I might not have been from her era and lost out on a lot of her time, but I think this picture captures that smile that hid such sadness for so many years.

Back atcha!
I was 23 when I did it, and I was stippling with an .06 rapidograph-- these days it takes me like 9 months to finish a painting-- I'm getting more obsessive as I get older!

Chunkybeefpainting In reply to SRaffa [2012-03-03 08:48:01 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Indeed!
9 months is very intense for a painting, but I feel there is much more life and variety with painting that will allow it to go that long. When it comes to stippling though, I feel my ability to continue on ages in dog years.
I feel it is worth it, as the end result is what lives on; although, that is easy said as I am still learning to cultivate that degree of patience.
I recently read that the inventor Jacob Rabinow would employ a mental approach to tackling long projects when endurance was needed. I don't believe that I could convince myself of his notion but it was interesting. What he did when setting to a long task was pretend to be jail. He would hold that it didn't matter how long it took because he had nothing but time. He found it freed him from worrying about making mistakes and feeling pressured. Anyhow, I thought it was interesting.

SRaffa In reply to Chunkybeefpainting [2012-03-03 22:38:16 +0000 UTC]

Definitely, it is! In my own case, I'd find that I'd go ahead and sign a project, declaring it finished, before I really felt satisfied, so that months later, I'd find myself tearing it out of it's frame so that I could go another nine rounds with it-- I finally got to the point where I really did know when the damned thing was finished, regardless of the ridiculous amount of time I'd put in to it, and wouldn't sign it until that finally happened...
It's some consolation to know that Leonardo worked on the Mona Lisa, a fairly small painting, for YEARS, and never really did consider it finished...

Chunkybeefpainting In reply to SRaffa [2012-03-04 19:33:47 +0000 UTC]

I like that approach. I find that I won't start a project unless I know how it is going to turn out in he end. Everything else is just getting to that point.

SRaffa In reply to Chunkybeefpainting [2012-03-04 23:58:25 +0000 UTC]

I think Alfred Hitchcock had a similar approach as you do-- I'm always hoping to be surprised just before the end-- some of my favorite experiences with painting have come in the form of surprises near completion!

Chunkybeefpainting In reply to SRaffa [2012-03-05 01:12:47 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense. I almost always have left over ideas come up while working. It would be nice to incorporate them into the end product.

Absolutely-- that can make the difference between something technically admirable and something earth shakingly inspired...
