To draw with soft lead is the best. But doesn't it make it difficult to ink? Do you have to lighten the lines with kneaded eraser before inking - otherwise, how can you see the ink lines well enough to judge line weights?
Thanks. Great demo.

I personally pencil with hb. Then ink normally

Thank you. That's good to know. I continue to use different leads and pencil types - soft, hard, mechanical pencils, clutch pencils, non-photo blue - but haven't found a decent way to make really clean pencils. I've gone back to the traditional ink drawing method of lightening the pencils with gum eraser. It works, but it is time consuming. I also do my constructions in blue to cut down on the mess.
After watching almost all of your videos (I'm still going through them right now) I get the feeling that the next step for me is to start keeping the construction in my head instead of always putting it on paper: i.e. visualize the skeleton but only draw the contour of the muscle around it. This seems to be one of the abilities that comes after constant practice sketching.

So im not suppose to just look at the pic and see theres shadow there and draw it or wut? i don't really understand wut you mean, can you explain it a little more?
Do you have to get an art teacher to draw well? i mean i will when i get into high school i mean just for like classes outside school.
I have a little problem, i can't draw with pens, i always get this unsmooth scratching kinda line and stuff, i always use pencils. i do it pretty quick, im not dragging the pen or anything. I usually outline with black prismacolor pencil or just a soft leaded pencil, can you help??
Sorry for all these questions :S

It's really simple, just sketch, grab a pencil and sketch and try to see how lineart works for you

Wonderful work as always, although it threw me off when the first part cut off in the middle of a sentence, but I understand you have time restrictions with DA video.
I have a website to share with all the newbs: [link]
It's full of all sorts of stock photos, and you can do very detailed searches as well. It's helped me a lot.

Insane stuff. And I certainly agree, when dealing with pencil you can never sketch enough, and its sketching that really brings out a lot of the cooler ideas and sometimes even the best stuff. Plus its also a fantastic way to kill freezes on creativity.
Wonderful video sir, I do truly enjoy these and hope you continue bringing them to the masses. Keep rocking buddy!

Love the tutorial vid. You're right on so many levels. People need to no the fundamentals of drawing like you mentioned about sketching a lot, because not long ago, I was just going straight in just drawing with no foundation to build on, so now I've have been getting a lot better, thanks to my determination learning through guys like you. Again thanks for the vid

This is great man, your right about sketching I sketch every day every chance I get because If I don't I'll never get that day back it's gone I'm not a time traveling mutant (Wouldn't that be awesome though?) I even made my own little motto so I never give up
Every great piece of art starts with many shitty sketches.
HaHa it's true too I usually have to draw something five times before I'm happy with it.

I think i'll need to get me one of those soft lead mechanical pencils... or at least a soft lead wood pencil... i tried the woodless soft lead and it pretty much equates to taking forever to sharpen, also i've discovered that my sketch paper is too rough for it, so i'm probably going to get smoother paper and the machanical soft led. That should help get my lines much smoother

Hardness or softness of your lead depends on the weather a lot! Humid weather conditions demand softer lead, harder ones [ that I prefer ] are great in dry conditions.
Try various papers, combinations of lead... save the trees, use 2mm leads in klutch pencils/lead holers and sharpen them with the barrell shaped rotating lead pointer. Tons of them in art stores... or a humble sandpaper on a plastic wee board does the trick.
Mechanical micro-lead click-pencils, like the one used by Steven are cheap, loads of various lead all over the place. Go for 0.7 or 0.9 -- I think they're better than most common 0.5 gauge. Try HB, B and H, see which suits you well. I'm using 2H, HB and B, depending on paper, weather, mood... it's great to experiment.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll be sure to look into them.
Funny thing though, you're replying to something that was posted over a year ago. Nowadays I just use my trusty Intuos4 and my work is mostly digital. i tend to only use pencils and paper for sketching and mindstorming.
However, I usually use medium hardness 5.0 Mechanical pencil. I probably should use softer and thicker led, especially since I live in a rather himid climate. (for most of the year anyway)
Thanks for the tip.

Not at all, my pleasure!
Mea culpa, Noble Squire... I've discovered San, Toon Up and the Launge cca. 2 nights ago, didn't know about the stuff before.
Great Adam Hughes once said that in the humid weather [ he lives in Atlanta ] paper 'thinks' that 4B ultra-soft pencil is 2B. I didn't notice such a drastic change or anything, but people in the know tell stories about dry=hard lead, humid weather=softer etc. even old skool comics masters knew it and had ready harder and softer leads, depending on the season and weather conditions.
So.. you're Wacom-ized finally..? Me too but I can't abandon pencil, ink and brush plus nibs and pens...
Keep it up, face front and all the best. L8er,
[ ~b~ ]
