Yes it's true, new monthly tutorials are now available via my Patreon

Finally, that coloring tutorial I was supposed to get around to and didn't until now. This is the same sort of coloring I use as a base for my NoSelfControl art. For the record, the art in this tutorial was entirely colored in Photoshop CS, but will work for any type of Photoshop or program employing layers. Also all my post-drawing work is done with a mouse, so mostly anyone can do this sort of coloring if they want. Also note that you can go a lot further with this "style" if you want, its a good launch point for more complex coloring.

Hope this is helpful to someone!

So, for the Dodge and Burn tools, what setting do you use? Shadows, Midtones, or Highlights?

shingworks In reply to Synicalsel [2006-12-25 04:11:08 +0000 UTC]

It probably depends on your own tastes, but I prefer hilights because it gives a really striking comic-book feel to it

Hmm, might just be my confused old self, but "On the shade layers, use the dodge tool on the darkest part"? I thought Dodge lightens and Burn darkens...? Or maybe you do mean --

Okay, I'm not sure. But anyway, great tutorial and great style that's easier than it looks.

shingworks In reply to aneesah [2006-12-23 19:59:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, dodge does lighten, but if you use it on the part of the shaded object that is meant to be darkest (the part in deepest shadow) it makes it stand out more. Sort of confusing, but if you try it out you'll see what I mean!

I'm still a little confused by what you mean here, myself. @_@

shingworks In reply to zodiacspothole [2011-11-21 09:04:35 +0000 UTC]

Haha, sure, which part? Maybe I can clarify

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zodiacspothole In reply to shingworks [2011-11-21 09:47:59 +0000 UTC]

I'm unsure as to what you meant about using the Dodge tool on the darkest shadows, and the reason why. Same thing about using Burn where the shade layer interfaces with the base color. I'm not quite getting what doing this is meant to convey, or why it is being done.

shingworks In reply to zodiacspothole [2011-11-21 16:12:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sure. So actually, I wrote this back when I was using color like an idiot without knowing what I was doing, so you don't need to apply the effect "just because," though it is cool to experiment. So you have these in cel shading:
- flats
- shades
on different layers. But we want to take it a step further. If you're using dodge and burn to add some interest, I use a mix of these options:
- use dodge on the flat layer
- use burn on the flat layer
- use dodge on the shade layer
- use burn on the shade layer
Here, I advocate using a burn and dodge on the shade layer in specific places. When you put the burn (darken) on the area next to the flats (the light part), you create contrast that will make your eye look at it. If you lighten the darker areas of the shade layer, you'll be creating a false contrast there as well that draws your eye to it. The overall effect is to create a drawing where the shading is in high contrast, which is good for things like bright daylight when someone is standing in shadow.

What I didn't realize at the time of doing this tutorial is that isn't ~the~ way to color, just one way. You can also add dodge to the area next to the flats to make the color more similar to the flat layer, that will make your character look like they are standing in bright light. If you dodge the flats to make them look like the shade layer, that will make your character look like they are in shadow. Burning everything to a lower shade/ low contrast (compared to the high contrast version) makes them look like they are in a night scene, or standing in an unlit room.

So yeah, there are a lot of options! They all spring from using dodge and burn on either your flats or your shade layers. The really best way to learn is just to get a file and start playing around, it's way easier to learn this stuff by practicing than it is by reading a giant essay I wrote XD

Wow, thanks for the in depth answer! I think it makes more sense to me now that you have explained it further. I'll have to give it a try, in the net few things I draw. I'm always looking for ways to improve my coloring, to make it look more interesting. Experimenting is definitely a great learning method, but I think lots of people also NEED giant essays to help them understand the WHY of what they are doing, so I'm glad you put these things out there!
