'm pretty bad at giving advice like this. I think it's work better with pictures. ^^' But I guess there are plenty of good watercolour tutorials around which might help you. :>

SulZala In reply to ??? [2011-08-02 16:23:33 +0000 UTC]

Why can't I fav this more than once.
Aaaaand I've finally found a good use for my old water colours and my pewter miniature brushes - but I really need a larger one for the coffee xDD (My dad said I was totally ripped with my miniature brushes, but my parents always bought those from the convenience store for me - and those were horrible and awful quality.)

I think one of the things that makes this painting have this beautiful japanese look is the way you drew the clouds, the islands, the vegetation, Articuno's tail and Moltres' wings of fire.

Hm... how large is the paper you use? It looks a bit larger than A4, at least in height, but it's definitely smaller than A3. Any tips on scanning larger-than-usual pictures except using a larger scanner (xD)?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to SulZala [2011-08-02 21:45:49 +0000 UTC]

I'm really glad to hear you liked it! I hope it'll be useful for you. :>
I know what it's like to have terrible quality brushes. I prefer using high qualityc synthetic fibre brushes but I do have a very fine Italian fur brush, too. The brush you use for applying coffee doesn't have to be huge or very high quality. Any bigger brush is fine.

I also think the clouds and the way I draw the islands (and also mountains) makes it look more Japanese. :>

The paper I use is 15 x 40 cm sized. Personally I don't hink the size of the paper matters that much, just that the bigger the paper the more details you can cram in it etc. I scan these paintings in two parts and then merge the parts using Photoshop. Sometimes it doesn't come out very good and the merging line is quite visible but sometimes I just can't help it. :/

^ ^ Thank you so much! How would you know what lines to make thicker, or thinner, to give it the old Japanese look?

No problem at all! :> I enjoy sharing tips and advice.
Hmm, I don't actually know, I just draw. Usually I just made detail lines (feathers, eyes, flames) thinner and long, simple lines bolder. Also, if several lines join together at some point (look at Articuno's tail) I usually make the joint line bolder. I wish I could've been more specific in the inking part but I honestly don't know how to explain what I do. :'>

BloodWolf93 In reply to ShadeofShinon [2011-08-03 02:36:12 +0000 UTC]

I see now! (derp..) I've just been having a hard time with doing that..I was trying to make a large Lugia with the thin and thick lines, but I think I failed..^ ^; But now I hope I've improved! ^ ^ Thank you so much! :3 I hope you continue making the japanese style art; how you make it is so real and makes the pokemon look as if they actually were once real, and ancient people drew them...
