Description I've been meaning to put this together for the past few months, and so I whipped it up tonight since I'm finally out of school and with significantly less responsibilities... Well, at least for the time being.

The point of this tutorial is doing coloured scannedΒ lineart, not just colouring lines that you've inked digitally. Β If you ink digitally the lines are already separated on their own layer, sure, but with scanned lineart you need to mask out the white areas while still maintaining the fidelity of the original edges- that's where layer masks come in. Β You could apply this mask and lock the layer transparency too, but this is laying out the steps you need to get there in the first place.

Hi!

I could swear I've gotten this to work before, but if I copy and paste my lineart, I find that Photoshop really wants to create a new layer for the lineart. It doesn't actually let me paste into the layer mask. I can try to merge layers down, but that doesn't give me results like yours. Would you know if there's a way around this?

Thanks!

you need to make sure you're in the layer mask when you paste, not in the layer itself- that's the one way that I can imagine it might not work.

Thanks! And that's exactly what I wasn't seeing, I spotted your little auxilliary tutorial page and made extra sure to actually click *into the mask*, and it worked like a charm!

Thank you, again, for posting about this method. I do all my inks traditionally for the time being and this is exactly what I was looking for!

I was just wondering - in one of your videos (Cinderella) you "turn off the color" for shading and then they reappear as different shades. I was wondering how you went about this? is it just a layer mod or do you go in and colorize it in hue/sat? or something else? just curious as I'm trying to test out different methods and see what works for me. Thank!

Love your work. It's beautiful, fresh and exciting. So glad I found you!

Scratch my last question; new question. What do you mean by "image proper"?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shoomlah In reply to toastwithjam20 [2012-07-01 02:48:08 +0000 UTC]

I think you're reading way too literally into my phrasing- it just means clicking on the image: "proper (adj.) 6: strictly limited to a specified thing, place, or idea "

I'm sorry, but there are thousands of photoshop tutorials on the internet, not to mention a ton of them on DeviantArt alone, and I'm pretty swamped- I can't answer questions about tutorials I wrote five years ago, I'm just trying to point you in the right direction!

i found out what was wrong; my line layer, i locked it to a white layer earlier on in my process, so i was no longer able to see the other layers underneath it.The white blocked out all color. Hopefully that makes sense to you now, i suck at explaining things. Anyhow, GOOD LUCK on your work.

toastwithjam20 [2012-06-30 05:04:32 +0000 UTC]

So, I followed your process and got to the part where I have the new, black layer and the copied "white" line art, only it's not white, it's showing the checkered board, "there's nothing here" pattern; and it's adjoining layer mask with the white bg and black line art. When I color on the BLACK LAYER, it doesn't stay in the lines, and when i color on the WHITE LAYER, it's not the color i selected, it's a grey tone instead. What am I not doing correctly?

Right, so do you have any ideas for making this work in Gimp? I can get as far as pasting the line art into the layer mask, but that's where the two programs diverge.

I've gotten to the white lineart/black background for this, but I can't change the lineart colour! What am I doing wrong, or is there a different technique for Photoshop 8.0?

Puppy-eater In reply to Puppy-eater [2011-08-28 11:31:15 +0000 UTC]

Okay, now I can fill in the lineart, however it's only working in shades of grey.

May I give you 100 thousand kisses for this!
I always put the color-layer on top and put it on multiply, but it got difficult if I wanted different colorlayers on top of each other... I NEVER came to the idea to put the line-layer on top and put it on multiply! GHKSFΓ–JSDFKLI'M SO DUMB

Ok, quick question: I just watched one of your videos on the making of the historical Cinderella. Your lines are so smooth! Are they smooth because you've had a lot of practice, or is it your equipment, or a mixture of both? I seem to have so much control with pen and paper, but I can't seem to get the same amount of control with a tablet. Do you have any tips on getting smoother lines?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shoomlah In reply to Art-of-KaitlinMills [2011-06-01 16:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Lots of long sweeping lines, and I use a Cintiq 21ux. Granted, my lines didn't get amazingly smoother when I started using it, but it does make the process far easier.

How exactly do you soften lineart? Whenever I outline my sketch, it appears very rough; the lines, I mean.

shoomlah In reply to MOONVAMP0101 [2011-05-02 07:00:10 +0000 UTC]

Just lots of practice and getting the right supplies- the piece for this tutorial was done with a ballpoint pen which gives you more control than other ink pens.

I'm sure your tutorial could help me a lot, but unfortunately I don't get it at all I don't understand what you're doing... (I'd understand it a lot more with more screencaps explaining everything)
no need to reply to, but it's just that I think your tutorial's very helpful but...
I'm a low mind who always needs very picky examples (does "picky" even exists ???!)

I use the exact terminology from photoshop and include screencaptures- it's sort of hard to explain beyond that.
