Description
I apologize for the font used in these tutorials. I can't remember why I chose it in the first place but I kept using it so the tutorials would have some continuity in the form of layout.I was asked for this so here it is. I'll try to make a less confusing version if I find the time. I hope this will help some of you and that the instructions are clear enough to understand. Explaining has never been my strongest asset.
If there's anything that needs clarification or if you want to know more, just ask!
Sorry I don't have good pictures of the result! I'm wearing my dreads so can't model for these at the moment and the styrofoam head with the purple foam dreads was damaged on its way to Finland from USA! (It was shipped with the wig and the falls on it.)
NOTICE: I like to do things from scratch and I don't have much money so my equipment and materials may not be the easiest ones. So that's what I aim for my tutorial to show: how to make things with nothing extra or very fancy.

Thanks for that tutorial, I found it very easy to follow.
I'm having a problem though. I can't get them to stay in my hair without them sliding out. What would you recommend? Should I use hair grips or something?

Bobby pins. Loads and loads of bobby pins. The best way to make them stay where they are supposed to is simply to stiffen the base of the buns you're attaching these to. If you have scrunchies/rubber bands that are wide and flat, use them at the base of the buns. Also make sure that the falls are at the very base of the bun, and seal the deal with loads of bobby pins to keep everything in place (:

All of these fall tutorials are amazing <3! Especially the dreads, your method is by far the easiest of all the ones I've seen ;u;

It really does! Out of all hair falls I think foam falls are also the biggest pain in the ass since they can be really hard to make and style, but once you get the hang of it you'll have no problem!

heya!
firstly, epic tutorial I made some..but now i'm kinda stuck because I have no idea how to put them in my hair :S i think it's not done like your cyberlox, since those are attached to scrunchies and your foam falls are bound together with lace..how do i attach them to my hair without them falling off? D: would be great if you could help

I've been meaning to make a tutorial on how to mount cyberlox/dreadfalls/foam falls and braiding dreads in but I've never gotten around to do it... This gives quite a good look into how to do it [link] (Until step 7, rest is for dreadfalls only)
This works better if the hair is up on two pigtails first, then braided and then made into buns. Make sure the buns are on top of the head and not on the sides since they're more likely to fall off/not look so good when they're on the sides.
When you have the buns just wrap the falls around them (so the falls are as close as close as possible to the base of the bun) and tie the ends together like you'd tie your shoes. Make sure the lace is tight.
Don't be afraid to use loads of bobby pins if you're having trouble with the falls/buns staying in place.
I hope this makes even some sense, my mind is not where it should be at the moment XD

I was thinking of doing this for Connecticon. This may sound stupid but I wanted to know, I do I attach them to my wig? My wig is about should length and not that thick. Should I pin them to my wig, or do something else?

SpookyLoop In reply to Kaimodas [2011-02-25 22:53:48 +0000 UTC]
It's a bit difficult to explain without a proper tutorial but basically you put the hair (natural hair or the hair on the wig) on two buns and you wrap these firmly around those. It works better if the hair is up on two pigtails first, then braided and then made into buns. I don't know if your wig has enough material to carry the weight of these or not, so you should definitely do some testing before the big day (:

Ok I understand, I just think my wig wont be able to hold it but I will definitely try when I make the falls! Thanks for answering my question xD

I hate to bother you again but I just loved the little box designs you did on your foam strips in the tutorial so much that I used a slightly modified version for a background to one of my pictures. I hope you don't mind.

Ah. I was interested to see how other people make their foam falls. I do mine almost completely different from you!
But I like the idea of glueing two together like that and then folding.

SpookyLoop In reply to REL-CCC [2011-02-08 00:02:09 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, people keep telling me this is a very unusual way of making them but I learnt it from someone who makes dreads and foams for living so it has to be a good technique in the end! How does your way differ in general?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
REL-CCC In reply to SpookyLoop [2011-02-08 20:46:16 +0000 UTC]
Well I have two different styles that I do.
One is the "Waterfall" where you line up about four strips or more of foam, tier them and then flip so that the bottom piece of foam just barely folds enough to make a loop and then I tie it with lace, rexlace, etc. This makes big, full falls.
The other way is "Length" where I line up four or more strips of foam and then the piece sitting on top is slid back some so taht it can fold enough to go underneath the bottom piece of foam. I punch a hole though all the pieces of foam (twice for the top piece since it folds underneath) and pull lace, rexlace, etc thorugh and tie a know on the front. The loop formed from folding the top piece of foam over is wehre I pull whatever I am mounting the falls on through. also, I can cut the strips to make layers if I want. This way makes less "full" falls but they still look mighty good.
Yep... I might try your way though and see how that works out.

SpookyLoop In reply to REL-CCC [2011-02-08 21:12:05 +0000 UTC]
Ooh sounds interesting. I might try different styles when I do more foam falls just so I can compare (I'm more of a cyberlox and dreadlock person so I work with foam quite seldom). I think my technique works, but it might be a bit tricky and it works best if you want long, not-so-puffy falls. I think next time I'll try to make shorter and cuter ones

REL-CCC In reply to SpookyLoop [2011-02-08 21:23:09 +0000 UTC]
Haha! yeah, I own like three pairs of foam falls and I love them all.
I can't afford to buy cyberlox right now though (so pricey!)but I am trying my hand at synthetic dreads. From what I can see, the materials are cheap but you need a ridiculous amount for it to work.
If you have any suggestions on making dreads I would love to hear it.
