It's a small discussion board for WD fans. Not too many members at the moment, but the fandom is very old after all; older fandoms don't tend to be as active as new ones.
Anyways, I've never before managed to stumble on a Watership Down discussion board, so I decided to join the moment I saw the site. Would love to see more new people over there!

Watership Down characters, part 1/6: main cast.
I posted these in my Livejournal already, but I'll post them here too.
I did some cosmetic changes to the pictures, though; changed some details that bothered me.
Watching the Watership Down TV series, I got inspired to try to draw all the rabbits in it. I'm also a fan of the Watership Down movie which was done in 1978. The movie has a more realistic style and the series is more cartoony. Also, the first two seasons of the TV series have a consistent style, but in the third season the character designs of all the characters were changed drastically. I wanted to draw all possible designs for all the rabbits: the movie version, series1&2 design and series3 design.
So, in this picture, there's always three versions of the same bunny: the first image is the character's design from the Watership Down movie, the second one's the bunny's design from the first two seasons of the WSD TV series, and the third image is the design from season 3 of the series.
This is image 1/6, and it's featuring the main cast from the movie and the series.

I prefer the designs of the series, because apart from anything else, it's much easier to tell who's who.

I love the plot and edginess of the novel and film, but I love the character designs of the tv show (though I think they went a little overboard with Bigwig's design, and it's a little wierd that Blackberry is a doe).
There ought to be a remake of Watership Down (the film) in the future, with the same plot and edginess of the film, but with the 'cartoony' character designs of the tv show, or something similar (though it doesn't need to have all the blood and gore from the film). Kind of like The Lion King.

Hi, I know this post is super old but I just wanted to say that I agree with your points. I'm currently watching the tv show and it's pretty good. I love the first two season designs but only a few of the season three designs (Bigwig, Woundwort).
And a bit of news, the BBC are planning a remake of Watership Down. It's supposed to in CGI. Other than that, there's very little information to go on.

I like what you did here and I guess I'll just come out and say it: I did not like the cartoon series. I know what they were trying to do, make it lighter and softer but that doesn't work for Watership Down. The movie and the book were awesome, I read and saw each like three times already and loved every minute of both. True masterpeices both book and movie. I will say though the first season character designs were ok but the season three's sucked.
Also Blackberry seemed to lose some of his smarts when they turned him female. O.o

I guess the reason why the characters went through drastic changes was to symbolize aging in the 3rd season? I'm not sure, I haven't watched the cartoon version yet...

well in the original movie the only doe was Violet who got killed and eatten by a hawk, so they had to replace Violet somehow

The original is the best. Seriously, on the more "child based" ones they made Blackberry a female! That completely eliminates half of the journey! Damn producers...

These are magical Bunnys, they change they eye-color in the third season! Wonderfull Work, i loved this Show when i was a Kid! But i'm missing the Black Bunny of death in your work...

What I think about season 3...
They didn't do too bad with Hazel...
Fiver, the only real difference is that his eyes magically change colour in season 3 compared to season 1/2. Wtf?
If they'd added any more fur to Bigwig, he'd look like a bloody lamb o_o
What the hell did they do to Dandelion in season 3?
Blackberry...The series was never nice to you in the first place. But I can't bear to look at season 3 Blackberry.
...They made Pipkin ugly, damn it. In season 3, I mean.
