UPDATE July 2011:If you're a Watership Down fan, you should check out this site:
[link]
It's a small discussion board for WD fans. Not too many members at the moment, but the fandom is very old after all; older fandoms don't tend to be as active as new ones.
Anyways, I've never before managed to stumble on a Watership Down discussion board, so I decided to join the moment I saw the site. Would love to see more new people over there!

OLD DESCRIPTION:
Aww crap. Something messed up with the submitting process. Well, let's try it again.
Watership Down characters, part 1/6: main cast.
I posted these in my Livejournal already, but I'll post them here too.
I did some cosmetic changes to the pictures, though; changed some details that bothered me.
Watching the Watership Down TV series, I got inspired to try to draw all the rabbits in it. I'm also a fan of the Watership Down movie which was done in 1978. The movie has a more realistic style and the series is more cartoony. Also, the first two seasons of the TV series have a consistent style, but in the third season the character designs of all the characters were changed drastically. I wanted to draw all possible designs for all the rabbits: the movie version, series1&2 design and series3 design.
So, in this picture, there's always three versions of the same bunny: the first image is the character's design from the Watership Down movie, the second one's the bunny's design from the first two seasons of the WSD TV series, and the third image is the design from season 3 of the series.
This is image 1/6, and it's featuring the main cast from the movie and the series.

I can't stand how the TV series changed Blackberry into a doe, and to be honest I have a lot of problems with the TV series. The book and film alone display the true story of Watership Down (though I can't speak for the upcoming 3D series yet) in my opinion.

With the new Watership Down series coming out later, this will need to be updated.
Anyway, what I don't get with the series is that they went as far to change the eye color. I can go with fur pattern changes, as long as the character is still recognizable, but why change the eyes?

There's another Watership Down Series. I just recently learned that there was a show about it. And there's a more newer show and an upcoming one. The next I know is that they made series of Plague Dogs.

Wha...really? I was only aware of three Watership Down media, the movie, the 90s animated series, and the upcoming 3D one.

Oh I was looking at the changes in the characters here and I thought there was 3 different medias and then an upcoming one But now that you mentioned it, I think there's only the ones you just mentioned.

They turned Blackberry into a doe/female because of the lack of does in both novel and book.

just for the sake of political correctness, but I'm like "what, can't you just create a new female instead?"

Well, in the original one, thats the whole point for the rest of the movie, so if they DID have does in the first place and violet didn't die, the movie probably would've just ended once they found the beech tree on the hill..

Huh...
It seems like some of the characters aged between their Season 1/2 and Season 3 versions.
Bigwig goes from "Childhood uncle" to a Grandpa-bunny look,
Fiver looks like he went from a Juvenile rabbit to a full-grown rabbit,
Hazel seems to have darkened a bit, like a person who's aged well.
Just something I've noticed. I honestly thought these were taken from the actual show/movie! Very well drawn!

i'm just gonna dismiss the entire third row because I hated the designs of the characters in Season 3
Β
I actually think both film and TV show hit their characters exactly.
The film,Β aimedΒ towards older audiences,Β provided characters who were realistic,
e.g. Bigwig being a typical chief-of-police type guy, Hazel's leadership skills yet his unsure edge that we occasionally glimpsed.
The designsΒ are realistic rabbit designs, and because it's an older audience, thisΒ is more satisfactory and the viewers are able to identify the significant features of each character and remember the easier than children.
Β
The TV show, aimed for kids, provided characters that were stretched, and dramatic.
Their personalities were fairly un-relatable e.g. Bigwig's MAJOR moodswings, and I have NEVER met any kid anything like Pipkin.
The characters are stereotypical, but it works because the younger audience can identify and enjoy them easier.
Their designs are very unrealistic. They look like all different breeds of rabbit, some even look like completely other animals. But once againΒ it made them easier to identify.
Β
So, I prefer the movie, but I think the only reason for this is because I grew out of the TV show and began to find the more relatable and realistic characters more interesting than the characters who just couldn't be real.
Β
And that is my long winded opinion

Ia agree with almost all of this post but... what kind of 'other animal' the series designs look like?Β Sure they wanted to make them quite distinct from each other and hence had to take more liberty witht he designs , but all look like rabbits to me?

StarTheWolfPuppy In reply to Nukilik [2013-11-25 16:34:10 +0000 UTC]
I think ((personally)) that some of them could be confused for dogs or something at first glance.
Β
Once you have got a proper look, it's clear, I agree, but when I first saw them after YEARS of not watching the show, I thought they were some kind of canine xD
it might just be me
