Yes it's true, new monthly tutorials are now available via my Patreon

Finally, that coloring tutorial I was supposed to get around to and didn't until now. This is the same sort of coloring I use as a base for my NoSelfControl art. For the record, the art in this tutorial was entirely colored in Photoshop CS, but will work for any type of Photoshop or program employing layers. Also all my post-drawing work is done with a mouse, so mostly anyone can do this sort of coloring if they want. Also note that you can go a lot further with this "style" if you want, its a good launch point for more complex coloring.

Hope this is helpful to someone!

I wrote this back when I was still using 5.5, so you're good XD

The principle is to hilight the darkness by adding a bit of light. If your dark isn't dark enough, then the contrast won't be noticeable. Look at the example in the tutorial, you can see what the difference is between just the shading, and the shading with the dodge added to it. That is kind of the idea that I'm going for. The effect can also depend on whether or not your background clashes, or if the area you're lightening is too large/ small/ covered by lines or texture.

I was looking through DA for a good digital art tutorial, but all of the ones I found were too complicated for me.. I think i'm going to stick with this tutorial until I learn how to paint IRL... It's really helpful to have an understandable tutorial around...

Wait, I think I commented on this before....
Oh well. ;D

When you do the dodge part, do you use a gradient? And if so, how exactly? It doesn't look like you used dodge with a brush

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shingworks In reply to rashaka [2009-02-18 16:22:03 +0000 UTC]

I did use the dodge with a brush, actually... its just a very fuzzy brush. If you turn the "hardness" of the brush all the way to the other side you will see what I mean!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rashaka In reply to shingworks [2009-02-19 06:10:58 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I get it. I guess you just need to make the brush wide enough to over the intended area.

THANK YOU, YOU HAVE SAVED MY BUTT FROM GROWING INTO MY CHAIR FROM THE HOURS OF SITTAGE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT COLORING D8

shingworks In reply to persimmon [2009-01-05 17:58:24 +0000 UTC]

lol well I dunno if this is a good one, but it is a tutorial XD Another tip that I didn't put here is to choose one shade color (like dark purple) and set a new layer on top of your flats that is just for shading. Then set that layer to like overlay or linear burn and turn down the opacity hella. Then your shadows are all consistent in tone but different depending on what the color on the base layer is! Saves a ton of time so you don't have to keep picking new colors.

I just figured that out myself a few weeks ago! It's like the equivalent of eating delicious cookies. But with drawing. ...yeah.

Uh, I'm having a hard time deciphering the fourth step, but I'm going to look at the comments and also experiment myself to see if I can figure it out-- but just in case no one mentioned it, I um. Mentioned it.

Your tutorials are radtastic, but you knew that.

Haha, well its a step I learned from... uh I can't remember his DA name XC Ah well, just fiddle with the layer options, I'm sure you'll get what I'm talking about once you start button mashing!
