Description
Thorax starts his new life as The King of The Changelings! My submission for NATG IX: Day 10! Whoo, ten days already, guys, I can't beleive it's gone to fast! Today's prompt was "Draw a pony as another species (Draw a MLP species other than a equine) / Draw a pony starting a new life." And I kinda' decided I wanted this oppurtunity to draw my boy Thorax, here, since I've never drawn him before! And I love 'im. And y'know, man, he's really fun to draw. Like kinda' relaxing and enchanting, especially when you get to the colouring. Like, it feels a little like drawing a dress when drawing his design, hah design. And also, I never really noticed this before, but the flaps around his bug-wings are kinda' like lady-bug's, redish with spots. Which makes him sort of like a pony-bug lady bug. Where the new changeling designs all like this? Because man, it's actually super cute and I love the design ten times more now xD
So yeah, this saw drawn from a reference and I feel this drawing is a little bit wonky-ish, kinda' in the face mostly, but really inspite of its fault I'm really quite happy. I think I just enjoyed drawing him so much, and he looks totally adequate, and I'm completely happy with that, doesn't need to be perfect. Thorax is got all the being perfect enough to himself already <3 And a drawing is a drawing, eh!
But seriously, I really like Thorax xD He's adorable and he's exactly the kind of male character I've liked to see in the show, or well in any cartoon honestly. And I relate to him alot.
Also, I think almost every time—except once I think where I did a dragon Dashie?—when we get this kind of prompt, I've happened to draw a changeling of some kind xD I think my brain just goes "pony and another species" → "species-changing pony" → "changeling" xD Changelings are great, sue me!

Very well done! I always liked Thorax and on screen he is relaxing and enchanting to see. I remember the instant he was first shown in the Season 6 Finale which is an amazing finale and my 2nd fave of all. Season 6 was pretty amazing and Season 7 had a lot of good episodes and we got to see Thorax speak and do things. I never noticed his wing flaps were colored like a lady-bug's. That is a good observation. This drawing is very impressive. I hope we see more of him.

Man, are you serious? This is perfect! I've opened my watchlist a moment ago and I wasn't really paying attention to who did what, just opened everything to take a look. I thought it was actually a vector traced from the show! Seriously, lines are close to absolutely spot on and colour is actually there. And Thorax is not an easy model to pull this through, he has a really complex design through and through. Congratulations!
And yeah, Thorax is awesome. Really well thought and fleshed-out character. It's always a joy to see him on screen. <3

Oh, well thank you very much, haha! Mostly it's with the head/muzzle. Thorax's muzzle really pokes out more than it does here and is smaller I think, so it's not quite right. But it's mostly probably because I was drawing from a reference and doing that you can really see what's "wrong" as the artist even when it's actually totally fine and it doesn't matter. For interest, this was the reference I was using.
Yeah, he is quite complex; but you just take it slow and step at a time and honestly the little details where just soothing and nice to slowly draw and go through. Because each individual element of each detail is actually reall simple. Like maybe it's some lines, or some dots, or some gradient easily applied with a gradient brush. But it all slowly comes together and just looks nice. Honestly it kinda feels like when you do a Minecraft build. Each individual block placement is super easy, but over time your gradually build this nice-looking thing
And yeah, I absolutely agree, he's lovely and definitely love seeing him get screen time <3 I almost, or used to almost at least, miss him as he used to be as a changeling, because he's was super cute even then and kinda' the contract of the changeling exterior and heart of gold was just great. But his new design is also super lovely and probably nice for him personally because it much more fits his personality and such. And seriously, I didn't really notice as much until I draw it, but his design is super pretty Like unironically. Like it's all sparkly and bright and such. Like it makes him really feel like he's just the male Princess of the Changelings, along with the other Princess, which I guess is fitting. Another point, it's also great seeing a strong male leader that has an important Princess-stakes role in the show. Espcially that it's a character like Thorax who's, arguably a little weak willed, but he's just trying to be as fair and caring and considerate as any of the other Princesses would be in Equestria, and he's not, like, steriotypically "male leader role"-y, if that makes sense?

It's brilliant <3 Yeah, it may be different than reference, but it doesn't mean it's a mistake. It's not anatomically incorrect, so it's fine. It's a stylistic choice more than anything.
That's true, if it's not complex it's really rewarding to add all these little things.
Oh, a gradient brush? I need to look it up. I add gradients by selecting an area and using a gradient fill. Wonder how the brush will work.
Ah, true. This way of constructing really gets you into the flow, it's not too easy, not too difficult, just right to sit down and get on with.
He was great all the way. Even though as a changeling he was obviously a clone of other changelings in terms of design, he still was his own character and really cute. It just shows how expressive the designs in the show are. Plus yeah, the contrast between the looks and who he was was playing a big part here. The new design fits the personality more, as well as the role - it's bright in colour and grand in form, perfect blend. The greens are very appealing, and, as much as I love this colour, it's really hard to find a good shade of it. It can be sickly and unappealing, but here it's all nicely saturated.
Yeah, his role is quite special, as he was chosen for it, but still needs to grow into it. Similarly to Twilight, but with more responsibility right from the get go. It's interesting to see him, not only as you say as a very non stereotypical male leader, but also as a leader who needs to learn as he goes. It kinda fits into our other conversation about not knowing everything as an adult. Thorax also doesn't know exactly how to rule, but it doesn't matter. He has good examples to refer to, he's not afraid to ask for help and he has his heart at the right place. Most of the time, that's all you need in life.
