Yes it's true, new monthly tutorials are now available via my Patreon
>>>>> Get new tutorials and feed an overworked artist here <<<<<

Finally, the male anatomy counterpart to the ladies tutorial from a month or two ago

I decided not to address the male genitalia this time around... one reason being cuz I don't think they are drawn as often as the female parts, and secondly because I suck at them XD I won't link directly but if you click here you can find a separate link to another tutorial that I found interesting on a non-DA art site.

Oh yeah, sorry the colors are hellla ugly. I was feeling uninspired.

Thats it I guess... again, feel free to ref, copy or trace any of this, its all free for you to use. Hope someone gets some use out of it

Body hair? Ehh, most men don't have that, the ones who do are usually middle eastern or caucasian.

Here in North korea we are smooth, and the women prefer it.(Only gay men like teh body hair.)

To be technical, we all have it And preference varies as wildly as phenotype.

That's true, but you claim that the bicep doesn't have body hair when it does, so clearly you mean thick noticeable body hair. Not sure if you're aware of this, but men of african and especially asian descent aren't hairy.. Making the whole body hair comment a bit close minded. (And no, it isn't related to testosterone.)

It sure does, however, body hair is about as high as obesity on the scale of attractive traits.

Again, kind of depends. Also, as you probably noted if you've read any of my tutorials, all the info here is a general guide and not meant to be taken as 100% accurate for all people of all races or body types. If you're drawing a character with alopecia, or who is prepubescent, or just not very hairy, you wouldn't need to worry about drawing visible body hair.

And for the record yes there are some hairy asian men out there. Not predominately but, you know, they exist. Come to SF in the late summer and you'll see all varieties of male body hair pattern just from walking around.

Yes but you labelled it as if having body hair = testosterone. The fact that blacks have less of the former and more of the latter kind of contradicts that. Or if you're drawing a character who belongs to one of the most populous races in the world..yeah. I get it, but still, to me it just sounds like a really hairy man or a girl/gay who likes hairy men glorifying something that most people find unattractive.

Yeah but the ones that are hairless aren't hairless because of their testosterone, they are because we are humans, and don't have need for body hair, and it's being evolved out because it's ugly and pointless. Anyhow, I know some people like "bears", I just found the body hair bit pointlessly condescending, and inaccurate.

I don't know about body hair being pointless, it probably has a purpose for people who are from certain regions of the world where they've evolved that way because it was an important adaption for survival. It's probably kind of like skin tone/color; people from places like Africa and the Middle-East have darker skin because it helps protect their skin from the sun while people from the places like Europe have lighter skin to absorb more vitamins from the sun.

My best guess is that body hair is designed to help keep the body warm, which would make sense that Europeans are more likely to have more body hair because Europe is colder and it helps keep them warm. Why men generally have more body hair then women I don't know; it might be because men are more likely to be directly exposed to the cold weather, especially in the past. Though even women from Europe/European descent have a decent amount of body hair; I'm mostly of European descent and I have a fair amount of body hair on my arms and legs. My guess is this is probably the same reason why European men generally have more facial hair or at least are more likely to grow it out because it keeps their face warm. Men from Africa and Asia are probably less likely to have as much body hair because it's hot there and it would cause overheating. This is just a theory, I'm sure there's a good reason some men have more body hair than others but I don't know for sure what it is.

As for finding body hair attractive, it's probably due to what someone is used to. People that are used to seeing hairier men are most likely to find it more attractive than people who are used to seeing men with less body hair. So people who are generally used to seeing men from Europe/European descent are generally going to be used to men with more body hair and so are most likely going to find it more attractive. You probably think body hair is unattractive because you're from North Korea and you're not used to seeing men with body hair. Of course, there's personal preference too, some people are going to find something attractive that other people are going to find unattractive. No offense or anything, I just wanted to explain that body hair is often considered attractive in other places of the world.

ImmaculateReprobate In reply to rababco [2013-08-19 17:47:59 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't saying it never had a point, I'm saying it's pointless now.

Asia isn't hot, some of China is because it's a massive country, but NK, Mongolia, A lot of China, and Japan, are not what I'd consider hot countries. Caucasian features also evolved before Europeans, they evolved in the caucasus region, which is much hotter than where the NEAs live.

I'm a Norweigan Canadian, chances are I'm hairier than you lol. My experiences are entirely in the western world, and the western world is not a big fan of profuse body hair. And actually, most asian men have body hair, on their legs, a bit on the arms, armpits, and sometimes a line of hair on their abdomen(.Β upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… Number 4 appears on the majority of Caucasians and a lot of Africans.Β

All that aside, I wasn't being serious lol, I mean..the North Korean thing should have given it away. North Koreans live under rule of a dictatorship and I'm doubtful that many or any of them have access to the internet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rababco In reply to ImmaculateReprobate [2013-08-19 19:18:53 +0000 UTC]

I was a bit confused about the whole North Korean comment I was like "do they even have in North Korea?", I didn't get you were joking. Men are usually are hairier than women, I'm not sure why that's just the way it is. I'm not really all that hairy, I was just saying that despite being a woman I have fairly noticeable hair on my arms and legs, it isn't real thick or anything but it's there, I just kind of wondered if other women from non-Caucasian descent have less hair on their arms and legs (I live in Michigan, which is close to Canada and can also get pretty cold in the winter but still can get pretty hot in the summer sometimes, Michigan's known for it's unpredictable weather.)

The Western part of the world doesn't find profuse body hair on men attractive but men with a descent amount of body hair is generally considered attractive and "manly" (at least for men of European descent, think a Lumberjack) we generally don't like "bears". The amount of body hair is actually important to keep in mind because, like you said often depends on the man's race/ethnicity/heritage, if the man is Caucasian/European/Middle-Eastern descent than he's more likely to have body hair than if he's of African or Asian descent. So people should keep in mind if they're male character is Asian or African he's probably not going to have much body hair.

Well, I also have native american heritage, and my father(Half native) said I was hairy like a white man, he has no chest/arm/leg hair. I also recall my grandmother saying that white women had hair under their armpits, on the legs and forearms(And upper lips) that they bleach/shave. My girlfriend is native and she grows a bit on her legs(But she may be also mixed.) I don't think Asian and especially Native Americans have body hair.

True, but even the most "manly" of actors/celebrities have waaay less body hair than most of your average Caucasian males.Β upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… Β Going by this, despite 50+% of Caucasian males having #4, most "manly" celebs have 2 or 3 at the most.(And a very trim version at that.) Yeah, in terms of character design there is difference in ethnicity, I imagine in terms of hairyness it would be Caucasians, Africans, Asians, then Native Americans.

Still can't believe I'm having a real conversation about an otherwise troll topic..lol.

shingworks In reply to ImmaculateReprobate [2013-06-19 16:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Hm, well, the glorification part is a matter of opinion I guess. I pointed it out because, at the time (and quite often still) I tend to see artists skipping over body hair completely. I find it baffling from a character design standpoint, especially if you're portraying members of a race that is naturally swarthy, or something.

And yes, obviously all people have hormones and testosterone is not the reason you have hair. A separate point is that a higher proportion of t in one's system can lead to increased hair growth, you can verify that yourself. Genetics is obviously the major factor to your overall hair distribution. Anyhow, I'm not sure why we're still talking about this since this tutorial is obviously meant to be a broad overview of drawing masculine figures and not a textbook on your endocrine system. If you think it's condescending for me to say something like "most adult men have secondary sex characteristics" and point out that hair is one of those, then that kind of sounds like a personal issue that you need to work out for yourself.

Anyways I'm a little tired of explaining this, I think we both know this is splitting hairs. If you don't find the tutorial helpful you are more than welcome to not use it/ ignore it/ deride it on your own time and in your own space as you see fit. Good luck with your art

ImmaculateReprobate In reply to shingworks [2013-06-19 19:53:21 +0000 UTC]

I think that's a matter of aesthetics, I don't see many greek statues with profuse body hair despite the fact that they should have it. It's ideals over realism.(And shaving is not impossible.)Remember, Caucasian women also grow body hair on their arms/legs, but I rarely see that in tutorials. On that subject, where's the mention of ass/back hair? Why leave that out? :3

No, I think it's condescending for you to say something like "Before you run off and design your hairless bishie wonder boy, remember that most adult men have this crazy thing called testosterone, AKA secondary sex characteristics. As you can see, it makes the same point, but with unnecessary condescension. Nice assumption, however, I'm a hairy beast, and I can't imagine what personal issues you imagine I have, but what I pointed out is blatantly condescending, more so to artists then smooth skins, but still.

Splitting hairs????? lol, c'mon... It's a tutorial, tons of people use it, it made a broad assertion that frankly isn't true, I'm free to critique it and defend my critique am I not? The don't use, don't look is a bit of an immature way of dealing with it; is your comment's section for praise only??

What is wrong with you? Are you offended by this tutorial or something? Most men DO have body hair, thats all he's saying. This is a tutorial, not a pick at people that don't have body hair. And you claimed that the artist is being 'close-minded', the only person being close minded here is you - 'only gay people find body hair attractive' well that's just rediculous. And you said 'most men don't have body hair unless you're caucasian or middle-eastern'. I'm sorry but 'most men'Β isn't the population of where you live, you're just being biased. To be honest I think you were simply offended by this tutorial, but that gives you no right to give the artist hate for it. They were putting this up to be helpful, and I think it was.

Nope, my comment section is for me to talk to people who aren't obviously trying to pick a fight. You are more than free to disagree or dislike anything you see here. My issue now is that, while I see a ton of stuff I disagree with on the internet every day; 99.9% of the time I don't feel compelled to talk down the person who wrote it. I get the feeling you're trying to make me apologize to you for this tutorial or something, or make excuses or something, which I'm not going to do. Again, it reflects strongly on you that you've got something to prove that you keep coming back to this. Anyways, I'm not really getting anything out of talking to you so have a good one and keep drawing.

ImmaculateReprobate In reply to shingworks [2013-06-20 03:52:26 +0000 UTC]

You think I was talking down to you? I didn't say anything that was more or less condescending than anything in the tutorial. I didn't say anything directed towards you as a person at all, until the attempt at a personal attack. before that we were talking about body hair and testosterone.

Apologize? No, I've said my peace, I respond when I disagree with what's said, and even more likely if it's something directed at me personally. On the contrary, you've made a lot of excuses already.

Nice assumption, again, no, I've got nothing to prove here, in fact, my original comment was a joke.(Intuitively obvious to the most casual observer.) No? I was hoping you would come away with the knowledge that your assertion about body hair is inaccurate. Then again, being a 12 year old Indonesian boy, I imagine you were already somewhat familiar with asian male body hair thickness.

question! how do you draw a bend abdomen?
like when people bend down to pick up things or doing warm up sitting as they try to reach for their feet.
i have less difficulty drawing the front view but i cant get 3/4 and side view to look right orz

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shingworks In reply to Catrojan [2013-06-07 04:35:04 +0000 UTC]

What helps is looking at the spine, and looking at the ribcage and pelvis. The spine bends a bit as you probably know. It's like a bendy stick that has some give (but can't be folded in half or something nuts like that). The ribcage, however, does NOT bend. It's a big lump. Your pelvis also does not bend. If you draw the basic placement of those two objects, you can see where the crease of your abdomen will be. It will likely be a little bit below the ribcage (you do have some skin and fat in the way as padding, after all. If you're heavier you will have even more). Try drawing the ribs and pelvis from the side. That's pretty easy to google. Then draw some skin on top. Don't forget there are organs inside the "blank" part (your intestines, liver, etc), but those are smushy and can move a little bit. Just don't leave them out or you get creepy wasp waist, haha. Anyways, try that out and see if that helps!

shingworks In reply to Catrojan [2013-06-11 06:01:53 +0000 UTC]

I'll be honest... these look really good to me. Your notes and questions are great! But at some point, the details like length and relative curviness or straightness is going to depend on the specific body you're drawing. Everyone's proportions are a little different (some people have long torsos, some people have big bellies, etc etc) but all your sketches definitely fall within acceptable ranges. If you want to go for exact rendering, I'd suggest trying still life studies (you can probably find some nearby if you live close to a big town or university, if you're not already in art school) or doing mastercopies of paintings by classical artists. Or if you want to try to learn more realistic variation, again, still-life studies of models or working from photos from the internet like stock sites would be great. But seriously these are looking fine.

The only small crit I can make is maybe don't shy away from the genitals because there are some parts (like on the top pic) where drawing a big oval near the bottom might prevent you from learning the correct position, but that's not super necessary yet if you're just working on abs. You could also work on foreshortening a little bit more like on the second pic with the leg raised, but again that wasn't related to abs necessarily so maybe that was just a quick approximation on your side. Either way, nice work.
