Description
Large file, may take a little bit to load.At popular request, here is how I create my character images! Yes, it takes some time, but I feel the outcome is worth it.
At the last step, I usually resize to about 900-1000 pix wide, for nice viewing online
I used Photoshop CS and a Wacom Bamboo Create tablet.

Oh maybe I wasn't clear, I drew the arrows in to try to show you what direction the fur should go. Β Does that make sense? Β I was trying to give a visual reference for which way it naturally lays

Sorry, I don't have Paint tool sai :S I haven't used it before, but my friend uses it and I tried to walk her through the tutorial using it. Apparently there isn't a smudge tool on there, nor a dodge? But you can basically do the same steps, just with the PTS equivalent. I would recommend looking up tutorials on PTS, like how to effectively smudge, lighten, and create clipping masks. I found info on google by searching it

Paint tool SAI does have clipping masks. I mix SAI and PSE for the best of both, since SAI can save images as PSD images.

Sidonie In reply to NagareStar [2013-01-17 19:15:00 +0000 UTC]
Ooh well that would depend on the medium. Some layering paler colours on top works, while some you should start light and work dark. Oil and acrylic one could use this technique just fine I think, while watercolours and dry media like pencil crayons one should start light and layer dark over top.

This is a very nice tutorial! (: I always wondered how people went about doing detail like this, but when I looked at some other tutorials, the directions aren't as clear as I find yours to be. I hope I get to actually try this technique out some day!

Ohh Thank you! I know that a lot of the tutorials I looked up when I was starting digital work always assumed one knew all about the programs, so I was trying to explain to beginners as well. I hope you do get to try it out!
