So here it is, finally! I was getting tired of the super old ref Vreyin had and decided to update her. I love revamps ~
In case anyone was wondering, 99% of the text is in past tense on purpose because it's indicating she's long dead. Like all of the other avians.
Oh, and you can see a preview of the new Shrike!
I don't have much to say at the moment, so I'd just like to say a special thanks to =kilara , ~Foxchibi , and =Humingbird for their help and support. C:
Also, this species belongs to =kilara and are not an 'open species', so please refrain from making one for your own as it is disrespectful to do so without her permission. She has quite a few awesome open species though! Here's a nice little list: [link]

wow. That is amazing just so amazing! I wish I could make a reference sheet like this! I don't know where I would even begin! I have been making one for my dragon type and I have all the pictures drawn just can't organize it into one awesome sheet like this XD

Where did you find the template?
I have had the thought of drawing more again for fun [not my own characters of course but those that you and shin and all them own ^^] I thought of trying to crochet one XD but I don't know how I would get all those colors right

Oh no I never uploaded a black/white template to use. XDD I pretty much just have it saved in my head and puke it out into PS whenever I make a new ref. Boxes will change shape, some will be removed, etc. Every ref is tweaked to be it's own. XD

I'm crazy and typically work on a 3kx4k canvas. 8D Refs are even bigger! WAY bigger!
I have a hard time working small, even on 8x11 paper. So that's my reason. 3:

I know how that can be. XD My laptop blue screened on me once while I was working on this ref. ;; I had to start all over with the text, and I had just finished editing it all! I was so frustrated.

Well I haven't been using this specific type of template for very long. XD You really only see it on this and my new Sardi ref. But I plan on using it more and more C:

Yeah! It felt weird writing in past tense, but I kept telling myself 'BUT SHE'S DEAD'. XD

can i ask you how you go about your coloring technique. it seems almost painted but also you still have some linework there. i love to learn how to do that with layers. right now i tend to use flats then create transparencies to create shades and highlights in more of a cell chading type way. its more cartoony looking.

I typically use four layers:
The top most layer is the line art layer, I never really touch that.
Layer 1, the bottom most layer is a single hue, blocking in the line art (on a separate layer of course).
Layer 2 is my color layer where I add in my base colors (ctrl+g in PS will group it with Layer 1, so you don't go out of the color blocks you just created, it's very handy).
Layer 3 is my shade layer! This layer is also grouped like Layer 2. C:

It so wasn't fair. I saw this come in on my phone and I went EEEEE but she was only an inch tall and I was stuck with that until I FINALLY got home and saw it full-sized and EEEEE I love her so much WOW. I like how she's interesting to look at, but not super-complex. Like she has gradients and such, but they're fairly contained, and she's still that interesting plum color with those nice red/orange bits. I love how much effort you put into developing her personality, from the PTSD to the generally lousy childhood love Shrike's new look btw! Definitely digging the not-as-busy face!. Plus you know I love me all dem sextastic MUSCLES. Plus she has so MANYYYY mmph I could stare at me them pretty delts allll day! Plus I totally love how you attached the wings!
Although I gotta say I love the random firefly things flytting about the sheet the best. I kept wondering what they were until I got to that part, and it's such a neat touch! In her story and on the sheet itself! Definitely an amazing job, Sky!

I like what you did with her colors. They're much more harmonious now. I also really like how you rendered the scales. They're obviously there, but they aren't overbearing.
By the way, what font do you use on references? It's amazingly legible despite being so small.

I'm glad you think they're not overbearing, I've been trying to make them more organic and less 'omfglookatthese!'
To answer your question! I use the font 'myriad pro'. It came with my copy of PSCS, but for some reason to access it I had to open up the font folder in the control panel (I use XP) and then restart the computer for it to show up in PS. It's considered a pro font, so you'd have to buy it elsewhere if you don't have it via PS CS and up (or obtain it illegally somehow).
