Description
Did you know there was a second RMS Mauretania? This one was named after the legendary Atlantic greyhound; after the first Mauretania was scrapped, Cunard named a new ship after her. This humble liner served in WW2 alongside Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, then went on to have a full career, although she remained overshadowed by her running mates and the original Mauretania; like her namesake, she ended her life as a cruise ship.Design Notes:
-As far as I’m aware, she was actually painted green as a cruise ship, but I gave her a white coat instead to tie her in with Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, who also wear white shirts or coats. The white also looks better with her other colors.
-Some people consider her to be a cousin to the original Queens; in my view, she’s more like their sister. Technically, Mary and Elizabeth aren’t sisters either, but within my lore the three of them all view each other as siblings. To this end, I made Mauretania 2 look very similar to them, especially Queen Elizabeth as those two look especially alike. She has the same black-and-white striped hair, and if she had a center part instead of bangs the red parts would frame her face just like Mary and Elizabeth.
-Her nose is more curved than the Queens’; the idea is that the shape is closer to what the original Mauretania has going on.
-I originally planned for her sleeves to be white, but I didn’t like how it looked next to her white gloves. To that end, I made them red and black instead.
-The two ribbons in her design are a reference to her namesake’s ribbon motif. The number refers to the fact that this is the second Mauretania.
-The art deco design on her skirt is meant to resemble clouds; this matches Queen Elizabeth’s flame design as well as the similar wave pattern Queen Mary would have had on an in-service outfit.
Personality:
Unlike her predecessor, Mauretania 2 is shy and reserved, preferring to hide behind her larger sisters instead of making her own mark on the world. She worries a great deal about whether she can truly live up to the first Mauretania’s legacy; she feels undeserving of such a legendary name, something which wasn’t helped by Aquitania’s poorly-hidden awkwardness about the topic (Aq, of course, was struggling with her grief over the original Mauretania, so although she tried her very best to avoid comparing the two it was impossible for her to hide her emotions, and Mauretania 2 picked up on that and took it to heart).
Notably, Mauretania 2 takes great pains to avoid her predecessor as much as possible now that they’re humans; she feels deeply unworthy of the original Mauretania’s friendship. Ironically, her namesake is delighted that another ship was named after her and would love to be friends with her!
Although she’s often forgotten in the shadow of her namesake and the Queens, Mauretania 2 deserves to be remembered. Here’s more information on her:
