Description
Oh god it's been ages since I've made a tutorial and I kind of lost my touch... Well, here it is anyway: the most requested tutorial How to make double-ended synthetic dreads!I apologize for the font used in these tutorials. I can't remember why I chose it in the first place but I kept using it so the tutorials would have some continuity in the form of layout.
I hope these instructions help you. They're clear to me, but might be very confusing to the rest of you, so don't hesitate to ask if something's unclear.
Sorry this has so much text in it. I usually have more pictures to demonstrate but it was too hard to take pictures for this. I wish this was shorter. Maybe I'll make a video of this in the future, would be easier to follow than this mess of words.
I'm half done with three other tutorials (how to make candycane dreads, how to make transitional dreads, and how to make curly dreads) so yay, a few more requested tutorials are finally on their way!

Do you know how to make Tri-Transitional dreads? I've been looking everywhere for a tutorial but I can't find any! If you do could you please explain to me the process? I've made normal transitional dreads before but now I would like to use three colors. Β Thanks!

Been toying with the idea of doing a single dread in my hair but didn't want the fuss of making them myself or what I would do if I wanted to remove it. Great tutorial, now I can make them!

I just tried this five minutes ago. I found that if you dunk them in boiling water and THEN hit it with a flat iron (no towl) it seals very nicely. I'd ONLY use the flat iron for this use however....I don't use this iron on my hair anymore because I dont want plastic residue in it it

Have you tried suing a heat gun to seal them?

Can't say I have. I don't have a lot of money so I try to make my accessories/hair pieces with stuff I can find in my house (excluding the Kanekalon and cyberlox and whatnot), so I don't tend to use more professional/advanced things.

Okay, just wondering. I might try one if I ever get around to making some dreads- although, I'll probably get one of the cheapo $20 heat guns. XD
Thanks for this tutorial, by the way.

Your way's better then mine!
I make them with smal loops at the top to weave in but this way looks like they're one hell of a lot easier to install.
And you steam them! I stupidly use hot water and end up with like a dozen minor burns haha! that's my own stupid falt though.
Nice tutorial :3

You mean you make single-ended dreads? God I hate those XD They're so much work to put on and because my hair is so long, the hair has to be braided all the way down and ugh. They don't work for me at all, I switched to double-ended dreads years ago Single-ended dreads look really good on some people though. Especially if they have short hair and lots of dreads!
I use both steam and hot water I'm way too familiar with the burns as well XD

I think I'd prefer to make double ended dreads too cause I have long hair too and they just look so much better in longer hair. only Ive never really known how to start a double ended dread off XD LOL!
I only knew what I was taught with the single ended ones and like you said, they're so much damn effort to put in and don't actually look all that good, I have to make sure they're done properly or else the tips of them just look like bulges on the top of my head lol.
This tutorial is really helpfull, I'm most certainly going to try double ended dreads and see if they're easier for me

Super clear, and fairly simple! I have some blue kanekalon just sitting around, I think I'm gonna practice on that.

Hey, this is awesome. I've dabbled with making synth dreads and although there were many tutorials they never really helped much, but this... this makes much more sense.
Not to mention the way you've written it inspires and lets people know what doesn't work, what can occur that you don't want etc., whilst not making you feel like an idiot if it goes wrong. (( if that makes sense? ))
Love it, I will have to get my supplies back out when I can and use your tips.

Not something I'd consider for myself but reading through I was just wondering why, when you're sealing the dreads you don't use something like forceps (right word?) or tweezers to hold the end while it's heated.

SpookyLoop In reply to live-inspired [2011-10-11 13:38:15 +0000 UTC]
You could do that, but it's very hard to keep the dread twisted with tweezers or forceps. It's so much easier to keep the dread tight with the grip of your fingers. Plus tweezers and forceps are usually metal or plastic. Plastic can melt and metal gets hot, so I'd definitely go with fingers
