Description
Here be a finished tutorial! For a long time I wanted to do a tutorial on bats... and little by little I've been getting more motivation to do so every time I saw a incorrect bat. IT WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY.SO, if you're wanting to have a bat character (WHO IS COMPLETELY A BAT. NO HYBRIDS AND WHATNOT) then please draw the bat correctly. Look at references. Don't just guess. AND DON'T DRAW CANID PARTS ON A BAT. GRAAAAAAAHHHHH.
I also think I'ma keep the bat character I made up at the bottom. :'D I LOVE Lesser False Vampire Bats. They are so cute. <3
The photo is thanks to , and the original is here: [link]

A very helpful tutorial, and I'm sure it will help if I ever do get round to drawing an anthro bat. However, telling people what not to do in red seemed a bit extreme to me.
I didn't know about the wing vein, so I'm going to try and remember that.

It's not extreme when you're wanting a 100% bat.

Thanks for the tips! I think I want to go try to draw a mouse-tailed bat now.

Amazing tutorial!
That "wing vein" was a thing I've learned today.
I usually base dragonwings a bit on bats even if I sometimes skip the membrane between the thumb and shoulder.
Bat feets are way cooler than paws.
I've tried to draw a bat anthro for an arttrade it worked fine due to being a mix even if some anatomy ended up strangely but that's quite common for me anyway.
I think I'm somewhere between palm and "bony lump" in how to attach the "wingfingers".
What is your oppinion on "elbow spikes" on winged things?
I really like your OC Pierce for some reason. Perhaps it's the fact that he does have actual genitals that just are there and not in your face. That's hard to accomplish.

Glad it's helpful!
I say hand-looks or the bony lumps work. xD
I do not like elbow spikes. They look ugly.
Thank you~ I try to make Pierce as realistic and animalistic as I can with also having him still have a "human" side to him. :3

Like this one: [link] . I realised that I need to draw more, especially wings if my OC Skimmervinge gets to decide.
I do not like elbow spikes either. It looks like they do not support the wing and the bending of the wing would be impossible or difficult.

This is great! It is so helpful! Something else I've been trying to find though, is how a real life bat walks on all fours. Like what part of the wing it walks on, how it holds its thumb, how its ankles and feet move. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough.

..People put fox tails on bats? That I have never seen. Hilarious.
I'm shocked at the large number of artists who don't just use google to fact check. It's so freaking easy to find reference for even rare animals these days.

why do people ALWAYS draw animals with canine characteristics?? what the fu. this tutorial is very helpfull though! you got the anatomy of the bat very well

I really dunno. :C Must be because they are so used to seeing canines that they think other species have canine parts. NOOOO.
But thanks!

Thanks for this! It's helpful! I have a nitpick though... A lot of people draw incorrectly "palms" where the wrist joint ends, but the palm bones (hand bones / metacarpals) are actually the first "section" of the wing. Here is a good image for comparison: [link]

shortybat In reply to james-talon [2013-02-25 14:35:10 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it gets confusing cuz it looks like it's just a lump of bones. xD But yes yer correct.
THOUGH THE BAT FACE ON THAT LINK BUGS ME. DOG NOOOOOOSSSSSEEEE. BAAAAH. They should at least get everything right. >8C People need to stop putting canid features on bats, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE TRYING TO GIVE INFO ABOUT BATS. THE VISUAL WILL CONFUSE PEOPLE. AUUUUUGH. /mini rant

james-talon In reply to shortybat [2013-02-25 21:53:31 +0000 UTC]
Yes, bad ref on the face, but the point I was making is too many people draw "hands" in the wing. That just doesn't make sense logistically since there isn't any need for a palm when they need to utilize those sturdier bones for support while flying. I have noticed that even experienced dragon artists on dA still like to draw palms there... so since this is a tutorial on that kind of anatomy I think it would greatly help to mention that in here

Hmm, ya know, I've never thought about it. I do palms on my wings because of the looks and thinking it would add strength to larger wings. @_@ Bwah, I may change this on my own characters now.

Forgot to add: This is because it's the most stable of the bones in the hand, so they're the longest and most durable in the wing.

This is a wonderful tutorial for those looking to portray bats accurately or scientifically, and a wonderful reference for those looking to catch up of realistic bat anatomy- and I'm not saying those who draw stylized bats should not look to the real thing for guidance- but this is problematic because you put forward only one way to draw the creatures and sound very controlling. You should encourage your viewers to experiment and be original as well as conscious of the real thing.

shortybat In reply to Katweet [2013-02-25 14:45:54 +0000 UTC]
If people think I am only showing this in one way, or not creative enough to make it into their own style, that doesn't mean I'm being "controlling".
Did you read the whole thing, too? I mentioned how things can be simplistic as long as they still have their actual parts, and I mentioned how parts of the character can change to fit the character (like what I did with the tail membranes and the "hands").
The point of this tutorial is to show that bat's do not have canid features, and that if anyone wants to draw a 100% bat they need to make sure they don't add parts from other animals onto the bat.
I didn't say anything against drawing a cartoony bat or anything else outside of the realistic style. You can be VERY creative with just using the realistic parts of a bat.
Examples:
shorty, my main character, is made of two bats: [link] (The hoary bat and the proboscis bat). Some things still need to be fixed on her, but she generally follows both of the types of bats.
And then I also said how they can make the bat a hybrid with something else to give it the parts they want.
Example of what I have done: [link] (she is an Egyptian Fruit bat mixed with an elk, and then I played with the colors).
So I am in no way saying that the only way to draw a bat is if you make it super detailed like the original bat. Make it to your style, but just don't change up the body parts if it's a full bat!
This tutorial IS about drawing the right parts. That's all this drawing is. :/ That's not being controlling.
