Description
this is a pen and ink drwing that I decided to add color to using artist markers. It isn't, I feel, in its finished/finished version. I had it reproduced on canvas and went over area again to clean up some of the lines. I shouldn't have used the red in the beak--but more of a yellow orange--o well. As almost everything I draw it can be viewed rotated right and left--upside down for different characatures.Related content

Tribal in the city. That's the first phrase that came into my mind when I saw this piece. It's like an eagle totem came to life & decided to fly into the city. Very fascinating work with interesting lines, patterns & forms & I say there's nothing wrong with the colors at all. Great work!

why thank you. Many people have told me about the tribal aspect of Egle Shoe---and---it was--I believe---the first piece I posted when I joined DA about 2 yrs ago.
It was nice to see it was viewed and faved---it's been awhile since it's even been seen since ---I believe---is on page 4 of my gallery. Thank you--much appreciated

I'm glad you like it. That was the first piece of art I put on here beginning of Oct. I believe this is one of the favs of da members. I really like it too--thx again for the generous compliment & fav.
Remember to rotate it. Most of my pieces can be viewed between 2 and 4 positions--it's sort of my signature. Try it. I know Eagle Shoe can definetly be hung on a wall 2 ways--maybe 3--I forget now.
Oh--of course you like it--look at your ID Onlyowls lol--now you have to add Eagles haha . Most of my art is filled with very strange birds lol

i love the bottom right where the grain looking things are. i love how grain looks and waves.
there is a kind of bird that lives around here called a northern harrier. i don't think it's an owl, or an eagle. but it is a raptor.
i make birds alot too
do you turn it as you do it?

yes. I usually start thinking about the rotations--at least one--upside down pretty early on. The last post--Pending and Pending2--I had to constantly think what an adition would do to the upside down version. Now that I think about it--most of the time--after seeing it reversed--I still work on it in it's normal position very aware of the other way. Since the normal view is the main picture on all of mine--I still work--for the most part in the normal position.
There are many times I sit with a cup of coffee and view all ways--all rotations--but it's impossible to get everything I want on all rotations.
Tonight I made the decision to add something to the main view--I knew by doing this I would lose about 4 great images on right view and upside down--I still went ahead with the change on main view. In a way, I do give myself extra work with all this--I'm just so used to working this way. Not all of my art is like that either. When I post from now on I will add what is what on rotations instead of writing extra notes all over the place lol.

you made me think of working like that, kind of.
thank you

hmmm--rarely--but it has happened. You know why? I labor over the decision--look--think--look--think. By the time I'm ready to cover something I'm pretty sure it's going to work.
The bigger problem for me is taking too much off, or covering too large an area that was not intended. This can ruin a pen and ink rendering.
I really regret having torn one up months ago. It was done!!! I looked closely. I didn't like just one tiny spot---well!! I had to mess with it--and to me it was ruined--the entire 9X12 abstract that was--in my opinion--one of my best. What possesed me to throw it in the garbage ripped up???
Now I realize I could've fixed it---easily too. I almost never rip anything up. I could've thrown it on the side and started another. I bet a week later I would've fixed it and posted it here. Won't make that mistake again.
Working with paint is diferent--screw up--paint over it--not the same with pen and ink
After all that said--I rarely do it with pen and ink--paint? Yes--if you really don't like it--you can always repaint the area. A pain for sure, but at least you can fix it.
Why don't I just throw them in a paint program and learn that---would save me much grief--but it might actually take longer to do---have no idea.

too bad you did something so impulsive. i used to use acrylics,
still use charcoal and pencils. but, i love pixels, i may never go back
is that a fish with lips?
feathers or leaves?

Stepbeyond In reply to onlyowls [2006-01-10 19:58:46 +0000 UTC]
the lips are on a character in the black triangle--you can make him anything. To me he is a character--like a ghost or fish looking person. The other lips (red--right upper corner) are on a human face--look at outline in black-- and the small circle is the eye--you'll see it right a way.
U mean as in painter---etc? pixels--other? So you think I should color one of mine using painter? How long would you say it would take (providing you have the talent) to really be good with a program like that?

define "really be good"
i saw the face right away, no matter the angle.
should you try software?
does it seem fun at all?
something you'd enjoy? i love photoshop and illustrator and a few other programs. but sometimes all i use is a pencil and paper.
when do you choose what colors you use?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Stepbeyond In reply to onlyowls [2006-01-12 03:21:49 +0000 UTC]
ok--really good to me means you are experienced and pretty much in command of a program. Not on a pro level though
I will try some software--sure. Pen and ink will always be done with pen and ink : )
Painter, etc--seems like fun. Would it give me the same amount of enjoyment as actual painting? I don't know.
I use Photoshop for correcting color now and I put in backgrounds 2 times. The frustrating part? Too many choices---just too many choices.
I find I choose the colors as I go. For me it works because everythings there--I can picture it better. But, I've done most art in black and white--so there was no issue in choosing colors.

when i started learning photoshop, i instantly fell in love with it, but that's just me
your first love is probably your best hand.
i've found with large programs like photoshop, i bought a really good book. i got completely absorbed in brushes halfway through the book.
tell me about the name, please?
the colors you chose are wonderful.

The eagle---right flip the drawing--see it easy---and on the left bottom is a shoe--the blue squares on top of the shoe and up is the pants leg. I signed my name in the heel of the shoe--got it?

What brand of markers do you prefer using? I was actually quite satisfied with the color of the beak. *grinning You're being to hard on yourself. No you don't need to study color theory more etc. Your work is as beautiful as it is.

I like the prismcolor artist markers. The black is flat--I believe all their markers are. I do like other markers for gloss deeper blacks. I've used La Plume--Sharpie--cloth markers--etc. What I use the most, though, are Pilot pens 0.5 and 0.7. Then again sometimes another type roller is better for other situations.

Another incredible piece of work. There's something really interesting going on here. I can see the right hand two thirds of the piece have a really tribal element and then the blue third on the left reminds me of modernity and sky scrapers. What an enjoyable piece to look at

Yes--the tribal element. Eagle Shoe seemed to be more to look at then expected. Among my insane works Egle Shoe was a simpler designed piece but much more then you would think. Many people like that one---again--thanks Pixie

You're braver than I to attempt using colour. I know you're the expert here, but to me the colours look fine. But maybe I'm not so great with colours!
I find with this one I don't get as many differnet things when flipping it around. But it's still great, because the main part that the eye focusses on seems to morph and change while you're looking at it!
I think this is spectacularly well pulled off.

Yes, your eye does change and the illusions start showing themselves. I have made so many comments about characters that I neglected a big one. The illusions that your mind can pull out of these. Six feet away and slightly dimmer light does all kinds of cool things. Sometimes a clear image comes out after months of looking at it---so much fun---keep up with urs.

An orange red hue would have been better to identify it as a beak. You need to study the theroy of colors more if you are going to work with more often they have certain rules that add to effects and become more than just a visiual titalator. That is why I tend to stick to to black and white, I havee never been big on following rules. Never could get coloring things right but colors can add a speical impact to abstracts espically when set forms are twisted away.
