I don't mind people writing this and that about the rivalry between Sonic and Mario, but most people (most!) seem to assume that it's the only way to go. I mean, just because the two (and soon, three) games they've appeared together in are centered around competition doesn't mean it's all they can do, does it? I for one am a firm believer that they can bury the hatchet and fight alongside each other, rather than against each other.The Mario's sprite from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga; I downloaded it just for this stamp. The Sonic sprite's from Sonic Advance 2; I had it saved on my hard drive for who knows how long.
Just because we've never seen it happen doesn't mean it can't. And I'm absolutely sure it can. Who's with me?

I agree! I've seen them get along in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games! They should get along!

I'm planning on making a fanfic with Link, Sonic, and Mario joining up to stop Ganondorf, Bowser, and Robotnik but it's still in the pending phase - trying to work the introduction with worlds colliding somehow with Chaos Control or whatever. xD

There are too many pictures up on DA of them fighting. This sonic vs. mario thing is really old.
Sonic has been in shitty games (Sonic3D) and so has Mario (Hotel Mario).
The competition in the 90's was NOT Mario vs Sonic, it was Super Mario World vs. Sonic The Hedgehog. BIG DIFFERENCE!

Itβs funny that people say that Mario and Sonic hated when in reality it was Nintendo and Sega that hated each other. People also say that they missed βthe days when Mario and Sonic tried to kill each otherβ but how can you miss something that NEVER happened? Nintendo and Sega might have been at each otherβs throats but not the characters themselves. Think about it, Mario and Sonic are kind heroes who often risk their lives to save complete strangers so do you really think theyβll try to βkillβ another hero? If anything, making them try to kill each other would have been an insult to both characters and would have made them look like egotistical jerks.
After all, Sega and Nintendo have spent their entire lives trying to show how great and kind these heroes are, making them mortal enemies would have gone against everything they taught us. Judging by their personalities, they could become great friends; the worst I can imagine them being are friendly rivals.
Plus, the Sega and Nintendo rivalry would probably do more harm than good; the rivalry might have been necessary back then since there were many consoles but today we only have just a few so they would be losing money if the companies would have kept being petty and childish.
Sega and Nintendo have started to move on and itβs time for the fans to do the same.

I think of them as allies too and not because of the olympic games but because there doesn't really need to be a rivalry. It just adds more stress.

Not really. Rivals are basically two people who compete against each other. There are two kinds of rivalries. There's friendly ones and bitter ones. Rivals aren't necessarily enemies. Ken and Ryu are a perfect example of a friendly rivalry. They compete against each other to see who's stronger, but they still respect each other as friends and competitors.
