if i must teach you Anything, it's that no tutorial can ever be as helpful as practising

Contest prize for (if you want somthing else let me know..)

anyway.. i dont have photoshop so its a bit messy but its all there

1) No big deal, start with lineart – this character is M00n-fangs fursona Edal, half wolf half hyena =3

2) I’ve used two different coloured pencils to outline the shape of the fur, it should all have a flowing feel and, like triangles, should fit together with no gaps.

3) I very roughly coloured in that fur with the base of that fur colour.

4) Basically just repeat these steps until it’s nice and even (which this isn’t but...)

5) Now then just touch things up with a black pencil, try to give them shadows. I went over a few lines, Not all of them, but a lot to give it that shadow and depth blah blah blah. For the yellowish fur I used a dark brown pencil because I think black would be far to over-powering.

6) Spots..why spots > _ < well I just coloured them like a 6 year old, pushed hard using two pencils and tried to blend them. so not much to learn there. Now its time to colour the body.

7) Do you see where im going with this? I shaded all of the darkest areas for your sake. Just extending your lines that your originally drew (the line art) and knowing where an animals muscle and bones are most obvious, can help with this step. Push harder for darker and the opposite for lighter (duh)

8) Ive just extended those shadowy areas and made sure its consistant. You can see ive left the tendons very obvious (not coloured yet) that help to make it look a little more 3D

9) paws: shade with the gradient darkest at the bottom and lightest at the top
eyes: shade starting dark at one end and eventually getting lighter as you go around the pupil
collar: leave a veticle line ( or a ziggy zaggy styled line like ive done) uncoloured to give the impression that its shiny
body: ive just finnished colouring it, you can use a white pencil (and in this case a white and yellow pencil) to smooth out areas, make other areas lighter and to blend two different colours. that said, using different shades of a colour you can create more realistic looks.

gah.. i hope this is ok.. understandable.. pointful etc it took a hell of a long time so i really do hope its useful.

Enjoy!

Thanks a very nice tutorial!
But I must ask, how do you know where to place each "tuft" of hair. Such as on the thicker neck fur? I always have trouble, and it ends up looking scaly....

This looks really good!
But you should be careful- the shading on the back legs is incredible, in picture 8, but you lose some of it in the final piece. I feel that if you left it a little bit more defined, it might look more real... n_n

Fox-Whisky In reply to DavidBrainbow [2008-09-24 12:47:52 +0000 UTC]

thank you!

i know exactly what you mean and im glad you agree if i were to do this again id add a bit more Dark brown in that area to create more shadows because its very... bland and as you said undefined...too solid

thanks again!
