Description
Background Music for the mood, seriously, listen to it: [link]This OST is officially my working BGM for this comic series.
Prothean Reaper War series
- Act0: The Birth of a Trollthean 1 ([link] )
- Act1: Rage Against the Machines 1([link] ) - 2([link] ) - 3([link] ) - 4([link] ) - 5([link] ) - 6-1 ([link] ) - 6-2 ([link] ) - 7-1 ([link] )
Headcanon:
0. Vahana's mom died giving birth to her, so she saw Teishen as a mother-figure. She still calls Teishen "cousin", though, because it's the title they should refer to each other.
1. The greatest Prothean biotics have their sense ability and biotic power so advanced that it becomes somewhat resembles to para-psychic abilities. Clairvoyance and Foreseeing are some of the most remarkable biotic abilities during the Prothean Cycle.
2. Knightmaster Ojo was an Archknight, he was Vahana's master when she was an apprentice. And had taught Vahana how to utilize her powerful sense abilities.
3. Both Knightmaster Ojo and Emperor Graileann possessed the ability of Forseeing, which Vahana didn't.
4. Vahana's has 3 remarkable biotic abilities, 2 of which are shown in this comic strip:
"Clairvoyance", the ability to sense desired activities within a certain area, in this case, Vahana was using it to track down the location of the Reapers that were coming to Vessala;
"Aegis Sanctum", this is Vahana's signature ability as the Exemplar of Protection. It's basically a biotic force field powerful enough to block out all sorts of invasive attack (including particle/reaper beam attack), and deflect a certain frequency of sounds (particularly used against the Reaper's indoctrinative growl).
Vahana had to focus on maintaining the force field when she was using her Aegis Sanctum ability and couldn't attack, this is where she'd rely on Javik to assist her.
Now I kinda see why Javik said the Asari's Biotic ability was too primitive.

I'm thrilled to hear that.
Trying to keep myself spoiler-free here...
The new strip can be up by Friday, trying hard to squeeze time to draw it.

I've never read a Prothean comic before so it has all the nuances of novelty.
I just spotted it!
Hey, by the way, would you mind giving me the link to those stubs again? I'm at my apartment now and of course the link is on my other computer at the family place, argh. (I forgot the titles and I was looking through your gallery but couldn't find them, sorry) It's just typical when I finally sit down to read them, blah.

I'm terribly sorry with my bad memory... but what kind of things have I sent you?
If it's the background stories, all of the long wordy stuffs are over here : [link]

Ha ha, that would certainly be interesting, no doubt. I was taking my morning shower this morning when I suddenly heard Javik's voice talking about salarian primitives. 'They used to eat flies'. And I just started howling with laughter, lol.
Ah, well, I fled my apartment again so I came full circle and am now back on the linked PC again, ha ha. Too much noise and too hot over there, plus the cats really wanted back here to enjoy sleeping on the grass. I'll read the stubs tomorrow morning, thanks again! Sorry I couldn't be more precise, I had totally no idea of what the titles were so I couldn't tell you what I was looking for. :/

My headcanon tells me that Javik's parents were a school teacher and a librarian. So he was filled with knowledge of "primitives" before his colony was taken down by the Reapers. :3
It's alright, "stubs" is rather a fitting term for those textual stuffs... compared to all these pics I've got in my folders.
Having cats sleeping on the grass sounds like a very relaxing image that fits nicely to the summer season.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to StellarStateLogic [2012-05-24 21:39:08 +0000 UTC]
That's actually a really nice idea. I like it! I wouldn't have minded being a librarian myself, I always loved to just stroll around all the books, all the knowledge gathered in one place like that. I'm not sure Javik's species had books as such, perhaps they had evolved past such primitive means, but I'm sure they'd have some kind of data archive to draw on.
Stubs was the only word that came to mind, heh. Now I see it's the 'Codex Dump for a Post-Synethesis Galaxy.'
Aw, it is, belive me. My mother's garden overlooks the lake as well, there's just two other gardens between it and the lake, so the cats will just sit there and watch life and then fall asleep in the grass. I sometimes lie down with them too. These three are my so far one and only litter, I bred them purely for my own benefit six years ago and I couldn't have asked for a better trio. They're so amazing ...

I'm pretty much a book person as well, I've been living with books since a young age because my parents were always busy at work.
Prothean "books" may just be something like their spheres or info-drones or even those little metal pieces they've got. Books can be in many forms, there were bamboo scrolls in ancient China, and all the papyrus scriptures... I use the word 'book' here to refer to any device that carries knowledge or academic information, so it's like a general term.
Aww, the more you're describing it, the more I'm tempted to get out of my house and find some wilderness to stay in and just chill out. And cats, I'd really want to have one in my house when I get my own living space.

That's great. I'm sure you draw your imagination from all those read books as well.
Yes indeed. I wonder if their more hi-tech solutions are as emotional though as the feel of a paper book or a scroll in your hands? Computerized fiction can never really be the same thing as printed writings, don't you think so?
Aww, well I hope you do find the time and opportunity to do so!
If you're thinking that, you should get two cats. Two siblings. Seeing my own litter being born and grow has shown me how much cats can mean to one another, just like humans. I've had cats for over thirty years, but the first twelve we had a single cat and he was miserable and lonely until we got him a friend. We've never had single cats ever since. It's so fantastic watching two cats (or three in my case) sleeping together in a pile, washing each other or playing together. I hope you get to experience that sometime. It's magic.

The publish/book/paper culture for protheans would be an interesting thing to explore, they'd probably have a very advanced version of our kildles... and with the sense ability like theirs, I actually don't think they need "literal" records. They probably have developed the concept of information recording around the sense ability itself. In the end, they can simply exchange information with a beacon or an echo shard.
I'd start to wonder if they have more "imaginary" things, like fictions or mythologies, and if they will consider it a appreciable value.
So in my story, that's how Javik learned many things when he was a kid. He got so used to touching things that it became his way of "self introduction".
My professor also advised similar things. She owns 2 cats herself and they are also siblings. She said she saw the litter and couldn't imagine how they could live without each other, so she adopted them both.
I should definitely get a cat (or two if my finances can live up with it), when I move to some place cooler.

You're right, that is an interesting point of view. And judging by the way the beacons seemed to work, with mental imagery rather than written warnings, maybe their libraries would indeed consist of something similar?
Interesting. If anything, I'd have guessed such nonsens would be below them somehow. Something 'primitives' might endulge in.
I see. It would leave him almost crippled when waking up again in the present, don't you think?
That's exactly it. I've never really thought about how traumatic it must be for a little kitten to be separated from its mother and siblings, since we've always had at least one other cat at home for it to bond with. But I don't think I'll ever take just one kitten again, if anything I'll probably take two since I've seen two wonderful examples of how much they mean to each other for the rest of their lives ...
Yaaaay. Yes, heat can be quite a nuisance for them. Sometimes when it grows extremely hot here, I give my cats a bath. I imagine the wet fur will help cool them down and it seems to work. Usually I use the garden hose and connect it to the kitchen tap so I can use lukewarm water and they don't really mind taking a shower out on the lawn, lol. It's a different story if I'd try it in the bathroom.

StellarStateLogic In reply to FoolsGil [2012-05-14 13:49:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I was laying out the stories.
My headcanons told me that the Protheans started being on the upper-hand, and during the 400-600 years, the tide turned gradually towards the Reapers, especially after the Separatists started the Prothean Civil War atop of the Reaper War. So bacially the left part of the galaxy was going on war against the right part. And the Separatists joined Reaper forces because they believed they could control them, and so they gained access to the Mass Relay, which the Flaruniss Fleet didn't really have.
Imagine a ME3 with Udina successfully coup the Citadel and handed it over to the Illusive Man. It'd be like what the Protheans had to face around the 300th year during the Reaper war. Plus they've lost the Crucible.
In these kind of event, winning the war just seemed too impossible.
Protheans got military and power, but somehow the luck just wasn't on their side.

Me:...truly Javik's Trolling Sensei is unmatched in all the universe...
Although DAMMIT, he could've at least picked up some more of that epic biotic shielding! Hah, let's see Harbinger punch through THAT!
And I LIIIIIIKE that Aegis Sanctum idea! It makes sense, right down to the part where it limits her actual movement capabilities.

Vahana being the Empress is just like the most unlikely thing in the whole universe. She got 3 brothers and 2 sisters before her, not to mention she was stripped from the line of succession since an early age. No wonder Teishen was all freaked out. XD
Javik's biotic power wasn't able to comprehend such ability, his best shot of the similar ability would be like the stuff he did to blast the collectors. Being able to rend up the special containment cell of the Penumbra Apex showed that his specialty is in doing damage, rather than defending.

Right. Considering I don't HAVE the From Ashes DLC...yeah, I'm a little out of the loop with regards to Javik and his capabilities.
Oh nuts, you're right. I forgot the whole power struggle debacle. They put her in the Knights after that, so that's how she was removed from the equation...
Then the Reapers whacked the lot of them and she was the only surviving heir.

StellarStateLogic In reply to TheDarkbreaker [2012-05-12 20:08:18 +0000 UTC]
You really should get that DLC... not that I'm encouraging you to pay EA/Bioware after seeing that blasphemous ending... but Javik is just a character worth looking deep into. And his particle rifle and Dark Channel ability is a bliss in some messy dog-fights.
She's technically not the only surviving heir, but since she was the successor of the Imperial Echo Shard, she became the rightful heir after her eldest brother who was dead when the Reapers took over the Citadel.
I'm pretty sure her father gave it to her on purpose, hmm.

I've been hearing good stuff about the DLC...but also it's just my nature as a collector to HAVE EVERYTHING! So yeah, I need to get ahold of that DLC somehow...
Besides, ALL of his moves would be unique!
If she's anything to go by, I'm pretty sure Vahana's old man was no slouch himself with regards to planning.

It's kinda funny to see the particle beam flying everywhere on the screen and occasion green biotic stuff exploding.
It's very hard to be an Emperor, I can't even compensate with such mentality... Even though he liked his little girl the most, he's got hell lot of work to do just to keep the realm running. At least Knightmaster Ojo was really like a father-figure to Vahana. Archknights only train one apprentice per time.
I should get Ojo's design done and have this little Vahana being at his side, it'd be super cute.

OH MY GOD
CHIBI VAHANA
...
*dead from cuteness overload*
*coughs up blood and gets back up unsteadily*
H..heh, it'll take more than that to kill me...
Most kings have it hard enough, but Emperors tend to have a worse job, since most ruling systems with emperors tend to leave the emperor with the vast majority of the responsibility. At least kings can delegate it out. Emperors tend to be EXPECTED to handle everything at once.
...probably why most of the best ones burn themselves out and die early, or go mad themselves and become tyrannic despots. At least, that's the way I see it.

StellarStateLogic In reply to TheDarkbreaker [2012-05-17 03:32:06 +0000 UTC]
What chibi? Where's the chibi in this strip?
I agree with the emperors tend to have a harder time than other types of regency, people would deify them, seeing them as the voice of verdicts, looking up to them as a perfect being... and especially when they never chose to be born this way. None of us chose our birth and to which family, what's good about Vahana was that she tried to live up to people's expectations.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TheDarkbreaker In reply to StellarStateLogic [2012-05-17 03:41:13 +0000 UTC]
*facepalm* No, no, that reaction was to the idea of you drawing a little Vahana standing next to her father. You know, when you suggested drawing Ojo.
That's also the bad thing about Vahana. You can never live up to people's expectations.
Only despair and pain awaits you at the end of that role. You may become a great leader because of it, you may lead your people to heights greater than anything before, but...the dream will always destroy the dreamer.
You live, for the sake of yourself, and for the sake of your people. You fight on, judging yourself not by the standards others set for you, but for the standards you set for yourself.
Then, at the end of it all, when that final hill of ruin awaits you, alone on the last battlefield, you can face it with a smile, and with no regrets in your heart.
For Vahana to chose the first option rather than that second one, she has my respect. But..it is still painful to see. To watch someone sacrifice their own happiness for the sake of others, to sacrifice so much to become that ideal...
Becoming that ideal empress will lead to greatness, but at the end of it all...only despair and ruin awaits, surrounded by mountains of Reaper corpses.

StellarStateLogic In reply to TheDarkbreaker [2012-05-17 03:54:46 +0000 UTC]
Just to clarify, Ojo was Vahana's knightmaster, not her father (though he sometimes played the role of being one when she was younger)
Wow you're getting so deep. But the Prothean Reaper War is neverthless a story which we knew how it had ended. I'm just rubbing salt into the wound by introducing more human(prothean)-elements into the scene... Like in every war, there are always some souls worth remember, they don't necessarily have to be heroes or leaders, it's just my OC happened to be a prothean born with great burden.
