TRO 3145 Marik went on PDF release recently, this time instead of handling the cover work I jumped in on some interior work. Painting is my specialty, but the interior lineart assignments are the only way to design the mechs, so it was nice to have my turn at that.First up is the 55 ton Quasimodo, an offshoot of the Hunchback. With decent speed and jump jets it's quite mobile while it's battery of VSP lasers and triple strength myomers make it a deadly infighter. It's particularly specialized in taking on Particle Cannon carriers though, as it mounts a Blue Shield system. Pew pew.

I use a 3D base model to get the pose and perspective right, but what you see here is freehand inking in photoshop with some help from line tools. Huda is the only official artist that uses 3D renders as final art.

What I love about Battletech art is that the B&W images like this one are often as appealing as the coloured ones. Not sure why, it might be the detail put into them and how clean they look, but I just don't know. Well done as always.

I think when you're looking at battletech art you look past the medium a bit and more into the design itself, there are bad paintings and bad inked pieces too

Oh I know there are, but I should have specified that I was talking about more official art. I guess it just shows how much thought the artists put into their designs. Do you already know what these mechs look like before you draw them?

Well, there is reference and inspiration, such as this mechs Hunchback roots, and from there it's onto imagination. I also sketch out the design to get the forms right before moving onto a final pose and inking.

So THAT'S why I liked it, it's an offshoot of the hunchie. One of my fav's, I have three in MWO. It's a decent game by my standards, but this could be cool to have.

I like the Hunch too, but in MWO, his hitboxes are awefully large, making hitting it rather easy. My sider torso was often destroyed on first engagement, leaving my behind with less then half the weapons.

In any event, it's actually a pretty cool design. Normally I can't stand the Battletech aesthetic, but your Quasimodo is pretty spiffy. Pew pew!

I used a similar process to how I paint, where I start with a basic 3D model to set my pose and perspective. From there I inked it in photoshop. There's not a whole lot of freehand work in there, but it's till inking rather than 3D render.

Very good rendering of this mech. The thing that made me really like this machine is the fact that PEW is written on the side of each laser. Its a small thing but it adds a personal touch to the mech.
