Description I apologize for the font used in these tutorials. I can't remember why I chose it in the first place but I kept using it so the tutorials would have some continuity in the form of layout.

This is a tutorial I thought I'd make for fun since I realised fringes/bangs aren't a very common tutorial topic. I hope this will help some of you and that the instructions are clear enough to understand. Explaining has never been my strongest asset.
If there's anything that needs clarification or if you want to know more, just ask! I can also make a foam/dread falls tutorials if needed.

NOTICE: I like to do things from scratch and I don't have much money so my equipment and materials may not be the easiest ones. So that's what I aim for my tutorial to show: how to make things with nothing extra or very fancy.

EDIT: When taking off the paper, try to take everything out. I was way too lazy when I was making this tutorial...

Sorry I look terrible in the pics, I couldn't be bothered to look good XD Also my sewing machine is old and barely works so sorry for the messy sewing

Thanks for this, after several failed attempts to buy a fake fringe that matches my color I resolved to make my own. I was just going to cobble it together by looking at the one i bought but i think this is probably a less expensive way of learning how to do it ^^

One question though. If you are going for a clip in one (like i intend to) do you have to get every single scrap of paper out? Or an I better coloring the paper or using a dark colored paper so that it blends with my head better?

You can use tulle instead of paper, but it's a lot trickier to work with. No matter what your sewing will show tho, so you'll prolly want to cover it up with a headband anyways. ^-^

I don't have much experience with clips since they don't stay in my hair but it's always better to take all the paper out. And if you're gonna use clips you should be able to sew clean because the sewn part stays visible when attached to the clip.

Ohhhh I need to try this.
A few years ago, I found a roll of this neon orange thread-stuff in a thrift shop. I have no idea what it is, but since it's on a huge roll I assume it's used for manufacturing fabrics or something. Anyway, if I comb the fibers apart it looks exactly like my hair, but neon orange! Totally trying this with it, thanks for the great tutorial!

Ooh, if it was weaving hair (like this [link] ) then it should work really nicely! Also, you can get a nice result if instead of the headband, you use clips like this [link] (:

Emoeba In reply to SpookyLoop [2011-07-12 23:50:15 +0000 UTC]

My neon orange mystery thread stuff definitely isn't weaving hair xD
But I made a lock to test and it works pretty well. I need to style it better though, my hair is really short and it's way too long for me lol
It's on a little barrette clip for now because it's all I have on hand. Works alright though.

Very well done tutorial, how do you sew in the clips instead of doing it on a headband?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

FrozenBleedingStake In reply to inaligrimalkin [2011-07-27 13:46:12 +0000 UTC]

If you use tulle instead of paper, it's not to hard to hand-stitch the clips on...but working with the tulle is a LOT harder!! lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

SpookyLoop In reply to inaligrimalkin [2011-03-15 21:46:18 +0000 UTC]

It's quite complicated if you use loose Kanekalon for that. You can buy the material in a ready-made weave ([link] ) and then attach the clips ([link] ) to that. That should work (:

You knw you can take weave trak and make them...its LOADS easyer!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpookyLoop In reply to LittleCyberDog [2010-12-21 22:53:53 +0000 UTC]

Sure, but the cheapest ones cost around $20 when a bag full of loose Kanekalon is usually less than $3 (and one bag is enough for about 10+ (maybe even 20+) fringes or you can make fringes and dreadlocks). Plus this way you can easily add your own colours in or make striped ones etc.
I kind of want to do everything from scratch anyway but thanks for the idea (:

a little tip of my own- using tulle instead of paper is much more comfortable and looks neater ^^

SpookyLoop In reply to MrsOsuwari [2010-12-21 16:41:53 +0000 UTC]

I've tried tulle, parchment paper and a third material (I simply can't recall what it was) since paper always felt too thick to work with but they never worked for me. They always kept tearing too easily or they wouldn't stay still or it just refused to co-operate with me :/

Macabreskiss In reply to ??? [2010-12-21 15:30:42 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you for the tutorial I realy like it. My parents won't let me dye my hair crazy colours, but it doesn't always look good with the falls I wear. This is a great outcome, since I'm a cheap ass and rather make my own stuff than buying a nice bang extension.

Thanks again!

SpookyLoop In reply to Macabreskiss [2010-12-21 16:33:28 +0000 UTC]

I feel ya! I'm allergic to hairdyes (I can only use ones that stay on for like 6 washes) and it really bugs me that I can't wear my hair like I'd like! That's why I've become quite good with the gimmicks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Macabreskiss In reply to SpookyLoop [2010-12-21 18:14:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh, being allergic to hairdye sucks

The only thing I stumbled upon when I made my dreadfalls is that they're actually not full enough to hide the back of my head.
I'm planning on making black and blue dreads and I ordered the kanekalon already (a few packages more than the brown ones). I hope it's enough, since you can't really do anything to hide your real haircolour on the back of your head.

I'm glad I found your tutorial for the bangs and such <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpookyLoop In reply to Macabreskiss [2010-12-21 23:01:56 +0000 UTC]

Hmm that can be a tricky problem... Usually two falls with around 30-35 double-ended dreads in each is enough to cover the back and it shouldn't be too heavy. Although dreads are and will always feel somewhat heavy. But lately I've solved that problem by simply using bobby pins to keep some of the dreads in place. Some others will eventually cover the parts where the bobby pins are visible so no one will really see what kind of tricks you've used
Playing with dreads is always so much work! I haven't had mine on for months because of the climate (summer too hot for them, winter cold and I wanna be able to wear a hat) but it's just made me love cyberlox since I can basically just throw them on me and I'm done I still miss my dreads, have to put them back on when I can spare 7 hours

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Macabreskiss In reply to SpookyLoop [2010-12-22 20:11:59 +0000 UTC]

I used 80 to 90 single dreads for two falls. I thought it would be enough, but I guess it wasn't They aren't heavy at all, so maybe it just not enough.
The bobbypins are a good idea as well

It is indeed alot of work, but I think it's worth it. I can't have real dreads because of my work. And since I work alot I don't have alot of time to wear the falls either.
I like cyberlox as well, but they're very expensive, also if you buy a bag of a few yards and make them yourself.

Does it really take 7 hours to get them in yourself? How much of them do you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpookyLoop In reply to Macabreskiss [2010-12-28 19:18:28 +0000 UTC]

Is cyberlox really that expensive? I've always thought it's relatively cheap but oh well. And yeah, usually it takes up to 7 hours to attach them to my hair... My hair is really long (almost to the waist) and I do it always all by myself so that makes it slower. I use about 60-70 dreads - both single and double ended - and it just kills me to braid everything. On a good day it only takes 3 and a half hours but usually my arms get too tired to go so fast :/

Macabreskiss In reply to SpookyLoop [2010-12-28 20:02:47 +0000 UTC]

There aren't alot of places to buy cuberlox here in the netherlands. Or, lets say, I don't know any. It's also hard for me to buy them somewhere else because I don't own a credit card or anything.
It makes them rather expensive since there's only one place I can buy them from.

Pff, seems like a tough job to braid them all in. Especially when your hair is that long! I wish I could have them braided in

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpookyLoop In reply to Macabreskiss [2010-12-28 21:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah I see... They're expensive if you don't buy them online. I buy mine from [link] , I don't know all their paying methods but you should check out if they accept cash sent in or so. All their stuff is really good and very cheap (a bag of Kanekalon at a store here in Finland costs around 9 euros, at I Kick Shins it's less than $3...) Their shipping costs a bit much though but I think it's worth it. But try and see if there's any way you could order from them (:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Macabreskiss In reply to SpookyLoop [2011-01-05 10:19:04 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, maybe I could check them out, I heard about them earlier.
Kanekalon isn't very expensive here either, about 3 euros. Cyberlox are about 18 euros a bag :S And sometimes they have them on sale, they're 1 euro a metre. Maybe I could try the ones on sale some time.

Shipping cost won't be much of a problem when I order quite some stuff in one time, I guess Thanks for the advice!
