Description
With the Beginners Box and Game of Armor Combat Box starter sets out on sale finally (and still available if you're in the US) it's time to get the last 3 pieces of lineart posted that rounded out that colossal project.
The commando was fairly straight forward, take an old design with good potential that just needed to be a little less flat. The main style question being how to handle that face.
Related note: If you'd like to see breakdowns on how I design mechs for Battletech, and how I direct my miniature sculptors, consider joining my Patreon. CGL is letting me post production materials there, including upcoming designs... soon. www.patreon.com/ShimmeringSword

They're both the same setting and lore, but obviously play different being tabletop vs videogame. The only reason for design separation is the different publishers.
We rarely ever work on the same thing at the same time, and the visual design process for both is rather quick, so it's extremely unlikely we'd do the same thing at the same time.

Given the nature of how things work with the IP a fight over such a thing could be quite messy and long.

So how would this fair against a Timber Wolf?

With enough cover to get in the Timber Wolf's back: pretty darn good

Uh-huh. What about an Awesome?
(Sorry, Iβm still relatively new to BattleTech)

An Awesome will have even more trouble at close range and a stealthy Commando is likely to be undeterred by both PPC and LRM loadouts at long range because it can evade the projectiles and missiles can't get a lock on him without the help of a tag laser

The Commando is a 25t light scout specialized in hit-and-runΒ .
The Timber Wolf is a 75t heavy front line Mech.
And the Timber Wolf has the unfair advantage of far superior technology (lighter internal structure and reactor, better armor, far better weaponry).
But still: a clever pilot and some cover to negate that insane range advantage the Timber Wolf has thanks to Clan Tech - the Commando could pull it off thanks to Clan Mechs of the initial assault waves into the Inner Sphere following a certain Code of Conduct which stated that you should use the smallest weapon necessary and that shooting someone in the back is kinda no-no.
The Awesome then... 80t of Inner Sphere killer.
That thing has more armor on the backside of its torso than several light Mechs on their front and enough firepower to blow a hole through those light Mechs center torso (if all shots hit there) or just blow them into bits piece by piece.
The big drawback of the Awesome is that it is slow.
So, a clever pilot utilizing his higher movement and some cover - same result as with the Timber Wolf, just takes a good deal longer due to massive slabs of armor on the Awesome's backside.
Open field? The Commando loses, no matter if being posed against one or the other.

A mech I never DID get to play with, though people have run them as group strikers against me with more success than I care to admit.Β Never underestimate a pile of SRMs and a medium laser coming at you on a fast mover!Β My best advice is usually to wipe them out with massed LRM fire before they can cripple your bigger boys.Β I like this design, and I'm glad you made the face a little less derpy than a lot of the earlier art!

It often isn't too hard to end up with "less derpy"

they do go explodey rather handily if you ammo bin them as that is basically what this variant is a walking ammo bin. I am personally more of a fan of the 1B variant with the large laser

Daggerhammer In reply to Slenka [2019-02-20 00:31:03 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, binning them was a lot of fun when I could manage it!Β As noted, I never fielded any Commandos myself, but the thought of them blitzkrieging my lines with a large laser is enough to already give me headaches...Β Time to lay out more minefields!Β Actually, now that I think back, infantry getting on them to blow their leg joints out with explosives were probably my most effective counter.

i didn't like the SRM heavy one because it required you to get a bit too close for comfort in a thing with almost no armor
π: 0 β©: 1
Daggerhammer In reply to Slenka [2019-02-20 03:07:36 +0000 UTC]
Which is fair.Β They were used against me a lot in tight quarters to heavy effect, though never without losses.Β They do tend to make up their tonnage though.Β In more open areas, I found Commandos to be annoying target practice keeping me from finishing off larger prey.Β Keeping a pack of three of them off your back can be a lot more pressing than taking long range shots at a mech all but dragging itself behind cover to die of heat!Β It's why I'm glad I never ran into one with a large laser, it would give them a lot more punch than I'm comfortable with at a bit of reach, on something that could outpace most of my preferred mechs.
Although I did once win a fight by swamping an opponent's Commandos in Fleas, hee!Β Took out a lot of his mobility and left me with a boatload of harassment units to mop up infantry and tanks without any concerns, paving the way for the big boys to slug it out.

they are a credible threat to bigger mechs as they are fast enough to flank them readily go for that juicy squishy back

I love the mechs in the Battletech universe, but I find myself missing HAWKEN's designs. They were just somehow... Cuter.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to PwnageguyXD [2019-02-20 00:04:41 +0000 UTC]
Hawken was a pretty game. Shame the devs didn't seem to care about it though. Pumped it out quick, abandoned it quicker. Maybe the visual artists who built it no longer being needed and moving on, caused the passion for it to end too.

It was mostly the incompetent management that bumbled everything, from what I've gathered. But it is a crying shame that such a beautiful game died so quickly.
Anyways, thanks for the great art!

Once again, a beautiful design.Β Your take on these mechs is exactly how I see them in my head when I'm playing with my kids or reading old novels.Β I've always been a sucker for the classic mechs of the 3025s.Β And I keep dreaming of the day when we see a re-release of 3025 or 3039 filled with your art sir.Β Thank you so much.

FASA did some nice stuff, but they also screwed up plenty, not to mention the part where they sold off the Battletech rights in all directions.
CGL has had growing pains, but they're getting it together, and I'm here to help the art and mini's side

FASA grew up before the internet and social media. And back when it was ok to be a slower paced tabletop game.Β
They just didn't know how to grow with the changing times. And got caught up in the dot com bust.Β
