Description Quickly, one after the other, four of the Fighting Machines appeared.
Monstrous tripods, higher than the tallest steeple, striding over the pine trees and
smashing them. Walking engines of glittering metal. Each carried a huge funnel and I
realized with horror that I'd seen this awful thing before.

A fifth Machine appeared on the far bank. It raised itself to full height, flourished the
funnel high in the air - and the ghostly, terrible Heat Ray struck the town.

- Jeff Wayne’s Musical version of The War of the Worlds.

How absurd does that sound really? A musical version of HG Wells' The War of the Worlds… yet somehow it works.

Yes, I love the War of the Worlds. Jeff Wayne’s Musical version is my favourite adaptation, It’s the only one that has the tripods and is set in 1890’s England. This Martian Tripod is based on the artwork for Wayne’s musical, God I love it!

Steven Speilberg and Tom Cruise are making another movie version of The War of the Worlds, apparently set in modern day America, starring Cruise… it makes me want to vomit in terror.

Haha, yeah I never did get around to seeing the Spielberg version, I probably should one day. Even though it's not as true to the book as the musical, it's still quite cool that H.G. Wells' story continues to inspire new adaptations.

For a simple ink sketch, this is surprisingly potent.

Best version dude, and much creds to you on joining the Jeff Wayne side of the remakes!

Cool sketch

thanks. Well, Jeff Wayne's version is the most true to the original story, which is somewhat amusing considering its a musical adaptation

I'm proud to say I still havent' seen Speilberg/Cruise's attempt at it.

oh I have....it's alright, but it's hard not to have a grudge towards it. Jeff Wayne's one is far more scary and British and...just...decent.

War of the Worlds rocks!

I don't really like Jeff Wayne's Tripods, though, except for the eyes. I think the ones from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were much cooler, more menacing & much closer to what H.G. Wells would have wanted.

I agree that the tripods in the LXG were much more how Wells envisioned them, however the Jeff Wayne tripods were the first I ever saw. I remember as a little boy looking through the giant (compared to CDs) record covers and looking at the terrifying images and being scared absolutely shitless.

Yeah...I wanna get that album. I have a compilation CD of SF theme music that has the main theme on it, but that's all.

You know, I once had an idea for an anime-style mecha series that takes place on Mars were all the mecha are three-legged. Maybe it's a silly idea, though...

I say go with it, although there is the problem that three legged machines are generally a lot more likely to lose balance and fall.

Wow, I was just talking about War of the Worlds today. Love the drawing, and you're right about Tom Cruise...having him in War of the Worlds is almost as scary as Gerard Butler as the Phantom :-S.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Spaceman-Chris In reply to Phantomess05 [2004-09-04 04:04:05 +0000 UTC]

though it's early days, everything I've heard about this new adaptation is just wrong. Why do film makers like to rape HG Wells' novels!?!?!

Don't mention Butler, I'm already dreading listening to him sing...

Tripods are sexy. I love this Chris, somehow the tripod looks innocent... The "eyes" look so harmless, alteast untill he blasts you into ash with his heatray
