so things are picking up a little bit....

Nothing puts the vim and vigor back in my step quicker than listening to "Beautiful World"... For you, For you, For you, NOT ME...
Anything I can do to help, brother?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

madbaumer37 In reply to SRaffa [2010-06-09 18:34:30 +0000 UTC]

"praying hands" always puts a smile on my face. it start off as a dance song of the "hokey pokey" variety and by the time the first chorus hits you realize you're listening to a very sarcastic indictment of organized religion.

thanks, brother. i'll be ok. i've noticed these bouts have been getting more severe and harder to conceal lately. but it'll pass eventually.

SRaffa In reply to madbaumer37 [2010-06-09 18:49:56 +0000 UTC]

This is something you've had to deal with before?
Oh my gosh, I think it's possible I've never heard "Praying Hands", and I thought I'd heard all of their stuff; have you kept track of Mark Mothersbaugh? He was doing great movie soundtracks, last I'd heard...

ever since i was about 10 years old.
it's off of their first album. simply perfect album from start to finish. brian eno produced it.
yeah, he's done a TON of movie soundtracks. he does wes anderson's movies and i think he worked with scorcese once.

You've seen a doctor about it? It's just something you've had to accept, pretty much?

madbaumer37 In reply to SRaffa [2010-06-09 19:40:11 +0000 UTC]

actually i'm thinking about finally breaking down and seeing a shrink.

SRaffa In reply to madbaumer37 [2010-06-09 19:50:26 +0000 UTC]

Don't forget to apply Robert Blake's rule about shrinks-- if you don't LIKE him or her right away, don't even bother...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

madbaumer37 In reply to SRaffa [2010-06-09 19:53:16 +0000 UTC]

robert blake said that?
that's some pretty sound advice!
man he was so creepily excellent in lost highway.
i had to see a couple of shrinks when i was a teenager. didn't like them.

SRaffa In reply to madbaumer37 [2010-06-09 19:59:25 +0000 UTC]

I saw one when I turned twenty-- I'm no genius, but I was definitely the smartest guy in THAT room! The guy meant well, but what I mostly got out of it was admitting to myself that my own feelings were important enough to schedule an hour a week to go and talk with this poor guy... I think psychiatrists are a great IDEA, though; I'm thinking it might be a thing that women are better at doing than guys are-- I think guys are drawn to the idea of INTIMACY WITHOUT RESPONSIBILITY, and that's what most of them find appealing about being shrinks, whereas, I think that women who are drawn to that profession are motivated by an honest desire to help... But Judd Hirsch in Ordinary People and Gabriel Byrne in HBO's perfectly excellent In Treatment are two shrinks I'd go see in a New York minute...

that's an amazing analysis.
my psychology teacher in college was amazing.
she was old enough to be my mother. but, brother, she was RADIANT! absolutley gorgeous and passionate about learning. she seemed to be genuinely interesting in everything.
i'd totally hang out with gabriel byrne's character from miller's crossing.
david cronenberg's new movie is about jung and freud. viggo mortenson plays jung.

HOLY CRAP COUNT ME IN FOR THAT ONE!!!
Is there any chance in the world that you could get in touch with that teacher now? I realize you might be hesitant to bring up the subject of your depression with her, but she might be more receptive to that from you than you'd guess...
