It was like slow motion. Waking to April's voice, seeing a figure standing before her, dangerously close to the dresser. Verdigris usually slept with the egg between him and June, as they had April when she was an infant, and of course it was the one night when he'd set it down for all of a second while he folded laundry and wound up 'resting his eyes'. Now his kids were right in front of this fluffy dark intruder, who looked suspiciously like...

Alec?

Slow motion turned into much too fast as Alec realized he was awake, taking whatever he stole as he lept out the window. He barely had time to boom out the word 'Hey!' and throw the covers off before Alec hit the ground, swiping up another dark bundle and darting into the night. Just like that they were alone, the stillness of the night returned.

Verdi stared out the window for a moment before moving robotically, grabbing the egg on his way down to scoop up April, who was very perturbed that their sheets had been stolen. To be honest it sounded like she was underwater as Verdi moved to sit on the bed, his children in his arms.

Someone had broken into his house. Broken into his bedroom. Broken in while June was working a late shift, while April was awake and moving around, while he wasn't.

And it was his brother.

That motherfucking bastard.

"Hey, Daddy?" April's voice finally snaps him out of his stupor, "Was that Uncle Alec?"

"How do you know who that is?" Verdi tilted his head.

"Grandma showed me on that reeeeally big picture on the wall. She called it a 'family tree'." April explained, "And she had everyone's pictures, and that looked a lot like Uncle Alec. I heard Aunt Kia say he was a thief, so was it him?"

Verdi stared at her for a moment before sighing and nuzzling her. "Yes, that was him I think. You have a lot of aunts and uncles, and there are a couple we... don't really talk about because they did bad things."

"Like Uncle Maw?"

"Yes, like him." Verdigris sighed at the name, "It's late sunshine. It's time for bed. You can sleep with Daddy if you want."

That was how June found them when he returned home. April sprawled out in the loop of Verdi's tail, the egg held on his lap. And Verdi, wide awake, because he sure as hell wasn't going to sleep tonight.
