Description
FULL VIEW IS BEST!Ok, since a lot of people ask how I colour my work, I made this tutorial. I hope its easy to understand. I broke the picture down into steps showing the process I use to colour and shade a picture.
Basically all the info is there. If you want to colour like this then my most important tip is to use 5 or 6 shades. The more shades you use, the better and more three dimensional the picture looks. Don't use too many shades though cos you don't want it to go too dark.
As for the fur, I hope I showed clear enough how I do fur like this. It's simple once you get the hang of it and looks really good. It's taken me about 3 years to perfect it basically cos I couldn't find a tutorial on it.
And that's another reason I did one, to help anyone who is struggling.
If you have a go at colouring using my tutorial, please let me see!

That's very interesting! I often wondered how you made your pictures, and now I know! Very awesome and wonderfully detailed!
I don't have nice enough pencil crayons to attempt this type of advanced colouring. -Kel

Yep that's how I do them! Its taken me about 2 years to get right.
Buy some good coloured pencils and see how you do! You'll really be surprised at how much more awesome pictures look when coloured like this.

Wow, that's a long time!
I'm interested to know though, your lineart is so smooth, what type of pen do you use?
And yeah, I'll have to look around, when I find some good ones, I'll buy and try colour like this. I used to love Colleen crayons, they're made in Japan, but you seldom see them, and when you do, they're really expensive.
Have you tried Fabre-Castel? (or something) I find the lead to be too hard. -Kel

I just use a fine line pen 0.5 size. I go over the lines with it and then render them.
Japanese pens and pencils are often good. Yeah we have Faber-Castel here, they're supposed to be good.

awsome!! <3
...sry to annoy, but out of curiosity, how do u do white then?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Silvolf In reply to Wolfattwilight [2008-07-27 16:29:13 +0000 UTC]
It's not annoying! To do white, you just don't put the pale colour down. The white acts as the palest colour. Instead you leave larger highlights to show the body or whatever is white.
Thanks for the !

Basically you take it in steps, it also helps to think each one out before jumping in and colouring. That's what I did with Meck, the first Dreikon I coloured like this.

did you work out the 5 shade thing and dont use black for shadows by yourself or were you taught it? cos we didnt learn this till uni! lucky you!
and awesome tute, i will be using it

Silvolf In reply to angstmonkey [2008-07-27 10:12:53 +0000 UTC]
I worked it out myself. We weren't taught it in art class, not even in college. Actually our art classes were pretty lame. I don't even remember being taught a colour wheel so my choice of colours is sometimes a bit off. I found out the using a similar colour really dark for the darkest shade because my navy blue happens to go darker than my black. Its the softness of the lead I think.
Thanks for the ! I hope it is useful.

This was really interesting to read
I would try it out but I usually draw humans. I could always try this out on Lisandra's hair. I've been looking for a way to colour in her hair with pencil crayons and I think this will be perfect I could always add in less short strokes so her hair doesn't look too much like fur. I might try it out digitally when I get my copy of CS3. I'm sure this would work in digital as well.

It works on humans too, I've used it for hair before. Yeah, have a go at using it on Lisandra's hair and see how it turns out! It works for me anyway. I know how to do a similar technique in digital using photoshop and gradient shading.
Thanks for the !

Oh okay, that's good it will work for them too
I think I may give it a try later. I'm bored during the summer all the time enough as it is I should take out my Prismacolor pencil crayons and use them, I haven't in a long time X3
Okay. Doing the same thing in digital will possibly be my first CS3 experiment. But I'd have to change the opacity of each colour which might be a pain
