I think it looks really good for your 3rd try! The eyes are blinking well, and it's a nice design and pose. The only thing is just more cleaning up small details. The very bottom of the irises and bottom eye lash have hard black edges that could use some anti-aliasing to smooth it out. Also you can erase some pixels on the edges of the outline on the face and arm because they are unneeded. But very nice overall ^ ^

I dont know about the transform tool, I don't trust it because it usually smudge out my art...but the tutorial is nice, clean and let say professional because of its concept and organization

staticwind In reply to JuicyZone [2012-05-28 03:18:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the comment! If you don't know about it, then I'd gladly tell you what I have learned. If pixels ever get smudged (which means it adds more colors to the color palate that weren't there) it's just because anti-aliasing is turned on. The transform tool can be useful for animating things, but it will be very messy (placing pixels where you didn't want them to be). You will have to go in frame by frame and clean it up. You can't create a good looking animation with only transforms, but it's good to layout your idea for the animation.

For a simple eye blink though, it doesn't matter because you're only moving a few pixels vertically, which doesn't make mess.

Compared to hair blowing in the wind, I would transform rotate the tips of it instead of transforming it vertically, which is a lot more work, but it looks good with enough cleaning up.

But you can't use it for everything. Most things have to be redrawn. That's why it can come in handy to transform things which would have the same result as redrawing it when you're constantly animating.

For example, in this [link] The very first thing I did was rotate the boat each frame so I could get it moving. I had to go in frame by frame and redraw a lot of it because of the mess. But imagine if I had to redraw it entirely each frame. I also transformed her hair and the eyes , but I made sure it was clean. Everything else that's animated, the water, fire, the bucket, and the clothes, had to be completely redrawn, because it's not something rotating or moving up/down, but changing shape entirely.

Sorry for so much text, it's a lot to explain ;v;

this is honestly really bad advice, its really cheap/lazy to animate blinks like this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

JuicyZone In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-27 18:52:54 +0000 UTC]

a "professional animator" doesn't put 2 big fucking animated images on their profile (or portfolio) that blocks entirely everything...

And do you even know what the word "professional" stands for? No? To bad because your art is not Out of the extraordinary or WOW!

Now I see that the only good decent animation you have is ripped off from my little pony. Just small clips edited and formatted by gif.

The only one occupying a kbytes space is you...so shoooo, this is no place for stupid little amateurs kitties who think they know everything and criticize others who are more skillful.

The eye blink is such a simple animation, it only has a movement from up to down, what other way are you thinking would better that it matters so much? Many people didn't know how to animate pixels at all in photoshop, and I was showing them how. But the program isn't animating for you.

There's nothing wrong with using tricks when it creates the same result you wanted. When animating pixel art, the pixels are pushed frame by frame. With such a small image, if I had moved the pixels down by hand it would have been the same result. This is handy to know for animating much more complex animations that have many movements at once. It may look cheap when drawing it, but not with the finished result. It is useful for moving sections of larger animations, then editing them frame by frame. I would not call it lazy but very time consuming.

BumFondler In reply to staticwind [2012-05-25 00:43:14 +0000 UTC]

nobody blinks like this. And I am a professional animator believe it or not. This would take me literally a minute to do. Its simply a squished tween and a "u" shape to indicate a closed eye. A lot of noobs use tutorial and it makes their submissions look god awful. That was my point, I'm not disrespecting you as an artist, but when someone blink they close both eye lids not one, it take a little bit more work to animate both eye lids. But it looks soo much better. Yes this is a very lazy way to do it.

ink-wing-art In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-29 01:31:54 +0000 UTC]

first of all, i'm pretty sure that it would look worse to animate the bottom lid. the primary movement in blinking is in the upper lid. and secondly, the art is chibi. the anatomy of chibis is not comparable to ordnary human anatomy. and perhaps the noobs do badly because they're noobs and haven't yet developed the necessary level of skill. shortcuts aren't lazy. they're efficient. they work better, faster. it's a functioning, cute animation. it's not in any way ugly, or cheap-looking. this tut doesn't make the art seem complicated or time-consuming. it's just to get beginners started. she's not teaching anyone a bad way of doing things. and if you don't like her way, make your own tutorial. no need to go bashing a great artist for a helpful tut and a nice animation.

lol, looks can be very deceiving. And yes I am in fact a professional animator. Believe it or not buddy. Just because something is pixels does not excuse it from anatomy. Thank you.

Also I see you attempt animation as well, so I guess that gives you the room to downright insult me. Rather than criticize. Your a waste of dA space. They need to delete your megabytes.

LOL talk about anatomy.
You're right, none of your drawings have correct anatomy. Are you saying you're being deceitful on purpose to make me think you're that horrible?
I don't see one eye blink in your gallery, who's one to talk.

uPikachu In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-25 07:41:38 +0000 UTC]

What? who's gallery?
I'm sorry, I just couldn't help but cringe when you called yourself a professional animator. It made you come off as someone just begging for attention. And how you just used it as a defense like, "Oh it doesn't matter what you say because I'm a professional!" pfft lol I guess being a "professional" means nothing these days

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BumFondler In reply to uPikachu [2012-05-25 13:25:56 +0000 UTC]

so now it goes to me begging for attention? What exactly are you trying to prove again. If your so worried about this being an act for attention. Why are you giving me it? The comment was for the artist, not you.

Also, do you want me to prove my ability? I'd love to have an animation face-off with you. If you think I'm just bluffing so bad, and exaggerating myself. Then you should have no problem destroying me. rite? I'll even let you pick the subject. If you come back saying something like "I don't want to waste my time with this" you admit defeat. So accept and get schooled, or decline and pussy out. Have it your way. Like at burger king!

uPikachu In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-25 20:21:13 +0000 UTC]

Just because you can throw something together in flash and call it an animation doesn't make you a professional >_> Yes you are begging for attention even more now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BumFondler In reply to uPikachu [2012-05-25 20:24:09 +0000 UTC]

lol i don't throw things together, I make actual animated shorts. Ranging from 1-15 minutes in length. You are severely underestimating me, and I'll take that as a decline so you have lost. Thanks for the easy victory!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

uPikachu In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-26 04:40:09 +0000 UTC]

Why are you trying so hard to prove you're better than everyone? Rather than having to say it to everyone you comment to, just put some decent art in your gallery. I'm sorry but I've already beat you at that. Why should I give you a free commission lmao.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BumFondler In reply to uPikachu [2012-05-26 13:27:24 +0000 UTC]

everyone? You dissed my work. I'm only talking to you. I will not put "some decent" work in my gallery. I don't use deviantart to show off because I think the community is the worst, and you only further strengthen my opinion about this site. But if I have to add a little effort after I've been dissed. I love inconsistently submitting an occasional effort-filled piece. Taking people by surprise is way more fun than getting praised for consistent quality. That to me is more fun. I do what I do on this site because, I enjoy making bad art. Its all about enjoyment, nothing else.

You have not beaten me, if that helps you sleep at night. Think what you want, but you talking about your superiority because you made a couple of pokemon icons. Thats seriously laughable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

uPikachu In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-27 04:30:40 +0000 UTC]

I know I'm not the first one you've done this to. I saw that pokemon flash animation trying to prove someone else wrong that you're so "professional". talk about laughable pokemon art.
All I'm saying is, if you think someone drew something that you could draw yourself in 1 minute, then why don't you upload something better. Complaining about it is not going to make you any better of an artist.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BumFondler In reply to uPikachu [2012-05-27 14:44:03 +0000 UTC]

the fact is its animated wrong and now tons of people are doing this, because of her. That's my problem. The scrunching of the eyes is very lazy, and they act like its so hard and time consuming. That's why I stated I could do it in a minute. Even if I did make one of my own, it does not change the fact people use this. Also I have to hope mine gets noticed my enough to make a difference. You people will always take the lazy way, even if it looks terrible. Cause, nobody blinks like this.

Also behavior does not change my level of skill, thank you very much! Besides, I literally made that loop in 10 minutes, including looping the audio/animation. Also that guy I was showing up, had gone on my submissions out of the blue and said I sucked at animation. It wasn't even on a animated submission.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

uPikachu In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-27 19:26:45 +0000 UTC]

LOL what! You just admitted that you upload bad art on purpose! How ironic that you care so much about noobs who can't animate.
Wow an eye blink is so hard to animate in the first place. All the poor noobs who didn't know how to animate at all can now do it from this tutorial. I feel so bad.
I hope you realize the eye blink is just a few pixels downwards. It looks exactly the same when I animate my pixel art compared to staticwinds, and I do it differently. So how is it animated wrong? Why don't you show me a nicely animated pixel animation. Oh thats right, the final result of this tutorial IS nicely animated. You're just proving that noobs will be noobs. How can the artist control that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BumFondler In reply to uPikachu [2012-05-27 22:03:22 +0000 UTC]

dude, honestly. I don't get what your even talking about here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

uPikachu In reply to BumFondler [2012-05-28 07:33:46 +0000 UTC]

Your reasons why the animation looked bad were:
1. you're a professional and could do it faster
2. when noobs use the tutorial it looks bad

and my point was
1. it's a beginners tutorial, and it doesn't take a long time to make a simple eye blink in the first place.
2. noobs are noobs for a reason. that doesn't change what staticwind's artwork looks like. and people who took the time to use this tutorial actually improved.

Now please, before you criticize someone, actually give a reason why it's cheap and lazy other than raising yourself on a higher standard than the artist.

But what does your first comment matter anymore when you said you love to upload bad looking art on purpose?
