Description
The projectile for the Ordinatus submitted earlier, the round in Question is SAP-HE-I for those interested which basically means it does just about everything it can to make the target miserable. Based on the WH40K 'bolt' its essentially a miniaturized and more 'modern' bolt type weapon being an assisted gyro-jet round (a rocket essentially)Ordinatus Weapon can be found here.

Odd... And interesting, it's a like a mixed between a conventional bullet, a RPG, grenade shell, and gyrojet bullets. And compacted.
I've seen each of these concepts before.

How much money do you think producing just one of these would cost?

The imagine that the creation of these is both very expensive and time consuming.Β

Bolts were case-less. Which was weird since tey had a ejector....
Anyway, looks bad ass.

Bolts cant really be Caseless as they make reference to engraved 'blessed bolt casings' in Dark Heresy as relics. Hard to engrave ash, or wear it around ones neck.

I've always seen data implying that they are case-less. But I could be wrong.

So it's a 21mm AP-HE-Frag Gyroject-like projectile assisted out of the barrel by a very low pressure booster charge similar to that used in 40mm grenades? AWESOME!

cool in theory but that's not a lot of powder for such a large round.

Fantastic work, mate. I wasn't 100% on the makeup of bullets in general, but bolts in particular; this is awesome reference.

don't rely on this solely mate.
it's an awesome picture yes but there are some incoherence.
Being a military in the artillery branch it's kinda my job
Quick example (and fyi s-a-p)
The armor piercing part is impraticable.Armor piercing rounds are made of a small tungsteen or any hard alloy part coated in low density material,so only the "spike" reach the target at super high speed.
Also, the base detonant would mean that this round is HESH (High Explosive Squash Head) meant to be antitank with a soft explosive at the tip. In this one,the projectile would deform and tear apart before the charge would lit.
The drawing is amazing, that is for sure. For tech details, well it's a little unstable
I'd be happy to provide my help to you in the future,if you would like.
Jay

The first thing that ran through my head when I saw this, "How much does one of those things cost?"
Seriously, all the firepower in the universe don't mean squat if you can't pay for it. But, you already knew this, of course.
Still a cool concept though.

Gyrojet...Such an underated system, don't you think? Of course, it's only practicle higher than 13.7mm, as proven by the Japanese. And there is the issue of accuracy, which is difficult to control with any rocket propelled projectile...I've always thought it would be interesting to have a laser guided Gyrojet, an actual "magic bullet..." I think I want to design that now...damn...

Gyrojets have had a bad rap to be honest, though a lot of their accuracy issues came from bad quality control of the vents the prototypes and the ones submitted for most of the original tests were quite accurate due to their flat trajectory. Once they began to be manufactured on a larger scale however things began to go downhill.
Their major issue was the lack of any real muzzle velocity due to the need to 'spin up'(as well as the original system requiring that the projectile overcome the firing hammer to leave the barrel)This combined with the earlier Vent issues pretty much killed the weapon (not counting the cost). Combined with a kicker charge to give it an appreciable muzzle velocity and produced in low enough volume though...
...well who knows.

True, but the real disadvantage is the amount of labor and money required to make a jet that meets practical standards.
All things aside, It was a pretty kick-ass idea in my opinion.
...why do all kick ass ideas have to be so expensive...

Ah. If that's so, i have a question for you.
I see you've used gradients for shading, and they get narrower as the round's tip thins out. How did you to that?
π: 0 β©: 1
sharp-n-pointy In reply to Skariaxil [2008-09-18 22:14:16 +0000 UTC]
Well actually I use very few Gradients (well low opacity, usually on soft light layer mode which makes them fairly subtle) for the more visible highlights and cylinder effects I use the line tool (1 or 2 px thickness) and just draw it tot he shape I want then blur it till its not so hard a line. this allows the highlight to 'flow' with the subject and still be fairly easy to accomplish.

I see. I've been looking for an easy way to make gradients like that for quite a while now. Thanks^^
