In actuality, every class of destroyer in the Vanguard navy ever since it begun reaching out across the Solar System has been named the Brig-class, the new replacing the old(if differentiating is needed, a number is used following; the current is the Brig-22 class). The tradition came about when the Vanguard begun designing a whole new fleet to replace the old fleet of FTL-retrofitted vessels; the man responsible for naming the new destroyer had forgotten that the original was called the Brig, instead misremembering it as the name of the ship he had served aboard as an ensign.

The current generation of Brig-class Destroyer was designed during the Mantexx Campaigns, in direct response to the power of Mantexx destroyers; the brutalistic, excessive armour of Mantexx design meant the old Brig-21 class of missile destroyer, designed to counter the many but fragile vessels of the SEN, struggled to effectively counter them, let alone the cruisers they guarded. The new Brig changed tactic, adopting the Mantexx's very own doctrine of sheer brute force to use against them. To this end, the Brig's primary armament is a graviton-assisted coilgun of much larger than standard bore firing rocket-propelled KKVs, dealing immense kinetic damage next to other ships of similar weight.
This new Brig proved crucial in countering Mantexx destroyer wings, beginning a marked shift in the flow of battle during the Campaigns and ultimately assisting in the VCN's eventual victory.
